So have been looking at purchasing a kick sled to take my husky winter camping, shes still a pup, so I got a few years to wait, I mostly want to do my usually hiking, snowcaving, snowboarding etc, but I figure I could use the kick sled to atleast haul some gear, and get around quicker, That and it would be a great experience for me and my dog. Was wondering if anyone had taken a single dog out , or used a kick sled for an extended period of time (3-5 days) What was ur experience, is it worth the investment. Did you have fun, advice on what gear to get, or wear to get cheap gear. I am new to this and am not planning on taking my dog on the Iditorod …

I am teaching this to my youngster at the moment (as the basis for the seekback exercise in obedience, but anyone can train it just for a bit of fun) and we are having a great time with it so I thought I'd see if anyone else wanted to train it too. The goal is to teach your dog to find an item that's hidden in the room. This eventually becomes a scent work game that teaches your dog to use its nose. Start with a simple object, I am using a small piece of rolled leather but it can be anything - your car keys, a toy, etc. You don't want to use anything too big. Have your dog in the room with you, with the object, Have some treats handy and …

Zihna had her second obedience training session today which included leash training. Of course she was getting super excited when she saw the leash. So my trainer told me a good way to have them calm down and not go nuts when they see the leash. She said I should grab the leash several times throughout the day and just walk around with it. Maybe hang it over my shoulder or just move it from one place to another. After a while they will get the hint that grabbing the leash will not always mean going for a walk, but it 'may' mean go for a walk. So they will still pay attention to you when you grab it....but not run and jump and whatever they do when they see you grab the le…

I have a medium manmat Xback, tried it on my boy and it fits but seems to be a little tight around the kneck area, so my question is how fitted is too fitted? Obviously it cant be too loose or it will wiggle around but I also dont want it so tight that it cuts off anything vital!?? So what do you think? Should I try to sell and order a large? Ooooor because I'm going to be scootering with him and the gang line is going to be fastened at the handel base maybe a H back might be better? He does have one that fit lovley but its not padded? Help!! Im stuck and I really want to start scootering with h…

A few tips on getting your dog used to a head-collar. FIRST OFF Show the dog the head collar. Touch the dog’s neck and show the dog the head collar. Touch the back of the dog’s head with the head collar Touch the dog’s nose with the head collar. Attach the head collar around your dog’s neck, but like a regular collar – just let the nose loop hang down. Take it off after 1 second. Repeat the above, taking it off after 2 seconds. Feed the dog a treat through the head collar (from now on, the treats you give will all be through the nose loop of the head collar. Put a bit more of the nose loop over the dog’s muzzl…

Is anybody going to this? Its on 22nd October in the Forest of Dean and is a team event, you need two people with two teams, and your times are combined. Unfortunately some friends from Ireland that were going to travel over to it can't make it now, so if anyone is going and doesn't have a partner, Diesel, Tala and I would love to team up with someone in the novice race:D

Eventually I plan to train my dog to pull a small sled, (longboard in the summer) my older brother (german shepard) and his friend (malamute/husky) do this all the time, it is alot of fun, but there is no commands or training involved we just hook em up, and enjoy the ride. I plan on having Suka pull my little girl around the park on a tiny sled (with me trotting on the back) I was hoping someone would have some good advice on how to train them to start, stop, faster slower, etc. also anyone know a good site for a cheap kicksled? Thanks

Just found the forum, looks to be the Goods! Im the owner of a Siberian Husky, He's about 1.5 year old atm He's a very well behaved dog, Does the whole Sit, Shake and drop thing. Has lots of energy! and plays with other dogs outside 'his' territory very well. But once i let him off his lead in a public place, He just kinda runs off and wont Come on my command (or even ecknowledge im there). The only way ive basically found to get him back is to jump in the car, and drive up beside him. Any tips/advice/ links? Ive tried for a while to just reward him with treats, He isnt so bad in the backyard, I just think the excitement of being free…

Well I 've decided to stop tempting fate and preserve what small amount of brain matter I have left by wearing a cumbersome, claustrophobic, and hot, piece of protective head gear this year. Can you tell me what you wear and why you like (or chose) it? I scooter, sled, and rig, (as I recall....)

Couldn't think of a topic tile that makes sense We have a problem with an avocado tree growing in our neighbours back yard. It is huge with branches overhanging in our backyard. Every time I let the huskies out, I first check the area, but while they are outside, some do drop down and of course, they pick it up. Micah will 9/10 times sit when I tell her and reluctantly allows me to remove the avo, but Ozzy is another story. He runs away when I approach and the only way to get him to release it is by bribing him with a chicken neck or something similar. He drives me crazy. We have stripped the tree as far as we can, but there is still plenty on the top and every tim…

I know this has been talked about before, but nothing is quite like what's happening here, so maybe somebody with experience won't mind giving me advice, even though it may be repetitive here. I just don't know which strands to follow. I have 2 rescue huskies. Andy has been with us about 7 weeks, and Jackson, 1 week. When they first met, they played for an hour, rough and tumble, but not aggressive. We thought great match, and brought Jackson home the next day. The rode home together in the car, and continue to ride together in the back seat just fine. Here's the problem...one day Jackson, who just isn't real aware of what's going on around him stuck his…

Hey guys So as a lot of you know, Grey is with us because he is a noisy bugger and Mary and Tony had complaints, crying etc when left alone is a common sign of seperation anxiety, as is shadowing peoplein the house, which Grey has been doing, tho we have been blocking his access to us when we leave the room, so he gets used to not being able to follow us Tonight all 3 of us are going shopping, normally takes at least an hour, probably about 2. Grey has not been left since he got here, someone has always been here, tho Gerry normally sits upstairs on his computer, so he is used to there not being someone in the room with him. I'm about t…

Fox hasn't given me problems on walks before...but since the incident with that stuuupid woman and her large dog attacking him he's been off the map. It's like he's taken all of his walk ettiquite for the last several months...decided that it doesn't work based upon the one incident and has said...'forget this, I quit.' As of this moment we're not taking walks to the parks or the cornfield or anywhere he enjoys anymore. I thought at first I was being reactionary...and someone please tell me if I am being that way and how to fix it. He's been pulling SO hard that I'm afraid he's going to hurt himself...he's made himself vomit on walks tw…

In my humble opinion, there is much unsupported and often emotional propaganda condemning shock collars put about by PETA, HSUS (and other "nutters"). Conversely, platitudes by proponents of shock collars and the industry ("it doesn't hurt the dog") are at once subjective, incredulous and disingenuous. For this reason, the paper summarized below is a rather rare published, rigorously scientific study of the effects of shock collar training. Personally, I find shock collar training to be repugnant and unacceptable in a civilized society. I think the paper adequately illustrates this. But that is simply my opinion - and I make no attempt to hide it. H…

Im currently working on my phycology course and im getting a real head ake.... The question says Discuss the mental and physical development of the puppy from birth to twelve weeks, identifying the three critical periods and also the effects of the interactions which take place between litter mates and the dam. Include your views on at least three situations to which the breeder should expose the puppies prior to sale, and say why you consider this to be important. I can answer this fine, well all except the bit about 3 critical periods! I make it 4 critical : neonatal, transitional, socilisation to dogs, socailisation to humans..... …

Hey guys, I'm having a hard time getting spirit to stop barking/lunging at other dogs when we're on our walks. I tired getting her to sit down. When she starts barking and/or lunging again i say "no" and get her to "sit"....she'll only do it for 30sec and she goes at it again....the other owners are afraid to come near us =S She only does this to some dogs and it's in our neighbourhood....i have no idea why. I've brought her to off leash dog parks and she doesn't seem to bark or be aggressive with other dogs there. I've also took her to this event called "Woofstock" where all dogs gather in one area, and she doesn't do it either. I dont want to her to be …

I asked about this stuff before, but it's gotten a little worse. Kissu still does the hind leg slam to my moms dogs. The female especially. She's been acting more dominant than my moms other dog. He just runs and hides. Angel puts up with him, kinda. He keeps putting his butt in her face, and she doesn't like it, so she gives him warning barks and lunges at him. He thinks it's a game and puts his bum in the air and nips at her paws ( her paws are sensitive cause of allergies, so she REALLY doesn't like that). And he's relentless about it. No matter how many warning barks she gives, he doesn't listen. I know he's just a puppy and probably doesn't get it. But Angel is too w…

So I decided to keep my fur babies off of the couch. Trust me its probably harder for me than it is for them because I LOVE TO SNUGGLE WITH THEM on the couch. However, Zihna decided that she does not want Whisper on the couch and as soon as he would get on she would irritate him till he get off and then she would run to the other couch and jump on it and stand there like: NOPE you not getting on this one either. So to prevent any problems I decided to keep them both off and get each a nice chill out spot in the living room. Whisper is still at Doggy Camp and they will teach him there to stay off the couch and I am working on Zihna here. The problem is that I th…

Hi guys, I'm worried about Dakota, she's been really sad the last week or so.She's happy after her walk, she sits on by the front door with that happy husky look on her face and then takes a nap. But she'll sleep then for the rest of the day, she's only 15months, I've never thought a husky would sleep so much? Dave's been away (for work) about 3 weeks now, think she might be missing him, but she's going to have to get used to it so I'm not sure what to do. We did talk abut getting another husky as a companion but we want to wait till after Xmas as we might be going home for 3 weeks, don't think it'd be fair to leave a new husky for that amount of time. We've tried to get …

Hi all -- found this forum and it has really helped me learn a lot -- by just reading the posts. I now have a need to ask for help and what better place? I have a wonderful 5 1/2 month old husky, that I love dearly. He is so precious and has always been well behaved, certainly not a dominant and not a submissive puppy -- pretty much in the middle and maybe even more on the submissive quite side. He listens well -- LOVES people, is great with small childern and just perfect. Until about 3 weeks ago -- now when we approach other dogs (on leash) he stops in his track and stands alert -- and then starts to grumble -- almost growl! I calm him down, say soflty -…

I brought a rescue home recently, she's a bit over a year but no one knows for sure. she was neglected and starved and as far as they know she wasn't beaten or hit - she certainly doesn't seem like it. where i have found a bit of aggression is if i'm petting her or she's lying down by me and skyy comes over hanna (the newbie) will bare her teeth a little. she doesn't seem to do it any other time so far except when i'm giving her attention. i would guess she doesnt want me sharing attention while she's getting it. so far i give her a stern NO and a small swat to her muzzle to break her focus. what other tips might you suggest? would me getting up or moving her away h…
