Ok so Silas and Koda we have to train on a leash. They are use to the leash being on them so it doesn't bother them. The first few times we walked them at every stop sign we came to, we would give them a treat and that seemed to help them to not pull on the leash and to actually walk with us. They have been doing great until about a week ago. Everytime we take them to the dog park, they are walking in front of us, eager to get there. However, when we walk back they are constantly tugging on the leash, sitting down, and Koda even layed down today. They are also going crazy for all the dogs in their fences that we walk by--constantly tugging at the leash and pulling to get …

I've been doing a little research on this since Milla's coat has changed so much in the past week. I've found most of her guard hairs are banded. Some in the traditional agouti pattern (black, cream, black) but some are half and half: black near the skin and white at the tip. And, of course, there are hairs that are all white or all black. Undercoat is wolf grey. I wish I could get a good pic of her coat but she walks away as soon as I turn the camera on. Does the presence of banded hairs mean she's agouti instead of black and white?

Neo has always been really good with the whole mouthing thing.. and hasn't ever really been a mouthy pup.. BUT all of a sudden over the last few weeks he has been very mouthy when he wants attention.. Firstly he'll grab at your hands, to which we always say 'No' and then ignore him..he will then come back and this time it will be fairly hard, enough to bruise me *I bruise easy which doesn't help* . We always at first say 'No' and get up/walk away, backs turned and ignore him - which used to work up until about a week ago - where now he will follow and jump at our backs. He's fine in every other department but this mouthing and…

Title tells We were in the show ring with Gini in 10.1.2010. Judge was Tino Pehar from Croatia. There were 13 reported dogs of which 6 were males and the rest females. Competed in the same class, three other females. Gini competed in junior class with 3 other females. We were first, we run around the circle and back and forth. It went well. "1 year old, good size & proportions. Feminine head, could have little more stop. Correct topline & tailset. Correct angulation & good movement. Little bit long in loin" VG CL1

So I have two husky pups who are 9 weeks old and I need to figure out different ways to help them to not be scared of people. They are very social with other dogs, its just people. I've been trying to get them us to me and my husband as well. I've done everything from rewards to passion and love. I spend all day with them and they are still terrified. When we go to the park, we give people treats to feed them so they will go to them but as soon as they get the treat they dart away. They were raised outside and only with their littermates so they haven't had a lot of interaction with people. We have people come over on occasion to help them with their fear. However nothing…

Sit: Stand in front of your dog. Hold a treat right near your pet's nose, just out of his or her reach. Slowly move the treat over your pup's head and toward his or her tail. Say your dog's name, and give the command "Sit." Keep the treat at nose level. If the treat is held too high, the dog will jump. Say the word "good" at the exact second the dog sits. Praise abundantly and give your pet a treat for any movement that resembles the sit position. Release your pet from the sit position with the "release" or "free" command Repeat for 5 minutes. Lie Down: Have dog sit in front of you. Kneel down and hold a treat in your hand right near dog's nos…

Ok so we took the dogs to the dog park yesterday, Kira, Grey and OH's mums dogs, Yuki n Buster. Kira, Yuki n Buster were fab, played nicely, didnt bug the other dogs if they didnt want to play etc etc. Grey ended up in a fight, now he is not agressive, he is fine off the lead, tho can sometimes act up on the lead. But he is really playful, and its rough play. Obviously Sibes play quite rough anyway, every young sibe I've met has wrestled and been quite rough, and thats fine with other sibes, because they understand that its just play and they enjoy it. But he was jumping around this young (about a year old) lab, mouthing his neck and put…

Zen is 5 months and has been doing great on all training and behaviours. We go on long walks, heel is not a problem, loose leash is going well, and we take the bus so she is used to waiting. Her go to position is down - she uses it when I stand still at th store or bus stop or when my attention is elsewhere. Well, today, on a walk, she nipped at my hand when I was tapping me knee for a heel. (This was a first!). I stopped her, told her to sit, to go down and when I had her focus, "let's go" and on with our walk. I treat train (random intervals), so the heel was with treats. I did not treat the sit or down consequence. She did the same thing a f…

So we have been house training Silas and Koda and we knew it was going to be a tough thing to get through. We always reward them when they use the bathroom outside and they seem to be learning that really well. However they still constantly use the potty on the carpet. We've tried ignoring them when they use the potty in the house and then clean it up when they aren't looking. We don't have enough money for a crate at the moment due to some military issues that can't seem to get settled. So i was wondering if anyone had any advice, it would be extremely helpful.

So I've had Kissu a little over a month now (seems MUCH longer). I started off training him by going out with him on a leash and waiting for him to go. It was going ok. He's young, so accidents still happened as expected. But it got to the point where he would not go unless I went out with him. So the few times when I'm not home, he wouldn't go out side, and my mom would bring him in, and he'd go right by the door. And for simple things, like if I have to answer the door right as I'm about to get ready to take him outside, when I'm done talking to whoever it is, I grab the leash and get ready, but then find that he's already gone by the back door again. I talke…

I'm really quite perplexed. I know that "Girls Can Do Anything", but this is getting to be ridiculous. Quite seriously, Diva, our little brown 4 yr old spayed female has taken to mounting and humping other dogs. Vigorously. Particularly male huskies - like Kayko - but she's not fussy. It's starting to get rather embarrassing. Does anybody else have a female that does this? Or perhaps I should just write it off to "The Spirit of the Klondike"?

The American Veterinary Society for Animal Behavior (AVSAB) is an organization of veterinarians and folks with PhD's in animal behavior. They have one hell of a hate on for Caesar Milan, our beloved darling "Dog Whisperer". The nicest thing they accuse Caesar of is that he set dog training back ten years. Their Position Paper Dominance and Myths About Wolf Behavior and Dominance as it Relates to Dogs can be found here. It's an interesting read. I think they had Caesar in mind when they wrote it. Here are just a few extracts: AVSAB is concerned with the recent re-emergence of dominance theory and forcing dogs and other animals into submissi…

I got my old bike last weekend, and have spent the past week making sure that it is in top working order - oiled chain, tightened breaks, etc, etc. Well today I took Isis out for the first time with the bike. Because I wasn't too sure how she would run I got Luke (my son) to ride out infront of us and keep calling her name every so often just to keep her focussed on chasing after him. I used the usual commands as I would for when I used to run with them - hike on, wooah, steady, etc. We only ran for approx 10 minutes and she did great - to be honest I pedalled all of the way so she didn't pull much the first time, just run. She could have carried on going, but …

One of the first questions I came with to the forum was how to slow my Jackson down eating. He was finishing a cup of food in 10 seconds. Many had good ideas, though I did not want to wait for a delivery or spend money on a new bowl so I wanted to share my creative solution. It seems to work even better now! First, I just added blocks to his bowl. While it did slow him down, we talked about it and wondered if he couldn't push them around would it slow him down even more? The answer...yes! So, trusty super glue in one hand, blocks in another, and an old, cheap plastic food bowl...and WHALLA!!! Took Jackson longer to finish eating tonight th…

Bought a 10m training lead before camping mainly to allow the dogs to have more freedom. With so much extra lead to run on I decided to add in some recall work so I ave that extra control if/when I need it. Started wth Gizmo today, I halved the lead to a 5m lead as it was our first time out in the open training recall and Gizmo is soooo strog when he gets a run up he could easily pull me over with 10m lead! Went armed with 2 squeeky toys, the long lead and his usual walkies lead. Went over to our playing fields and chose the quietest one which was empty (perfect to start) and then put Gizmo onto the 5m lead. I started by getting his focus …
