A BRIEF GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS HARNESSES X-back or shoulder - which to choose? The racing/recreational x-back, an x-back harness is designed for the efficiency and comfort of a dog pulling a light load at anything from a walk/trot to a gallop. This may be either as an individual or working in a team. The X-back harness gets its name from the straps that form an 'X' across the back of the dog. The X-back design keeps the harness in place, controls vertical motion, but doesn't restrict the dog's gait. The "Sliding X" on top allows the harness to compensate for different dogs, and for the off-center pull of standard gangline hitches. This harness i…

So I've seen varoius things around the net but I'm trying to get to the bottom of this. I was out taking her for a walk and 2 Labs ran up to her and she tried to attack both of them she had one pinned to the ground by the throat and I was baffled as she's never done this before in the time I've had her. (Roughly about 2-3 months now) I also have an 11 year old Lab/Shepard mix which they got into a couple nasty fights over food but other than that they do not fight. SO I'm wondering how I can curtail this behavior as I said the other dogs just ran up to her and she went at them like they just stole her bone! I've noticed when I had her at the dog park (The small enclosed a…

Anyone who has issues with aggression on leash or aggression full stop, should have a read of this article: Handling On-Leash Aggression It's a really great basic guide of what not to do, and what TO do. It's not an explicit guide and anyone experiencing this problem needs to get professional help but it's a good place to start to help understand the behaviour.

Not sure whats happening with Logan but he seems to be getting worse at sleeping in his crate, it only took us a few days to get him used to it and after a week he was sleeping 8 hours a night which we thought was too good to be true... and now i think it might be lol Logan is now 12 weeks old and for the last 3/4 nights hes been a nightmare and has been howling for hours at random times for no reason at all and im wondering what could have possibly changed to do this, but there really isnt anything we are doing differently. Ill explain the routine we have always done and if you guys can see any problem areas please let me know! We feed him at 8:30am 12pm …

Ok so Sarah has suggested a training weekend as her and Saz missed Elveden unfortunately. Where I live we have a feild with different ways you can take, one lap round it (has trees n stuff too) is just under a mile I think, so perfect for new dogs starting out, and you can go round as many times as you like and take different paths etc. It has a small parking area. This is literally 10 minutes walk from my house, where your welcome to stay over, its nothing special but its free, has a garden for the pups and sofas/a campbed to kip on. It also means that we dont have far to go to the loo or to get a cuppa!! Im free any sunday, and saturday…

Yoda has always eaten very quickly, to the point of you can put it down turn around, turn back and it's gone, but as of late he's started to get more pushy with Tehya. My wife said that they can't be feed in the same room, well I can now see why. The other night Tehya was a little off her food, so didn't start it straight away, by the time Yoda had finished his, she decided to start... You can probably see where this is going. He started growling and hissing at then an almighty noise came from the create as have to create them in the night. I went out and told him to leave it, he backed off turned round and started again, told him again to leave it…

Hello, I need some advice on how to change a bad behavior. Duke is such a pleasing dog, he listens quite well and he’s come a long way. He’s 1 year and 10 months and knows his role in the house, and knows the rules. However, I cannot break him out of eating up a bag of charcoal. My BBQ is covered which he leaves alone, but after I BBQ and I am waiting for the coals to go out to cover the BBQ up again he will get a hold of the coals and destroy the bag and throw the coals all over the place. It sounds cute, and funny, but it’s getting old and frustrating. I have scolded him many many times. This is probably the 10th time it has happen…

I am getting concerned about Willows behavior some may remember about me saying when she was coming into heat she was snapping at other dogs then she came in heat all seemed fine. Well today i had a meet with Emma ( Elmo ) she is new to the forum with her furbaby Vixen. Well Willow at first seemed ok but then went for Vixen in a way I have never seen before. We walked next to each other so they calmed down like you do when you first meet a new dog. Everything seemed fine they just walked. We stopped on the beach to let them have a run about Willow was then offleash, Vixen had her long lead on they both seemed ok and went in play bow but then all of a sudden Will…

Hi everybody, I'm new to this website, and I need some advice about my nine-month-old Hubble. I would really appreciate it. I love him so, so much, but I am afraid he has some sort of aggression. Whenever he's laying down, or sometimes even just sitting, and you either step too close to him or handle his rear in any way, he speaks up angrily and kind of suddenly jumps. I don't necessarily know whether it's a growl, or him just kind of speaking. Either way, I know he's not happy with the handling of his back end. He doesn't snarl or anything like that. A few times he has put his mouth on my hand or forearm, but he doesn't actually bite down. He just looks at me …

Some of you may know I am a lecturer in Animal Studies and a few days ago we found out about a module change, typical!! So we have just scrapped a subject and it has been replaced by something else. Well part of it is animal training which includes doing some theory behind it and then actually putting some training into practice. So today I had a brainwave, I have always intented to train Tikaani and Aiyana to pull for scootering. What if I take my two in and I can get the students to get them started on the commands and some light pulling (with a tyre)? It may only be a matter of about 4 sessions so would only be the initial basics. The training …

Am I correct in thinking that this would be the equivalent of a toddler challenging boundaries? He used to be so good at coming inside from the garden when called/whistled but now he won't. It's really hard to persuade him to come in. He also used to be really good on the lead and walk alongside me (for occasional treats) but now he pulls me really bad and I'm struggling to control him. Also because he pulls it makes him gasp for breath, which scares me and makes me not to want to correct him in case I hurt him.

Ok so I am thinking about investing in a new vehicle as the dog's are kinda outgrowing my car as it is, plus it costs me a fortune to run (V6 3.3l and very thirsty, around 17mpg damn American cars grrr but it is LPG so I can double it to 30ish mpg because of price of LPG and insurance is a joke considering I have 6 years NCB) What vans do you guys recommend? Only needs to accommodate 4 dogs and will be used daily as well for commuting mainly motorway miles. Thinking SWB kinda thing What mileage are you getting from the vans? (realistically) Thanks, Kelly

His best friend is a 6 month old Rottweiler, they play every day for an hour and are best friends. Today me and the Rottie's owner were tossing around a stick and they'd go and fetch it. All of a sudden they both ignored the stick, a few minutes later they both ran for it and just started snarling and attacking each other! I pushed Embry out of the way with my foot since they were like on back legs, and grabbed him by the collar, handed him to Keaton(my bf) and Nicole(Rottie's owner) grabbed the rottie. I ran over, grabbed the stick and threw it over the fence so they couldn't grab it. Embry obviously initiated the fight by growling and snarling beforehand. As soon as we …

Since I got the canny collars I have been able to manage all 3 on a walk together which for me is brilliant With work patterns being how they are alot of our walks have been on streets not the usual woods or heath area where it's generally quiet. Yesterday and this morning we have been out walking during times of heavy traffic. Marley and Bandit have been fine but Gizmo started to walk right behind me for a few seconds and touch the back of me leg with his nose He has never done that before and since yesterday has been doing it really frequently, almost constantly when there is alot of traffic coming past. Jamie's sisters dog Rudy, Engli…

Got the first canny collar and though it was too big, we used it once and returned it. Got the new one over the weekend and what a difference a collar makes! Jackson was walking at my side, with Andy on the other, both at heel, and I didn't say a word! Now, if the 2 black cats and 2 stupid people walking an ankle biter hadn't gotten in our way, it would have been a perfect walk. Highly recommend the canny collar. Not sure why it works even better than a regular choke, but it does, and he really doesn't seem to mind it too much, only trying a couple times to get it off his nose! Back to walking twice a day!
