I found the perfect way to squeeze more exercise into Kenobi's schedule. Unfortunately our yard is not fenced so Kenobi never really has a chance to get up to full speed. He's still quite timid when outside, so a dog park is still out of the question as it would take hours to get him back on the lead. I went shopping at the local equestrian shop and found a thirty foot long, one inch wide nylon lunge line. The brass snap looked quite cheap, so I hack sawed it off and replaced with a carabiner. The trial run went great in our backyard; I attached the line to his harness and he was able to get up to full speed and thunder around for a few laps! Essentially I am l…

I have a friend with a Malamute who howls constantly when they leave the house. He never does it when they're home, he sleeps downstairs in his crate, and is quiet at night, even though he can't see them. If they're out in the garden, he doesn't do it, it is only if they have all left the house. They have tried going out the back door etc, but it doesn't make any difference. He will howl for the entire time they are out, they have set up a webcam with a live feed to check on him, and he just doesn't stop. They have tried putting him in his crate, leaving him out of his crate. They give him kongs, bones etc, he won't touch anything until they come home, the…

hello, Thought this link may be of intrest to some http://www.dogwelfarecampaign.org/about-this-website.php The web-site is designed to give the media and members of the public with more information about the behaviour of dogs and the possible consequences of using aversive training techniques. Personally i think it has some valid points. Its anti shock/prong/choke collar, however these people are also against shaker bottles and water sprays, which personally i find an exellent method of distraction with various dogs when showing problem bhaviours, (grabbing, biting, self mutilation)

Good mornign all, I recently put my Husky on a raw food diet. I was at my wits end; she has a gastro intestinal problem, so I went with the raw food diet. It's been about one week and she has taken to deficate while she eats. By ""taken" I mean she has done it 3 times. I have been researching all morning and I can not come up with any answers. I am very baffled. My husband is very close to rehoming her. We have had her for about five months and are very tired of cleaning up poop in the house. BTW; it's always diahrea Any ideas, suggestions, theories are welcome.

Hey all As most of you would know about the training we are doing with our boys. The method of training we are using is known as the Amichein method which is used by many trainers over the world. I first found out about this method when I contacted our trainer who has studied this method for a few years and was taught about this method by Jan Fennell, also known as the Dog Listener. I was going to do a basic write up about this particular method and how it has helped us, personally, have leadership in our home. Was going to do this via a blog but just wanted to hear what everyone else thought about it first as it is complicated so may take…

This is currently what I feed my Corgi mix and was curious if this was fine to feed a Sibe or if I should get a different brand for my pup? Currently my pup is on Iams but I aim to change that when I get her as that is not the best food (my opinion no insult to anyone intended). No one in my area sells Taste of the Wild but a shop near us sells something similar but I'm kinda iffy on it.

Just after hearing others experiences as many of you have more than 1 Husky. We recently added Falkor (8 week old male) to our household to be with Noushka (9 year old bitch). Some of you have seen Noushka with your Huskies in the dog park and have seen she seems to like her own space. Well Falkor really likes cuddling up to her which is fine on the floor, but if he climbs in bed with her she just moves out and finds somewhere else to sleep. With playing, sometimes she plays but will pin him down or try and mount him and Falkor just tries to playfully bite. He will then sit a few meters form her pawing at her like a tough dog. In the gard…

Ok been reading a few of the posts on food and diet, Max has settled in well, and eats well. (So far not left anything in his bowel. When we got him he was 23.7 Kg, the vet said that he needed to put on some weight, yes you could feel his ribs and backbone, he is now up to 26 Kg, but I don’t want to over do it. He gets 4 cups (like you get out of a coffee machine) of dry food a day, 2 in the morning dry, and 2 in the evening with a bit of wet mixed in, now most say that Husky’s will only eat what they need, but he still seams hungry, this may be a trick rubbing off from my older dog, who has always been a scrounge, and loves her food. …

What treats do you use when training? When i'm out on a walk i take gravy bones with me as they're not as easy to squish in my pocket but at home i tend to use bits of ham / chicken or cheese. Just curious as to what others use?

I would soooo hug you if I met you in Person. After doing a sucessful TOT session with Solo last night and some brief "practice training" with Solo today, the dogs are already calming down very well. While I was cleaning in the kitchen 30 minutes ago they started getting really loud and obnoxious and getting ready to start fighting. Solo goes to the crate and goes inside sometimes when I asked him, but I am amazed at his manners today. I told him "crate" and when he got in there, I told him "stay" so he layed down. He has not moved from the spot in the crate where he layed down, and the crate door is open. I didnt ha…

So Kaidan is blowing his coat for the first time since we got him (about 2 months ago). I've been struggling with him on finding a good grooming ritual. Like I've said in previous posts, he was neglected prior to us rescuing him. When we first got him his hind legs were literally two very huge dreads with paws attached. He acted as if he'd never seen a brush in his life, and getting near him with one was a challenging and experience. We didn't get far before we decided to give up and take him to get groomed. Now his hair is all tangle free, but because he's blowing his coat, I've been brushing him daily. I always give him treats as soon as I pull out the brush…

In light of My experience with the people last night and someone elses experience with a potential new owner, I have to ask... Why is it that people seem to/expect a puppy to be absolutely perfect and/or well trained when they get them? After thinking about my meeting with the lady yesterday, it dawned on me last night that what they were expecting to get a perfect and comp- letely trained dog so they wouldnt have to do any work themselves. How can anyone expect this?

It's never too early to start planning for the 5th November!! Whilst the law states that fireworks can only be retailed during the two weeks prior to 5th November, but online suppliers sell all year round, making all of the of the autumn and winter months a potential nightmare for dogs with noise phobias. But fear not! With lots of patience, foresight and planning, you should be able modify your dogs anxiety during the bangs and whizzes. * Desensitise him by playing a fireworks cd on the lowest volume, whilst you carry on with your day to day routine. Initially, play the cd so quietly that you cant hear it he will still be able to hear it! After a w…

I'm hoping someone on here can explain this to me. I've been comparing a few different brands and can't figure out why you can have one with such a high calorie content, the other having low, and yet both recommend nearly the same amount of cups of food per pound of your dogs weight. Here are the brands in question. By Nature: Active Formula Calorie Content: 440 kcal/cup** (calculated) Feeding guildlines: 30 – 50 lbs Adult feed 1 to 2 1â„4 cups per day Ingredients: Chicken Meal, Ground Barley, Chicken Fat (Stabilized with Mixed Tocopherols), Ground Oats, Lamb Meal, Chicken, Flaxseed Meal, Ground Brow…

do you reckon its possible to have a working sibe walk to heel?? i'v been trying with kira but if we work a lot on heel, her running while in harness suffers, and if shes doin really well in the harness she pulls like hell on a walk.... also at the rally, i didnt see a single working dog walkin to heel, they all seemed to be pulling, even if wearing a collar not a harness. is it a case of if i want her to work then i have to be dragged around? i dont mind its just that i cant seem to be able to get her to transition from harness to collar.

has anyone tried this?? it looks brilliant, and its cheap! i got 5 packets in pets at home last night for under a fiver. they do... tripe, beef, chicken, rabbit, lamb (i think), white fish (£1 more), turkey and some other mixed flavours!! a good selection they were all 79p except the fish which was £1.79 or something no fillers, additives, cereals, colourings or preservatives, just 100% minced up meat in a frozen block! Kira loves them! prize choice

do you playfight with your sibes?? we always have with no problems until now. i banned all playfighting/roughhousing with kira yesterday as we have a newborn around, ricks baby nephew, and while shes fine with him now, in a year or 2 he'll be toddling and crawling around. and yesterday when i was playing with her she bit down HARD on my arm, and wouldnt let go, i had a jumper on but if that was a baby or toddler that would be very serious. it wasnt a vicious bite, just an excitable play bite that went to far. so all fighting etc has been banned for the babies safety. biting me = not a major issue tbh. biting Cody = serious. rehome or PT…

Yaaaay!! My yard is now bricked up and fortified. Woohooo! now the boys can play outside and I wont be afraid about Solo escaping. It was like a wicked cool miracle or something...my neighbors across the street must be moving. They put out about 50 bricks by the road. I snagged those as fast as I could and eventhough my foot is killin me now I went ahead and put the bricks around the fenceline, and let the boys out cuz i feel bad I cant walk them right now. its working!!!!!!!!

Five weeks ago, Zoya's stool sample came back positive for both hook and whip worms. We put her on a three day wormer called Panacur. Two weeks later, she again had the three day wormer Panacur. Today, two weeks after her last worming, her stool sample came back positive for hook worms. We've kept the yard picked up, but Zoya continues to dig and ingest dirt. The vet said we would have to take off the top four inches of soil and replace it to remove all worms and their eggs, which of course for an acre plus of ground, would be cost prohibitive. The vet said she is getting reinfected, and the prime source is the top soil. We have rabbits, racoons, deere, possums, fi…
