Hi just wanted to pick some brains please???? Steve has got this annoying habit of peeing every morning before we come down to let them out, even if we run down as soon as he cries once he already has peeed and it is cold so know he did it earlier!!! make sure he has a pee before bed and not too much water, sometimes he has not even drunk anything throught the night yet still pees!! Try to hear if its the little dog in lounge up and about causing it as steve gets excited when he gets up and desperate to be with him, not sure if its cause he physically cant hold it or it is a tantrum!? In the day he does not do it apart from sunday when he shredded my purse wh…

Training Dogs to Pull There are many aspects to training dogs to pull. Probably the most fundamental is *start young*. Get a puppy used to its harness, just as you would a collar and leash. But, don't start your pup on pulling things until they are at least 8 months old, and the only very light objects. As your pup gets older you can gradually increase the load. Start out with a small empty milk carton and let the dog drag the empty milk carton around behind its harness for a while. The emphasis is NOT on weight, just on having fun dragging a VERY LIGHT weight behind it. It is important to realize that one can injure a puppy's bones, structure, and spirit by do…

Any advice on how to have your puppy coexist with two grumpy cats? Mishka (7 weeks) loves to try to play with our cats, but all they do is hiss and swat at her. DH is worried that MIshka will grow up hating the cats and may even attack them when she gets older. He's been reading some horror stories about Sibes chomping cats to death. Eek!!

We have a 7 week old Sibe. She was taken away from her mom too soon (at 4 weeks) due to a backwoods breeder -- he told us she was older than she was and we didn't know any better. She's been doing very well with her overall health, toilet training, eating, adjusting to our family, playing with the cats, etc... BUT, she has a really nasty biting habit. She likes to chew on our arms, legs, feet -- you name it. I'm worried that since she was removed from her mom too soon, she won't learn proper bite inhibition. I looked at the sticky post by Merlin regarding bite inhibition. So far, we've tried all but popping her in the nose with no success. She just keeps biting us. I'm no…

Hi everyone, We are going to try to add a couple of things to Missy potty training. Previously, we would watch her and wait for her to sniff and then we'd take her outside. Lately she has had a few accidents inside and I know its our fault for not having the door open or watching her closely. I have read of people training dogs to ring a bell, bark, and other things, but I have yet to find a source that discloses how they trained that behavior. If anyone has any input on what you use or how to do any of those it would be great. Thanks a ton The Blackshears

I started off Nira with a regular nylon buckle collar, which is what she wears just hanging around the house and the yard. However, she seems to be extremely skilled at escaping from these collars even when snug and after several scary chases around the neighborhood, I switched to a chain collar for walks. When we started taking basic obedience classes the trainer suggested switching to a prong/pinch collar. I found several sources online that cite research suggesting the prong collar causes less neck trauma and is better than the chain. Of course we still use the harness for bike riding and a combination of a nylon slip collar and a harness when she go…

I finally had the chance to get my baby's hips xrayed. He got a clean bill of health from the doctor, and I would really like to get involved with bikejoring to get my husky exercised, because apparently he's getting too chunky I have been reading a lot online in other places about people who prefer a scooter to a bike, but I remember back when I was a kid, I had a really crappy scooter, and I could never keep my feet on it both at the same time because of balance issues. Now granted, perhaps it's easier to keep your balance on some of the newer, nicer ones, but I just don't have a good childhood memory of scooters lol So I opted for a bike, even though I'm no bike exper…

Hello, Our 6 month old husky has started to have a lot more accidents and is getting a bit more stubborn with listening. She has had two accidents in the house. We tell her No then put her outside but I am starting to feel that is not enough. Do you guys have any suggestions? Also could this be connected to her coming up on her heat cycle? She has been doing a lot of sniffing around ( not sure its because we had the other husky here for one night) or if it could be an early sign of her going into heat. She has started to lick a bit more so we are going to call the vet and try to get her in. Thanks The Blackshears

Hello All, I joined this forum in January when I got my puppy Calcifer. Things have been really hard with him. We have tried everything imaginable to get him to do numerous "good dog" behaviors. Let me first say that I bring him to puppy socialization, have put him through two training courses, and bring him to the dog park each week as much as I can (which works out to being about twice a week with my course schedule. next semester I plan on scheduling all my classes earlier so I can bring him more often.) We also bring him on walks but I think I may need to walk him more. He is a very intelligent dog, but as huskies are, he is very very stubborn. OKay.. so let's s…

Hi guys Every time I log on to the forum there seems to be a new thread created by someone who is at the end of their tether because their dog pulls their arm out of its socket each time they take them for a walk. I am only a training novice myself, but I thought it would be handy to put all the tips we have to train our dogs to walk on a loose leash in one thread. Why Do Dogs Pull on The Leash? Dogs pull on the leash because we inadvertently teach them that's how to get where they want to go. Imagine for a second that you're a dog and your owner is taking you for a walk; there are all sorts of rewarding things for you to pull towards - o…

its something we would do anyway but as part of the adoption agreement with Many Tears we have to take Tess to puppy training so today i have registered her with our vets 'puppy training coordinator' and we are due to start on 24th June, we arent really experiencing any real problems at the moment but hey prevention is better than cure so we hope to guide her in the right direction minimising potential problems. Housetraining is the biggy at the mo (as with any pup) we had it fairly easy with Gizzi who was 9 weeks when we got her, she cottened on very quickly, i do feel it will take longer with Tess which is fine but any tips would be great, she is prone to 'excitabl…

My sibe is a lovely dog, he is so effectionate and loves t run and play however when we have visitors he goes psycho jumping all over them with excitement and no matter what I say or do he doesnt listen. He also acts the same when we see a dog on walks. He pulls soo much on the lead too, so much that he jumps down the road on his hind legs. We are going to see if a behaviourist can give us some advice but any ideas on here are welcome. We do have another sibe and I think some of it is fighting for affection and competing with each other but I can handle my other sibe as she is more laidback and actually listens when I tell her off. They are so different. Need help e…

Hi guys Just have a training brag from the weekend I have to share. Daisy had her first obedience trial on Sunday although it was a trainee judge so the points sadly don't count towards her obedience title. It was very last minute and we were rushed to get there as we only found out about it a few hours before, and then we were stuffed around a bit before we went in the ring and had to wait almost two hours for our run. At the last minute our club President called me over and asked if I would mind running Daisy in a Novice which is a class higher than the one we have been training to compete in, as they were a dog short in their ring. I know Daisy ca…

I've kinda disappeared from the forum, it seems. I'm back again, hopefully with problems you all can advise. I have moved to a bigger house with a big fenced in yard for Kira. Kira is now 10mo old as of yesterday. She's been alot better about pottying outside, she seems to only potty inside when she is left alone downstairs. However, I've been having a lot worse problems now than her pottying habbits. Last week, my mother brought home a 2mo old cockapoo named Priscilla. Pris is just over 3lbs. Kira.. I don't know how much she weighs but as you can imagine at LEAST 10-13x that. As you can probably imagine, it's ab…

Hey guys...so someone suggested to use D.A.P (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) diffuser or spray to help Hachi with his calmness and separation anxiety...i was wondering does any other husky owners use this? and if they do...how long do you use it for? i have read some reviews that say D.A.P will work, but when they stop using it, the dogs go back to their same selves and the calmness disappears and the anxiety comes back (it was one of the smaller breed dogs)...I was wondering did anyone else encounter a problem like this? I don't want Hachi to rely on D.A.P for the rest of his life. I understand that it is the same as drugging him each day. But fortunately Amazon has it fo…

Ok, so here's the story. Hachi is a very very DEPENDENT puppy. He relies on me and stays by my side throughout the day. Since I recently graduated from college, and am currently unemployed, we spend a lot of time together at home (mainly just laying on the couch) and out of the home (walks, pet stores, etc.). For the last 7 weeks, he has not learned to stay at home in his crate by himself. I have been training him from the beginning to be independent in his crate when left alone, but it has not been working. I need suggestions and help from others who have also experienced these problems. I am definite that Hachi suffers from separation anxiety. I will say it i…
