Just after picking someone's brains really. I understand that if you rescue a Husky through SHCGB you get a welfare number that enables you to race with them. What happens if you rescue a husky that didn't come through SHCGB? Is there any way one can race? Also I would imagine this would be quite taboo but is there anyway of racing with a Huskamute. I get the impression this is very frowned upon that the dog wouldn't be one or the other but I am looking at the poor love, and she is sooooo pretty, but we would really start like to start working a dog and so it would be foolish of me to think of offering a home to a dog that we wouldn't be able to race. Any opi…

So this season up until now I have been working hard on building a faster race team. I have put well over 100 miles on Ronan and Jill in training and Tundra is well on her way to being ready for her first race! I thought I had my focus set and I knew exactly how this season was going to play out. Now I have a dilemma. My buddy whom I have been training with sometimes has asked me if I would run a 4-dog team of his Alaskans for him. I don't know what to do? Do I run my Siberians and his dogs not get to race at all or do I run a team for him and pass off the Siberian team for either my dog handler to run or a friend of mine? One of them running the Alaskan team is not an op…

A collaboration of frequently used sledding terms (with pictures!) to help those of you getting started. Bear in mind with the commands, there is no rule stating you have to use the universal sledding commands, anyone can use whatever word or sound they wish so long as they are consistant and the dogs understand. Remember though, if you ever plan on mixing packs or teams, you might confuse the new dogs with your different terms whereas if you use the universal commands, chances are good the other dogs know those very same ones. COMMANDS Gee - turn right Haw - turn left Hike* - lets go or pick up the pace On-by - never mind whatever is…

Today I learned a new lesson again. Mushers rule number one: If you don´t have a proper anchor in your sleigh, don´t ever let go of the dogs or sleigh! So here goes the whole story: Today I was harnessing my huskies for a sleighride. And naturally they were really excited. So when the dogs were ready, I said them "Stay". As usually. Ronja is quite obedient dog. And normally they will stay still until I get to the sleigh. But not today! I didn´t even get near to the sleigh, when the dogs decided "now is time to RUN! And fast!" And so I was watching when my huskies ran to the horizon. Along the way they scared of bunch of l…

We have 2 sibes, a 10 month old male and a 5 year old female. My husband would love to get into racing/scootering mainly for fun not competition. We would like some advice as niether dog has running exerience. What is the best way to start training them, and how much training and excersice should they have a day. We dont want to over do it and hurt them.

hey as a lot of you know i run kira on a scooter, and should hopefully be getting a proper (race allowed) scooter for xmas, along with lines and a nice padded x-back harness. for anyone who is interested or thinking about running their sibes you're welcome to come and use my equipment, and see if your dog (and you) enjoys it. Even if I dont get the scooter i want i still have a temporary one that i'v been usuing which is fine, it just wouldnt be allowed in a race, but its good for practice runs, and if you dont have a harness i have an adjustable harness, tho its not an x-back, but I'v used it with kira since we started no problem, or if the dogs are the same …

Hi, I know of about 5 other folks here on the forum who have or are looking for huskies. In Deciding to bring Solo home I have been doing some research on huskies in Hawaii, and breeders as well. Alot of the breeders here (for huskies anyway) are bybers, who payed out alot of money for pups without papers and then just started breeding. Not a big shocker for Hawaii really. The lines for Solo's family really do origionate in alaska, but his breeder didnt show her dogs so the trail for lineage ends with his grandparents who came in the late 80's to hawaii. As for other husky lines here there are only 2 breeders here that I would consider if I want to g…

As iv said before, me and Chez are looking into running Skye and Kira, but they're both unregistered now apparently we have to register the girls on the non pedigree sled dog list or something, but to do that we need to be referred by an existing member.... (can you see where this is heading? lol) now what is involved in this?? does kira have to wait 3 months to be registered (shes 9 months atm)?? do they both have to be spayed or can this wait until after registration?? do the dogs have to be assessed by an official?? how much does it cost to get them onto this register?? once registered c…

Hey all, This is coming a bit late as now Chewy really loves to go biking but, yesterday at the park, another husky owner told me its BAD to be biking with chewy. I only bike him for about 30 minutes right now but I had intended to take it up to 45 minutes in the next 2 weeks or so as he loves it so much he wants to keep on going after 30 minutes already. My question is (because I dont remember the reason they gave): Could I be doing any harm by exercising him by biking?? I dont want to mess up his joints or anything but biking seems to be helping him get the exercise he needs and he likes it so much that if i pull out his harness an…

The first ride with Chewy was fantastic! Other than the bike giving me a teeny bit of trouble (going uphill) because the trailer was too heavy (both kids were in it because my son begged me to ride in it with his sister), the ride was awesome. The "walkydog bike leash" is fantastic, and does really well of keeping chewbacca under control if he actually gives me any trouble. He was really quite well mannered during the ride, even when it came time to use the breaks. At first he was so excited that he got going a bit fast but I told him to "behave' and put on the breaks and he slowed down easily. We only went about 4 blocks because its so hot but I think that was more than …

First of all im going to have to register myself on here and stop using stephs log in, ha ha. (Its Paul, Stephs Finace) I have always fancied doing this ever since i got Oscar but was just wondering where to start realy? near our home we have a forestry road that is used as a down hill mountain biking track on occasion and though that would be a great place to take oscar as everywhere else i take him for a walk is pedestrianised. The main things i wanted to know is would one husky be able to pull me and a scooter or would i have 2 wait till he get another one? also what type of lead would i have to have and how often would people recomme…

I usually run 2 dogs at a time on a scooter, and my son comes out with me, so they're used to running behind each other, albeit on two different scooters. I had the chance of a go on a rig at the weekend (and will have my own by this coming weekend:D). We hooked all 4 of them up, but the back 2 caught up with the front 2 very easily. I put my big sibe Diesel at the back, as I thought he would be a good wheel dog cos he's so big and strong. However, he is definitely the alpha male at home, and he decided he had to be at the front, so I swapped them round and made him the lead dog. This seemed to stop the problem slightly, but not entirely. How can I get them to run p…

Scootering in the torrential rain - pic added Had some friends from the East coast over visiting mutual friends only an hours drive from me today, so we loaded 4 dogs up, 2 scooters and went to meet them. Now it is August isn't it? Pouring down with rain, cold enough for a jumper under my not waterproof coat, very dark, trails were all soaking wet and muddy, but what a fantastic time we had. I usually live in my work trousers, green combats, but thought I'd be a bit girly today, so put my white, flowery 3/4 length combats on instead big mistake. I don't know if anybody got a picture of me, but they certainly were nowhere near white by the end. …

We are starting up a club here in Southern Ireland for scootering, backpacking, cani-cross etc but cannot find anybody willing to cover us for public liability insurance. If anybody knows of a company in the UK that might cover us, please let me know. We don't expect them to cover people personally, we can all get individiual insurance no problem, thru a UK company, but they won't do the club public liability insurance! Please help, we really want to get this club up and running properly.
