yep you read that right is is a reminder to everybody (hopefully lol) to always....... watch your sibes when eating im posting this because of my little scare last night when feeding kira some more of her pig head (she clearly hadnt eaten enough and was hungry again by the time we got home). We were out in the garden and while she was eating she got a bit stuck in her throat, the signs were: kind of gagging but not as bad as when shes gunna be sick, moving her head back and forth, trying to chew something which wasnt there, and stopping eating. I put my had down her throat and tried to get it but couldnt, so i started smacking her (rather hard actual…

I have seen many health questions asked on here and a lot of the answers involve apple cider vinegar. I thought I'd look into this more as to what properties it actually has and what health issues it can help with, I was surprised what I found it covered. Here's a starter, but if you have used it for other things, let us know here. Also tell us whether it helped or not http://m.wikihow.com/Use-Apple-Cider-Vinegar-for-Dogs

Dog Heatstroke Survival Guide Know how to treat and prevent this dangerous condition. What is heatstroke? In simple terms, heatstroke occurs when a dog loses its natural ability to regulate its body temperature. Dogs dont sweat all over their bodies the way humans do. Canine body temperature is primarily regulated through respiration (i.e., panting). If a dogs respiratory tract cannot evacuate heat quickly enough, heatstroke can occur. To know whether or not your dog is suffering from heatstroke (as opposed to merely heat exposure), its important to know the signs of heatstroke. A dogs normal resting temperature is about 100.5 to…

About two years ago I had Shayne at a park hiking when I was approached by a woman and her lab. As she approached I began shoveling food in Shayne’s face to keep her from being too concerned about the lab. Out of absolutely nowhere, this woman began yelling at me and berating me about starving Shayne (yeah, I know, ironic since I was shoveling hot dogs in her face). She threatened to call the humane society and report me for abuse/neglect. Pointing toward Shayne, she said, “She is absolutely too skinny! You can see all her muscles … she’s all skin and bone!†The kicker? She had a show-line lab who was … well, rather rotund. Okay, that’s a really nice …

Healthy Food suppliments For Huskies and Malamutes. When I was 10 my parents selected their first breeding pair of Siberian Huskies. Over the last 17 years I have come to really love this breed. I prefer them as family dogs over evey other, despite their size and their many naughty habits...lol. My least favorite issue with huskies is that some eat very well and will take any food you put down for them (when I was 3 we owned a husky who would literally eat mud pies...LOL) and then some of them are such choosy eaters that in order to ensure good health and growth in the first years of their lives you must find a way to add something both nutritious a…

There are a lot of questions that come up regarding what to feed, how much to feed, when to feed, leave it out for them, pick it up after so many minutes; and the list goes on. So here's my take on dog food and feeding my dogs. People have a tendency to get hung up on buzz words. "Holistic", "organic", "natural" are three that come to mind. Then there are those same buzz words with "ultra" placed in front of them. "Grain-free" has also become somewhat of a buzz word, only because it is used so frequently. The more a word is used within a language, it often times begins to loose its distinctiveness. But I digress. I have fed my dogs Nutro Ultra Puppy, Diamond Nat…

[Raw Feeding Threads #1-5 Merged by SolitaryHowl] [Original threads created by Sid_Wolf] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Raw vs BARF... Whats the difference? There are 2 variations of raw feeding, BARF and true Raw, both are similar but have a few differences. BARF can stand for 2 things, depending on who your talking to, some say it stands for Bones And Raw Food, others say it stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food, both are correct. BARF involves feeding raw meat and bones, along with a mix of fruit and vegetables, and various suppliments, this is because BARF works on the idea of dogs being omnivores, and th…

Do you have any old remedies/tips if so addthem here 1) Bran, fuller's earth, french chalk and talcum powder = All these will absorb grit and dirt from fur, in the same way that shampoo cleans hair. Shake on to the area leave for a while to obsorb, brush out gently but thoroughly. 2) Salt = This will absorb urine, pour a generous amount on to carpet, leave for a few hoursto soak up the liquid. Then vacuum. 3) Many dogs have cracked and dry paws. An effective low cost treatment is to apply petroleum jelly or Vaseline to its paws. Apply daily for two to five days and the cracked and dry paws will smoothen out. As the cracked paws heel,…

Aurora had an episode of reverse sneezing last night, if you dont know what it is its pretty distressing for you as it seems like the dogs choking. I thought id do a what is it and how to treat it thread. Reverse Sneezing (Pharyngeal Gag Reflex) Authored by: Becky Lundgren, DVM Reverse sneezing is a disconcerting event in which a dog makes unpleasant respiratory sounds that sound like it is dying -- or will die in the next few minutes. Reverse sneezing sounds similar to the honking noise made by a dog with a collapsing trachea, but reverse sneezing is a far simpler condition that usually does not need any treatment. It is called reverse sneezing because it sounds …

Hi Everyone! Though I'm not feeling great today I've been promising Sarah I'd make her some new cookies and since not moving, while tempting, makes everything worse I decided to get to it. Here's our newest recipe and a photo log of what poor Sarah goes through on baking day. Sarah's Peanut Butter & Cheddar Cookies 1½c whole wheat flour ½c oatmeal, processed to fine meal 1 tsp flaxseed meal (opt) 1 tsp raw wheat germ (opt) 2 eggs ½c milk (+1 tbsp if needed) ⅔c peanut butter ½ to ¾c shredded cheddar cheese or other cheese as desired Set oven to 350°F to preheat and lightly grease a large cookie sheet. Combine flou…

If you've noticed your dog has been having trouble walking, going up stairs, getting up, or with general movement...it is possible your dog has issues with his joints - especially if he is older. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to hear of a dog as young as 5 years old begin to develop arthritis, or other joint problems. This is due to a variety of factors, including but not limited to: - Poor breeding/genetics - Poor upbringing - the puppy was exercised too much at a young age. (The general rule is +5 minutes to each walk per month of age. Up until their joints stop growing - around 14-16 months) - Injury (or ligament tear) at a young age. - Overweight/Obesity (ca…

Okay, ive seen a few qs on feeding amounts for puppies, teens and even adults SO i thought it was long overdue to set some guidelines for new and just slightly confused Husky owners;) We could make it a sticky in the food and diet section so new members can find it easily:) The main rule here is that no guideline is concrete, all sibes are different, some come from different lines and all sibes are individuals, but by other owners putting their daily amounts it may prove some help. We'll start with puppies, 7weeks When i got Alaska i fed her 3 times a day, 3 non heaped handfuls of kibble in warm water. Sorry i cant give the e…

My Upendi probably has to have surgery. His uhmm, testicles are not where they are supposed to be and are more than likely still by the abdomen, so on the next visit to the vet next month, if they haven't moved down, they'll have to go in and just remove them. IF not it increases his chances of getting cancer. Has this happened to anyone else? I WAS SO SAD when the vet said "CANCER" but then she quickly explained it and oh man I was scared ha. Anyway, has anyone heard of another dog you know with this same situation or possibly your own dog? And does anyone know how much this could cost me? On a mucch, MUCH happier no…

I know this question is a bit rich coming from me considering I advise it a lot to people and have done a lot when I worked at the vets, but it's only now that Aleu is 2 years 4 months old and that Robyn has said she thinks we should get her spayed that it's made me stop and question it, so I now see how it makes some people feel. There's a part of me that's saying I don't want to risk putting her under anaesthetic, most likely caused by the fact that when I worked at the vets, I saw 1 dog and 2 cats die from not being able to cope with the G.A. but they were a lot younger than Aleu, all around 6-7 months old. I know the pros ands cons myself, I've relayed them…

Okay a week ago we moved into this new house, since then embry has obviously been acting a bit strange. he hasn't been eating normally if we're lucky we can get a cup of TOTW in him a day. so the other day i picked up a pack of chicken wings and for the last 3 days have been giving him 2 for lunch and since then he has been sooo constipated, i think he has pooped three times in the last three days? today he had puppy class at 2pm, we got there and he was just acting weird! he wouldn't listen to a thing me, my boyfriend, my sister or the trainer said to him. he wasn't interested in any of his treats and he just kept trying to get out of the room. when we were doing recalls…

Asha again has some troubles, this time a little more personal. She's got discharge, and Nika never had this problem, so we're a little worried, it's sort of creamy yellow coloured, and looks like a urinary infection. Any ideas?
