Shepsky5 Posted October 26, 2017 Report Share Posted October 26, 2017 Hi, so am still a bit shaken. We live in a quiet suburban neighborhood with mowed manicured lawns... We were walking peacefully up the street to our house in the sunshine, when suddenly our neighbor's dog ran out of the yard with his leash trailing behind him, and attacked my dog! He has been barking and growling whenever we go by - their house is on the corner one block away, so we can't avoid it unless willing to walk a long detour. Anyway I was so surprised, I couldn't believe he was actually attacking - I was trying to drag my dog away (he met the attack head-on, with growls and bared teeth) but the attacking dog followed us - finally I got angry and I advanced on the attacking dog and yelled "Get Away!!" At that, he backed off. I realized that I actually have no idea what I should have done... I'm also worried that my own dog is going to become "dog-aggressive" after the incident. I checked my dog over carefully and I think his thick husky fur helped - no punctures, no bite wounds. He seems to have defended himself well, though he was confined on leash and the other dog was free. Anyway it was a nasty encounter and I'm mad that my neighbor, who came running out of the house at the noise, has not even come by to ask if my dog was hurt. ( I couldn't stay to discuss what happened of course, because our dogs were busy fighting...) What's the best way to handle a dog attacking your dog?!! Honestly, I would have kicked the s**t out of the dog & yelled to the dog owner that to get his ass here & get his aggressive dog! I truly would have kicked the dog. Next time, I'd take a stick with you for your protection. Definitely, you need to walk by the house tomorrow as normal in the hopes your dog gets any fear out sooner than later (confront the fear). I’ve read a few times that you and someone else would get behind each dog and lift their back legs from the ground and pull them apart. However I can’t see that one working with one person and two dogs. Unless you’re an octopus of course. [emoji12] I guess you just gotta do whatever you can in that kind of situation. Pretty poor attitude from the neighbour though I must say. You’d of at least thought that an apology would be in order considering the circumstances. Hope he’s ok. BingBlaze n Skyla Posted October 26, 2017 Report Share Posted October 26, 2017 Usually shouting I've found helps stop the dog in its tracks if it's just trying to be tough but if it's dead set on attacking that won't help , I've kicked the dog that attacked skyla , it had her pinned to the floor and stamped on its head it would not let her go , carry a spare slip lead if u can and use that to hold the dog up and away from yours .. To be fair tho each encounter with a dog wanting to attack will end up being different and even if u have a plan in place your not thinking straight n it all goes out the window .. chelseafan Posted October 26, 2017 Report Share Posted October 26, 2017 Wow, what an ignorant neighbour, glad you’re both unharmed, that could have been very nasty.I would knock their door and speak to them about what happened. Did the dog escape? When I’m walking my 2, we are always met by other dogs barking and/or growling and they mostly just look at the daft dogs and walk on, Luka sometimes growls back but he’s getting better but it hasn’t made them dog aggressive. If a dog came running up to mine aggressively and my 2 were on the lead I would let go of the lead so they are able to protect themselves. Olympia7 Posted November 1, 2017 Report Share Posted November 1, 2017 This has happened to me before while walking one of my huskies...the neighbor had the garage door cracked and their aggressive dog would run out and attack my dog (their dog was a black lab) I kicked and yelled at their dog and no one ever came out to get him, when I got home I called the Animal control officer and reported them, it happened again a week later another report was made and they were told to keep the dog contained or next time they would have to pay a fine, I didn't have any problems after that! Jay Posted November 1, 2017 Report Share Posted November 1, 2017 This happened to me a few years ago. I was walking all 3 and the neighbor's pit bull ran out the front door and charged us. Luckily none of mine were hurt and the neighbor came out and was able to get their dog and made sure we were all OK. After that I bought mace and carry that on our walks. I would probably knock on the neighbors door friendly but I would definitely talk to the neighbor. So that neighbors dog attacked us three more times! Neighbor, instead of walking his dogs, liked to casually tie them to his deck with their leashes...which is why they kept getting out ( second dog is not aggressive). I talked with him twice, telling him to secure his dogs! The third time, I threatened to report him to animal control and told him about the fines. I actually had the paperwork in my hand...and then, he began to walk his dogs instead of tying them outside. Now we sometimes pass them on walks and that dog is growling, snarling, barking and lunging at the end of its leash. I am feeling pretty smug that I have Rumo walking calmly in a Heel these days...his dog looks like a psycho in comparison! But, in general, we have changed our walk routes / times to avoid them. last note - neighbor is a nice guy! Just totally clueless about dogs. His daughter begged for a dog, and his son then begged for a dog, so they got two. Then both kids headed off to college, leaving them with 2 dogs. They seem to have no interest in dog training. Once, after their dog lunged and growled onleash at mine, I saw them hit the dog. I told them that would just make the aggression worse...so now, they just hang on while saying his name over and over again.( I went from hating this attacking dog, to wanting to train him...how ironic??!) Luckily, Rumo remains friendly with other dogs. He was not really hurt in the attacks, although I did wipe dog spit off his fur. He always met attacks head-on, with teeth, so it seemed that the other (smaller) dog could not get a good bite in on him. And owner usually came running out after a minute ( he only tied dog outside when he was at home) so the episodes were short. anyway...the threat to file a report with Animal Control did the trick! Hurting one dog to defend another is a difficult decision. I had 2 of my own dogs that would fight, one an Old English, the other a Jack Russell. On one of the worst occasions the bigger dog had the smaller one by the neck and was shaking it. I ran into the kitchen and grabbed a big knife then realised the irony of what I was contemplating, whilst I took a few seconds my young son ran in and tipped a jug of water over them, instant separation, just enough time to grab bigger dog and push her into the garden. The Jack needed the vet and he warned that if it happened again the Jack could die just from shock. The JR was the aggressive dog funnily enough and when my daughter moved out and took it with her I was so relieved.
