Regular grooming helps keep your dog/s coat clean, healthy and managable and also prevent matts (which can cause yeast infections) from occuring. Also grooming can help prevent: 1) Periodontal disease (http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2089&aid=379) which is caused by un-cared teeth 2) Ear infections caused by an excessive build up of ear wax / dirt and bacteria. Step by step to grooming Step 1. Before you start it can help relax your dog by taking them on a walk so they are tiered. Gather all the necessary equipment needed, which is (for a general groom): 1) Dog/Baby shampoo (don't use the same shampoo as …

reno had a bad hind leg a while ago. we rested it as per instructions from the vets, who at the time felt that x rays werent necessary, and it seemed to heal, anyhow, hes been limping again so we went to the vets last night and they think its his hip, so having x rays on friday. they said that he has some muscle loss on that leg so he hasn't been using it fully for some time. hes on glucosamine and green lipped mussel but can you get anything for muscles? i know physio will help and if they suggest it we have a centre that has a hydrotherepy pool, but was wondering if there was any supplements that would help. thanks

Do you have an emergency first aid kit for your Sibe? What's in it? I have water and dog food (for three days), Bo's medications, bandages of various types and sizes, tape, peroxide, antibiotic ointment, a muzzle, lead, spare harness/collar, scissors, thermometer, rope, phone numbers of my vet and those of friends out of the area who've agreed to care for him if needed and copies of Bo's rabies certificate. You may wonder why I ask....This past May, the town I work in (eight miles from my home) was devastated by a tornado. Over 300 homes and 25 businesses were destroyed in seconds. My family and I (along with hundreds of others) immediately went to …

What is your criteria when chosing your vet? I took into consideration a referral by someone who's opinion I respect along with the following considerations: You also need to ask around and VISIT to know which one is right. Also, emergency hours practices are very good to know in advance. I would take the opportunity to visit (with pet or pets in hand) before I committed. If you CAN'T visit the clinic with your pet...and see how the vet(s), tech(s) and reception interact with your pet, that says a lot. I knew immediately after I visited with the local vet's office with my furry family....it was clean, we were welcomed, got the tour of the…

"Absurd" new guidelines advise pet owners against allowing dogs to beg at the table  Chocolate, raisins or grapes are "poisonous" for pets, according to the code, while a dog should not be disturbed when eating as this can cause "food-related aggression". It also recommends that dogs should not be fed at the table as this can lead to begging - and that "curious" animals such as cats should be kept away from windows or tumble dryers. The new codes of practice for owners of dogs, cats and horses, just released for consultation, are part of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to prevent cruelty. The guidance says that breaching the three codes will no…

For those of you who have shredders at home, please read this article - be warned, some of the pictures are not particulary pleasant. I know this relates to a different breed but I have also heard about dogs getting their tongues caught in a shredder as well. Please unplug them when you're not using them! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1081236/Pictured-Rascal-spaniel-got-close-paper-shredder.html

My family brought me home cradled in their arms. They cuddled me and smiled at me and said I was full of charm. They played with me and laughed with me and showered me with toys. I sure do love my family, especially the girls and boys. The children loved to feed me, they gave me special treats. They even let me sleep with them - all snuggled in the sheets. I used to go for walks, often several times a day. They even fought to hold the leash, I'm very proud to say. These are the things I'll not forget - a cherished memory. I now live in the shelter-without my family. They used to laugh and praise me when I played with that …

I was born today. One of 10. My daddy was very famous. I have lots of half brothers and sisters. My mother is very famous. Since she got famous, she has only had puppies. No more loving hands, no more fun trips... just puppies. She is always sad when they leave her. I left home today. I didn't want to go, so I hid behind my mama and my three littermates that were left. I didn't like you. But one day they said I would be famous. I wonder; is famous the same as fun and good times? So you picked me up and carried me away, even though you were concerned about me hiding from you. I don't think you liked me. My new home is far away. I am scared and afraid.…

Awwww, my Kimba's not well.......he started turning yesterday afternoon and noticed somthing was really off when he didn't touch his tea. This morning when i got up, he didn't come bouncing out of his cage to greet me like he normally does, he just sauntered out and looked so sad I came home at dinner today and he was just the same, totally off his food, until i cooked him a chicken breast, that lasted seconds! But still wouldn't touch his food. I took him to the vets tonight after work, he's got a temp so they gave him some antibiotics and anti inflamatories with a painkiller and i have to go back with him tomorrow if he's no better. Have never done this one 1 large can of your favourite premium dog food 1 cup of flour - you may need to add a bit more as the moisture content varies from can to can 1 egg 1 clove of crushed garlic [optional] Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all the ingredients together until you have a consistent somewhat sticky dough. Spread out to desired thickness on a TEFLON baking sheet. Bake for 45 mins for chewy biscuits or Bake for 1 hour for crunchy biscuits. Cut into desired shapes or strips and cool on a paper towel. Refridgerate unused potion. Make several batches at once and freeze the remainder for convenience later

Never made these All you need is : 8 ounces sausage-meat, 8 oz .plain wholemeal flour, 2-3 oz of stock or water (Irene uses a Knorr beef stock cube) and some garlic granules. Put your oven to 180C/350f, mix the sausage-meat, flour and garlic granules thoroughly and bind with the stock or water to make a very stiff dough. Either roll out on a floured surface to inch thickness and cut into bone shapes or any shape you want. A quicker way is just to roll into 1 inch sausages and squeeze the end to make mini bones. Keep using all the trimmings until all the dough is used. Put onto un-greased sheets and bake for 30-50 minutes (depending on si…

Zak will do anything for this : 8ozs Liver [preferably Lambs] 4ozs S/R Flour 2 Eggs 2 Cloves Garlic/ or 2 tsps garlic puree. Put all the ingredients into a blender until the mixture is smooth, pink and runny [not too rigid a requirement if you prefer to make it a bit chunky' Pour into greased swiss roll type baking tin and place in the oven [Gas Mark 4] for around 30-40 minutes. Leave to cool and cut into bite size pieces. It can be frozen into individual bags [enough for a show] and makes enough for 4/5 shows. stacy x

This is bound to be a very controversial procedure; a Prof. Lee Sweeney of the University of Pennsylvania has pioneered and is preparing to market a type of dog gene therapy whereby dogs would be injected with substances that switch off the genes that regulate their muscle growth in an effort to stave off the aging process in dogs and regulate their muscle growth. He is hoping to begin the "era of genetic enhancement" within the next year: "He said: "We are now in the final stages of getting all the approvals to offer this through the veterinary hospital as a treatment to try to improve strength in pet dogs. "As the dogs get weak their owners get upset tha…
