I used a head collar to train mine but it did take 3 years for the penny to drop so patience is needed. -

He certainly tries can sense a squirrel from yards away and has tried to go up a tree after one.

I have best of both worlds, the husky who likes the occasional cuddle (usually bedtime!!!) And the lapdog who rarely lies anywhere but on one of us.

We don't live near you but I found my boys were fine when kennelled for a weekend. They are both rescues from dogs trust and Solo was happy there as well. Phone a few in your area and arrange a visit, you can tell a lot. We were lucky that where we chose bred malamutes so familiar with sled breeds (she was also hoping we would not go get him cuz he charmed her lol).
