Hello everyone! I just joined the forums today. My husband and I have had our husky puppy for 4 weeks now and he's 11weeks old! his name is Pongo and he's a goofy dog. :P I joined because I'd like to talk to others who have experience with huskies.

I have a couple questions already about some things that he's been doing if anyone is willing to answer:

1. How to I get him used to warm weather? He puts up a temper-tantrum when I try to take him outside to do his business when the sun is out. It's not really that warm out either since I live in Ohio.

2. Any suggestions on getting along with cats

Thanks! It's great to meet everyone!

Hiya, Firstly Welcome to the site, i do hope you find it helpful!!!!

- Warm wheather, he will get used to it in time,. nothing you can really do, giving attention to a tantrum will only woresen the situation. If your out and about carry water with you to not only give him a drink but to spray him with some to cool him down. A kids paddling pool can offer a nice cool place to lie and play in.

- Im affraid unless you have a cat to socialise him with, this may be rather testing. As i have no cats and my two look at cats as pray i cannot help - soz, but there are members on here who have sibes and cats so i hope you get some advice.

Anyway, enjoy and do post some pics of your lovely boy

1 pick him up and put him outside, your the boss not him let him know that

2 cats, leave them 2 it, he will probably try to play with them. they will swipe him across the nose. after a few swipes he will get the message. best to do it now while he is younger.

we have 5 cats and 2 huskies, they ignore each other so no problems

Hiya, welcome to the forum

I agree with the above 1) show him who's boss but have a pool there where he knows he can go to cool down, 2) definately introduce him to cats while he's young or they will be seen as prey as he grows older, but I'd stay with them until you are confident of both animals, like David & Steve (sonic sibe) are with theirs

look forward to seeing loads of pics & watching him grow up around here

Hello welcome to the pack :)

Heat Tolerance:

One thing to get very straight is NEVER shave/clip a huskies coat as it is very likely not to grow back properly. Do you have a solid paddling pool that you could fill with water for him to play in. Or maybe turn it into a sandpit for him, especially if he loves to dig ;)

You want to avoid strenuous exercise with him when its hot and avoid things like running or long distance walks (as a puppy running and long walks should be kept to bare minimum anyway) and only take him for a few short gentle walks during the cooler parts of the day.

Ignore his tantrums. Sibes are very good at training you to get their own way and it will be upto you to show them you wont give in and if you want him outside, he must go outside, if you say its dinner time its dinner time not play time, etc etc.

As for sibes and cats, I cant help you as I only have my boys with no cats as partner is not a fan of cats.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I do have 3 cats right now and he chases them a lot. He doesn't seem to be aggressive towards them. He does get mad at them for running up high or popping him on the nose (they're declawed) and barks/yowls at them (hilarious):D Hopefully since he's growing up with them he'll learn to love them and vice versa. He definitely knows which one runs that's for sure!

sometimes he'll creep up slowly behind them too, I'm not sure if this is predatory or he just doesn't want them to run while he gets a good sniff in. Thanks for the help!

I posted more pics in the member gallery. I've been trying to take as many pics as I can so I can see him grow every week. he's already at 12 lbs!!!:corkysm21:

Welcome to the forum.

As far as keeping him cool, as others have suggested, a pool is a wonderful thing for them. I've also seen huskies who prefer to run through or play in a lawn/garden sprinkler. We have a mister for Bo (like those you purchase for hummingbirds to fly through - it keeps him cool without soaking him -- he's never been one to "muss up" his fur by getting to wet. He thinks he's much to pretty to do that! LOL)

We got a cat when Bo was about eight. They get along quite well. We watched them carefully and introduced them slowly. While they aren't best friends, they often sleep on the sofa near each other. Kat still has his claws, so was able to defend himself (in fact, quite often chases our 86 pound lab/rottie mix around the house) But he and Bo live together without any incidents.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello there :)

I just thought I'd have a quick say about cats lol I do not have much experience with huskies but I would say the best thing to do is to leave them to it - it will just take time for each of them to adjust to each other. You shouldn't leave them alone together or that may be asking for trouble (In my case for the fear of my pup getting hurt by my 15 yr old cat lol). It also depends on whether you already have the cat or whether you are getting one.

Ive had my pup for three weeks now and the cat has only just started adapting to everything and showing everyone exactly who the boss is (once she realised the puppy wasn't going anywhere ha). It can take quite a while!

Good luck with it all and all the best for you and your husky. :D
