Sqwidge
We took Eika as well. We did the 'puppy parties' at the vets, these were free - has resulted in her LOVING going to the vets as her first memories are happy ones! Then i paid £90 per course for Beginner and Novice (altho had to pay a further £45 as she came into season half way through the Novice so had to start again!) We would have done the graduate course but the dates didn't suit us as it was back into our basketball season again. I am thinking about doing maybe the Novice again, unless she is still well enough behaved to do the graduate. When we move we will have a flat garden (where we are currently it's all bumpy lumpy) so i can train her better so i won't keep falling out my chair! So i will start her training up again and then she should be good for Graduate by the summer! Sorry that was a bit long-winded...i think they are a worthwile investment! We have become a lot lazier with her training since we've not been going as you don't have that feeling of someone 'checking' up on you, but like i said i'm determined to make her a well behaved pooch! Tamz
fanks guys....im glad i asked your opinions now...did feel abit of a failure enquiring about it in the first place but after reading your comments it seems stupid not to go ahead so i will book him in asap Tami x x
Sarah
Your so not a failure for wanting to educate yourself and your pup I took both my boys to puppy classes and learnt so much.. I found it's more about the trainer teaching YOU things than the dog. It's a lot of fun and really helps you bond even further with your pup Good luck - it's really a lot of fun and something that you will get so much back from - keep us posted on how you get on
SarahNukka&Shadow
Yep thats exactly what it is Sarah! And Tami, just a tip when you take him... so many people get dishearted coz the trainer will do somthing with your dog and they'll do it perfect and then you try to get your dog to do it and they wont.... dont get discoraged and stop going, just train harder and it will be soooo much more rewarding when they do it for you! I took my girl and I'm really glad I did, alot of the stuff was stuff I'd read and started already but it gave me the confidence to do it and try a slightly different way if it didnt work first time instead of just giving up!! Sqwidge
oh and also don't get put off/have a go at the instructor for going on about letting your dog off lead, just go along with it etc etc... ours just banged on about it, but i didn't listen, we let her off there as it was an enclosed environment, and it's good to work on recall for emergencies. But one of the people who were there who also had a husky listened and let them off...needless to say they ran off, and luckily went straight to their vets (why it chose the vets...no one knows!) I had warned them, and asked them to join here, but i don't think they did.
Sarah16
Im afraid im on the other side of the fence. We had a bad experience with the puppy training class, the teacher was crap and knew nothing about huskies. She was adament it was our training and lack of recall which meant we couldn't let him off the lead and didn't teach us anything we didn't already know or had researched ourselves. The only good thing I found was the puppy socialising side of it, but this was only for about 2 minutes at the end of the session. Loki was an complete angel in the classes, did everything wanted of him straight away and first time, which meant he got bored as she would be helping everyone else. (Although ask him to do the stuff at home and he wouldn't) I didn't take my next two puppies and I really don't think they missed out. As Nix said we were limited to classes and so there weren't any others to go to. When I get anymore pups I would put the money to better use at a good socialisation club or something similar. Sarah
It's good to hear a different take on it I think researching the trainer before hand is definetly a good idea, although harder as if like you say your very limited on centers near by We had a bad experience with the puppy training class, the teacher was crap and knew nothing about huskies. She was adament it was our training and lack of recall which meant we couldn't let him off the lead and didn't teach us anything we didn't already know or had researched ourselves. Can't believe how narrow minded some people can be when it comes to things like that. At least you had common sense to do things your way

lynnmw1208
I guess it depends on the trainer and how much they know about the breed. Ours was wonderful and new more than most. I would definitely take our next dog to classes.
Kells xx
there arent any decent dog trainers near us. i have been looking as i want to take koda to a class
SarahNukka&Shadow
Mine came very highly recomended by several people I know and also has a really long waiting list so that speaks for itself they really knew their stuff and knew that huskies cant go off lead so didnt push it but did say to continue to try training recall for emergencies so I was really pleased with them.. I think thats the thing to look out for recomendations and wait lists.
