SINGING sensation Gamu Nhengu is on the brink of a dramatic return to The X Factor, thanks to some fans in very high places.

The African singer’s career looked doomed when Cheryl Cole outraged viewers by ditching her at the weekend.

Producers feared Gamu, 18, was a risky bet because she faces deportation after her student visa expired.

But her story touched the nation and triggered an angry backlash.

Nearly 150,000 fans signed up to a Facebook campaign to get the plucky 18-year-old with a perfect voice reinstated.

And Twitter was clogged with angry messages slating Cheryl for putting through quirky Cher Lloyd, 17, and Katie

Waissel, 24, despite them both fluffing their auditions.

But thanks to David Cameron’s interest in the show, Gamu could be gifted a lifeline – and what many see as a big mistake can be fixed.

The Prime Minister revealed on ITV1 show This Morning that The X Factor was a favourite in his household, and that he preferred it to BBC rival Strictly Come Dancing.

He said he always tunes in and, like millions of viewers, gets swept up in the thrilling climax to each series.

Home Secretary Theresa May’s officials got wind of the PM’s comments and Gamu is now close to having her visa renewed, leaving her clear to star again on the hit show.

Zimbabwe-born Gamu has lived in Tillicoultry, near Stirling, with mum Nokutula and brothers Milton, 12, and Marty, 10, for eight years.

Her visa ran out in August and there were doubts her paperwork would be completed in time for the live finals.

Gamu, whose mum is now a qualified nurse, was only granted leave to extend her stay under the Fresh Talent

scheme.

Campaigners calling for her return say Cheryl was advised to drop her because of the deportation threat, although a show spokeswoman insisted last night: “Gamu’s visa being processed was not the reason that she didn’t make the final 12.â€Â

Luckily, The X Factor producers are planning a “surprise†this weekend that will allow each judge to bring back one reject on a wild card.

Even if Gamu misses out on a second chance, there are rumours Simon Cowell, 50, is planning to spice up the series by bringing back another contestant later on. A source said: “Knowing the Home Secretary is following the

case is bound to make sure it receives proper attention.

“It now seems routine that Gamu will get the visa.

“She has a lot to thank the Prime Minister for. Had he not revealed he was a big X Factor fan, this probably would not be happening for her.â€Â

A UK Border Agency spokesman said last night: “The family have submitted applications to remain in the UK and

have provided their biometric details. Their visa applications are currently being considered in line with our

published guidance.â€Â

There is no suggestion the Home Office has broken any rules or tried to fast-track Gamu’s application.

Last night Gamu told the Daily Star: “Thank you so much to everyone. I’m overwhelmed by the support.

“The whole experience has been amazing and I’m doing fine.â€Â

Meanwhile, X Factor star Stacey Solomon joined in the chorus of support for Gamu. The 21-year-old Essex girl said:

“I think she should get a second chance. Everyone thinks it.

“Everyone loves her, she was brilliant. But we’ll see what happens.

“I don’t want to say too much, because apparently there’s a big twist. Who knows what will happen?â€Â

Bookies were last night making Gamu the firm favourite to win the show, with Ladbrokes giving the teen odds of 4-1 to go all the way.
