The retailer did not identify who it was talking to, but the Times reported it was considering a sale to turnaround specialists Hilco for a nominal 1. The chain has suffered as the economic slowdown has hit consumer spending. In August it rejected a takeover bid for its 815 stores from a group headed by the founder of the Iceland frozen food chain, Malcolm Walker. Woolworths shares have fallen 83% over the past year and in September it suspe…

Missing schoolgirl Shannon Matthews had been drugged and tethered in the flat where she was found, a court has heard. Shannon's mother, Karen Matthews, and Michael Donovan are on trial over the nine-year-old's disappearance in West Yorkshire in February this year. They deny kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice. Leeds Crown Court heard the plan had been for Mr Donovan to eventually release Shannon and "find" her in a local market and claim reward money. Prosecutor Julian Goose, QC, said officers who found the youngster also found a set of written rules restricting her movements in the flat. M…

More than 3,500 fans have signed an online petition for White to be reinstated or get a record deal. Culture Secretary Andy Burnham even raised the issue in Parliament, saying White's exit had been "very harsh". His remarks came during Commons question time, as part of a discussion about the crude comments made by Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross on BBC Radio 2. …

Debbie Purdy, 45, from Bradford, is considering going to a Swiss clinic to end her life, but fears her husband may be charged on his return to the UK. Police have started searching for a woman reportedly seen naked and tied up near a Hampshire railway station. A man in camouflage clothing was standing next to her, said a couple driving past Micheldever station. They called police who began searching for the pair and a third man seen nearby at 1500 GMT. Det Insp David Collings said it could have been a prank or "some misdirected leisure activity" and appealed for the woman to contact them. He added: "It was very much an open site and we need to make sure this woman is safe and there is nothing more sinister behind it." Mr Collings urged the woman or the men to come f…

The 21-year-old lost a sing-off against Ruth Lorenzo with a performance of Somewhere Over The Rainbow on the Mariah Carey-themed show. Judges Dannii Minogue, Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell all chose to save Lorenzo, with White's mentor Cheryl Cole the only one to vote to keep her in. Earlier this week, Minogue tipped White, from Atherton in Lancashire, to win this year's singing competition. Before giving his verdict to White and Lorenzo, Cowell said: "First of all you were not the worst two singers tonight so I don't know what went wrong tonight, it was a joke. "Both of you sang your hearts out. Whatever I say is going to be unpo…

When officials asked for the Welsh translation of a road sign, they thought the reply was what they needed. Unfortunately, the e-mail response to Swansea council said in Welsh: "I am not in the office at the moment. Please send any work to be translated". So that was what went up under the English version which barred lorries from a road near a supermarket. "When they're proofing signs, they should really use someone who speaks Welsh," said journalist Dylan Iorwerth.
