A member of the cabin crew from a British Airways Mexico City-to-Heathrow flight is in hospital with "flu-like symptoms" after falling ill in mid-trip. The man, who has not been named, has been taken to Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow, north London. A hospital spokesman said: "He has flu-like symptoms and is responding well to treatment." The spokesman added that the hospital was scrupulously following infection control procedures "to ensure there is no risk to any other individual in the hospital." It comes as the UK was placed on health alert following a deadly outbreak of swine influenza in Mexico and the US. The World Health Organisatio…

A US woman had a lucky escape when a burglar's bullet bounced off the metal underwire in her bra. Police in the city of Detroit said one of three intruders fired a shot when the woman looked out of her window and saw them raiding the house next door. The bullet smashed the window and hit her, but instead of causing serious injury - or worse - it was deflected off the wiring in her bra. The unnamed 57-year-old woman was taken to hospital and released the same day. "It did slow the bullet down," said a police spokesman. "She sustained injuries but they're not life-threatening." Teenage gang The woman, w…

UK plunges further into recession UK news World news Further grim news is due with official estimates set to show a further sharp fall in UK output in the first three months of this year. The 1.9 per cent contraction follows a 1.6 per cent slump in the last three months of 2008 - the first time two successive quarters have contracted more than 1 per cent since records began in 1948. The estimated fall in quarter-on-quarter output is the largest decrease since 1979, according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS). The figures come just two days after Chancellor Alistair Darling indicated a 1.6 per cent slump in the quarter …

Following yesterday's news that a stage musical about Jade Goody's life is in the pipeline, I've been racking my tiny little brains to decide who should play the lead role. The show's choreographer Victoria Hayward has come up with a few tips on what they'll be looking for. "Obviously there is nobody else in this world quite like Jade," she says. "But hopefully we'll have a panel of creative experts and people that were close to Jade who'll be able to pick somebody. They have to be able to dance, to sing - because Jade could sing, she had a fabulous voice - and obviously to act, and to have that kind of extra special kind of sparkle that she had." …

A DOG was filmed being beaten and kicked in a sickening attack by a girl aged TWELVE. The schoolgirl was seen kneeing, slapping and stamping on stunned springer spaniel Jasper in the 13-minute film. She whipped him with his lead, then stood on his tail with one leg while kicking him with the other. The girl is seen kicking the pup 14 times, kneeing it 26 times and hitting it with its lead eight times. She slaps it 17 times and stamps on it ten times. Last night Jaspers owner Ray Green, in his 60s, choked back tears after seeing the horrific film. Mr Green, who uses a mobility scooter, had let the girl the daughter of a close pal take…

The American Legacy Foundation® is challenging pet owners to quit smoking for their pets during the month of April, which kicks off Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. A growing body of research shows there are no safe levels of exposure to secondhand smoke for humans or for animals. And one new study shows that nearly 30 percent of pet owners live with at least one smoker a number far too high given the consequences of exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS). Healton, DrPH, President and CEO of the American Legacy Foundation®, the national independent public health foundation dedicated to keeping …
