Jet-setting German dog owners who can't bear to be separated from their pets a moment longer than necessary can now use a luxury pet lodging near Munich airport. Sabine Gerteis, a managing director of the "Canis-Resort" that charges 80 euros (72 pounds) a night, said the facility is intended to cater to well-heeled business people who are close to their pets. A special touch -- at extra cost -- is a gate-to-gate service which takes dogs to the airport to greet their owners upon their return. "There's nothing better than when I come back from Hamburg in the evening and my dog is there, waiting for me at the gate with his tail wagging," Gert…

Lawyers in Australia expect the internet social network site Facebook to become a new way of tracking down defendants after a landmark court ruling. The Supreme Court in Australia's capital Canberra has ruled that Facebook is a sufficient way of serving legal documents to defendants who cannot be found. The case surrounded a couple who defaulted on a loan, but who couldn't be found. "We couldn't find the defendants personally after many attempts so we thought we would try and find them on Facebook," lawyer Mark McCormack said. "We did a public search based on the email address we had and the defendants Facebook page appeared." …

Story from Yahoo! News Link - http://uk.news.yahoo.com/22/20081217/tuk-uk-britain-unemployment-fa6b408.html The number of Britons out of work and claiming benefit rose for a tenth consecutive month in November and by the largest amount since March 1991, official data showed on Wednesday. The leap of 75,700 on the month was much more than expected and took the total number on jobless benefit to 1.072 million, surpassing the psychologically-important one million mark for the first time since 2001. The figures confirm anecdotal evidence that the pace of redundancies has accelerated as firms shed workers in the face of tumbling demand, an…

The website for Lapland New Forest at Matchams Leisure Park near Ringwood on the Hampshire-Dorset border, showed pictures of snowy scenes and promised real log cabins, husky dogs and other animals, as well as a "bustling" Christmas market. But some visitors claimed they experienced "disorganised chaos" and complained that once they paid 25 to get inside the park, it was "tacky" with "real log cabins" actually garden sheds and the nativity scene a billboard poster that could only been seen across an expanse of mud. An ice rink was also closed for repairs while the "magical tunnel of light" turned out to be a few lights hung up on a line of trees. …

Administrators are to begin working at Woolworths after its board agreed to call them into the ailing UK retailer. All 815 stores will stay open for now, but 30,000 jobs are at risk after the chain buckled under its 385m debt. Deloitte was last night appointed as administrator to the High Street store and also to Entertainment UK, which supplies DVDs to supermarket groups. Furniture chain MFI is also going into administration after suffering several years of financial trouble. Woolworths' joint venture with BBC Worldwide - publisher 2 Entertain - will not go into administration as it is owned by Woolworths' parent company.…

Dogs are prone to bouts of envy and refuse to play if they are not treated fairly, scientists have found. The animals stopped cooperating with researchers and began to show signs of distress if they were not offered the same tasty rewards given to other dogs, the study showed. Affronted dogs refused to offer their paws when invited to and began scratching and yawning, indicating that their stress levels were rising, the scientists report. The finding suggests that dogs may share the sense of fairness seen in other social animals that engage in cooperative behaviour, such as monkeys. Some scientists believe a sense of justice cou…

A young Chinese woman was left partially deaf following a passionate kiss from her boyfriend. The 20-something from Zhuhai in Guangdong province arrived at hospital having completely lost the hearing in her left ear, said local reports. The incident prompted a series of articles in the local media warning of the dangers of excessive kissing. "While kissing is normally very safe, doctors advise people to proceed with caution," wrote the China Daily. The doctor who treated the girl in hospital was quoted in the paper explaining what had happened. "The kiss reduced the pressure in the mouth, pulled the eardrum out and ca…

Jealousy could be crippling your dog, but hes too proud to say so A DOGS life might be even more difficult than anyone realised. Scientists have found that canines are prone to a raft of complex, unpleasant emotions such as jealousy, pride and envy. They hate to see their owners offering affection to other creatures, especially other dogs, and seem to suffer particularly badly when their owners bring home new boyfriends or girlfriends, perhaps fearing they might be displaced. We are learning that dogs, horses, and perhaps many other species are far more emotionally complex than we ever realised, said Dr Paul Morris, a psychologist at the U…

Wales has become the first country in the UK to publish official guidance to help animal owners take care of their dogs, cats, horses and donkeys. The Welsh Assembly Government's code of practices inform people of their responsibilities as animal owners. Cat owners, for instance, are told that their pets need to eat meat and cannot be turned into vegetarians. Horse owners are warned to keep mares and stallions separate to "prevent aggression and amorous behaviour". Recent RSPCA figures have shown an increase in the number of cruelty investigations in recent years. In 2007 the organisation recorded just under 140,000 i…

Imagine it. Any day now, this is the headline you could be reading. Of course, the alternative headline: The BBC Will Not Continue to Broadcast Crufts is also a possibility - as it stands the BBC is currently in the review process but as we know, Crufts is coming round in March and a decision will need to be reached very soon. So I thought it would be a good opportunity to examine what has changed since Pedigree Dogs Exposed - the documentary which has prompted the BBC to review its status as Crufts broadcaster - was aired. First off we have to examine the reasons why Pedigree Dogs Exposed was so hard hitting. All who…

As the credit crunch bites, Britons may be turning to sex as a cheap way to pass the time, a charity says. A YouGov survey of 2,000 adults found sex was the most popular free activity, ahead of window shopping and gossiping. The Scots were most amorous with 43% choosing sex over other pastimes, compared with 35% in South England. Aids charity the Terrence Higgins Trust, which published the survey, also welcomed recent figures showing an increase in condom sales. Around one in 10 respondents to the survey, carried in November, said their favourite free activity was window shopping and 6% chose going to a museum as the cheapest wa…

Reading, chatting and texting are among the favourite activities of Britons on the toilet, according to a survey. The study suggests more than 14 million people in the UK read newspapers, books and magazines on the loo. The poll points to eight million people talking - either on the phone or to family - and one in five send texts. The survey of more than 2,000 people was commissioned by charity Tearfund for World Toilet Day, which aims to highlight poor sanitary conditions. The study also suggested people mostly thought about food while on the toilet, and that men were more likely than women to look around for a distraction. …

NEW YORK: A banker who was accused of stomping and beating his landlord's Boston terrier to death pleaded guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor animal cruelty charges. We never had Noel Gallagher down as a Bond figure, but he scared the Living Daylights out of a gang of wannabe dognappers. The Oasis star stepped in when he saw the lads, who wore hoodies, trying to steal a black labrador belonging to a former Bond Girl. Noel gave them a right ear-bashing and threatened to take them all on leaving them shaken and stirred. Give the man a Dog Licence to Kill! Noel, 41, was near his s2.5million mansion in central London when he saw the youths trying to nab a dog tied up outside a supermarket. Having seen the pedigree pooch going walkies with owner Caroline Munro, 58 buxom star of The Spy Who Loved …
