Nicola Hardy, from the West Midlands, has experienced trouble with an out-of-control dog who has been given free rein.

Nicola explains: “Blaze is a two-year-old Siberian Husky. He had a few bad experiences as a puppy, and since then he is fearful of other dogs. Now, when I see another dog I shorten his lead and try to keep him focused and calm when passing by. He has been great when slowly introduced to other dogs – when they are all on their leads.

“However, we have had a few run-ins with a black Labrador (Lab), which has either escaped the garden or the owners have let him off the lead. When he approaches us, he runs right at us and circles us.

“Luckily, it is a friendly dog, but when your dog has been attacked it makes no difference – Blaze still feels threatened. We have had problems with the same dog four or five times.

“The Lab’s owner has no control over her dog when he’s off the lead; she tries running away from him to get him to follow her or stands there calling his name – she’s even tried chasing after him. It takes her a good 15 to 20 minutes to manage to grab her dog. I have tried talking to her and explained numerous times that Blaze is not good with off-lead dogs due to his experiences as a pup, but to no avail.

“I am always on the look-out for dogs off the lead, so I can reel Blaze in and try to avoid them. I no longer enjoy walking him as much as I did – I’m constantly on edge in case we come across any off-lead dogs.

On one occasion, when the black Lab was harassing Blaze, my dog snapped at the Lab. Luckily, he didn’t break the dog’s skin, he just pinched him. The Lab still kept running at Blaze though, and I had to grab his harness and hold Blaze up to keep him from trying to get to the dog.

“Despite this, I am trying to be proactive and I’ve been going to www.husky-owners.com meet-ups to try to socialise Blaze with other dogs and help him overcome his fear.â€Â

Great article Nix :D Are you finding pulling the leash in works for you? I found Aska was picking up on it when I did that, and becoming more alert and tense because I was becoming more alert and tense.Once I kept just holding it loose, and thinking "Hairy men playing beach volleyball in mankini's, Hairy men playing beach volleyball in mankini's, Hairy men playing beach volleyball in mankini's, Hairy men playing beach volleyball in mankini's.." ad nauseam and walked by, she did too.In saying that, I never had the bad experience as a pup that you and Blaze had, so it may be an entirely different kettle of fish, plus, every dog is different :D

i find it easier for me yes cuz i have better control over him then as i can give him a tug on the collar which redirects some of the attention, its sooooooo much worse when bings is with us for sum reason tho lol, bings likes other dogs but will bark and pull to get to them which winds Blaze up but once i get him walking properly and focused by giving him a tug on the lead he calms down, bingo is just a pain lol

At Last!!!! I have found a copy - Sainsburys = No, Asda = No, Tesco = No, haven't been able to get to town to WH Smiths but today I went to Pets at Home for some Hamster bedding and they had some - the assistant told me that they had only arrived in this morning. I was so pleased to find one, I was gabbling away telling her I knew someone in it - she probably thought I was a crazy person :lol::lol::lol::lol: and very glad to see me leave!!!
