Getting a pet rat :)

Recommended Posts

i've had loads of pet rats over the years, had 3 females that had about 36 babies between them once, owned about 8 rats at once when i lived in derby, owned 6 rats at once here a few years ago. so now i think im going to get another one, they make great pets. Almost like little dogs if you bond with them, i.e - come when called, lick you etc, generally just sweet little animals.

Had one called Lulu a few years back, and she was amazing, so sweet, loved me more than her own babies, so was a bad mother, but she was so people orientated. I'm looking for another Lulu, she was Agouti with Dumbo ears. XXX

anybody know much about rats, or had them before?

anybody know any breeders near me?

i know pets at home rats can be lovely (Lulu was from pets at home), but i always prefer to get a pedegree rat as they breed out health problems and they are generally healthier and larger and live longer. X

I ended up getting two baby female dumbo rats, one is Black hooded and one is Russian Blue, i called them Sully and Pepper.

Also got 6 baby mice, which i'm thinking about breeding as a hobby, i have a room dedicated to my pets upstairs which Robert uses as a kind of Art Studio. So i have time, etc.

Heres some photos.

Had a few rats here too..

My first rat Harry - he was lead trained too.. and used to come out with me in the pocket of my then fairly fashionable lumberjack shirt..

Forgot he was in there asleep one day, went to the post office and who popped his head out of the pocket, just as I got to the counter !! boy did the woman scream..

He was a gorgeous hooded rat.. and lived a good ole life.

Very clever and baffled me on how he managed to open an apparently rat proof, sliding lid - till one morning I caught him at it.. Up on his house, grabbed the bars on the door and swung - somehow he'd realised his weight eventually slid it open..

Possibly why I hate the word vermin..

Since then had Bailey and Harvey *both related to the namesake alchaholic drinks* but since they passed I haven't been allowed anymore as my new partner doesn't like their tails.. freaks him out..lol

You have a fab set up.. and more pics definately required :)

I had several while I was a teen. I worked at a pet store and someone dumped a baby rat on me that their snake would not eat. I had to feed the baby rat puppy formula for a few weeks and played "Momma Rat". I named him "Lucky" and he went on to be featured on National Geographic Explorer. The host, Boyd Matson held my "fat rat" on a plate at the beginning of the show. Lucky lived a happy life, passed away a few years later from cancer, as most rats do. He loved to give kisses, he had a huge appetite, and he stayed out of his cage most of the time, laying on the back of our couch. He is missed :(

Your rats are lovely XD And that's a great way to recycle husky hair!

The only thing I would like to ask is that you please do not breed your mice unless you are taking responsibility for rehoming them. I know lots of people that bred them and then gave them or sold them to their local pet stores, and the way they are treated there is not cool. I've seen mice trying to squeeze themselves between sliding pieces of glass trying to get out and suffocating to death from it or being crushed when the doors slide open.

The mice have got new cages, plastic tanks with ventilated lids, they have had 3 babies so far, i don't expect many more as its been a while, i will either keep or rehome any surplus mice, i don't plan on just giving them to a pet shop. I've kept and bred many animals including leopard geckos, rats, guinea pigs etc over the years. I always find good homes, and don't let them go without a caresheet. I feel i've got a high level of experience with most animals having done an Animal Management NVQ3 and Equine Management FdSc.

I used to breed rats for my local zoo........i know i will prob get shot for admitting this but on another note i had 4 as my own pets and loved them as much as my kids......they do make great companians and are highly intellegent thats for sure......If i didnt have cats and dogs now i would have some again but not work the risk with so much prey drive in the house
