Kahtadin hurt himself

Recommended Posts

Poor Kahtadin. We took the dogs to the dog park this morning to tire them out before we had to cook Thanksgiving dinner. They were having a great time, racing around the park and playing. I was watching Haley since she plays rough and can get barkey with the other dogs when she wants them to chase her. Kahtadin was by the water dish and Jay and I were both watching Haley play when we hear Kahtadin yelp. We turn to look at him and another dog he was playing with had knocked him down. He always throws a fit when he's knocked over (he's a drama queen) so Jay went to get him and make sure he was fine. And we realized he was limping - another dog owner said he had been limping before getting knocked over. He mght have turned too fast when running (it's gravel on the ground, so the dogs can slide a bit when running/turning). Or he could have run into something, or landed wrong when jumping onto/off of the agility equipment in the park. We're not sure. He could've hurt it worse getting knocked over as well, we're not sure.

We checked him over in the park, he wasn't crying or fussing or anything. Jay's father was there as well and checked to make sure his leg was ok. Kahtadin stayed by us for the ret of the time in the park, either sitting by us or walking around us. He was limping, but was still trying to walk a bit. he did sniff at other dogs that came near him and attempted to play with a ball and aonther dog, but didn't try running or rough playing like he normally does. He walked all the way to the car when we left the park, jumped into the car.

At home, he still limped, but he did go up and down the stairs to go out. He went potty fine, and was eating/drinking like normal. He attempted to play tug with Haley once when they were lying on the rug with a rope toy, but it was while lying down. And it turned into the two of them lying together chewing the rope toy.

From the way he's acting, we think he either pulled something or sprained his leg/foot. Any ideas on what we should do for him? We plan to let him rest and see if he improves, and if he doesn't get better, we'll take him to the vet. We don't plan on walking him tomorrow, and we don't want him rough playing with Haley in case she hurts him on accident. She's been good, sniffing him and mostly leaving him alone. She doesn't act concerned about him (although she threw a fit when he yelped, she's very protective of him). Any ideas?

this happened last week with Myshka, she had a great time running at the dog park, but we noticed later that evening, she was limping (we never actually saw or heard anything at the park, we're only assuming it happened there). we left her quiet for 2 days in the house, no walks or play ball, rope, etc. & she is fine. we only didn't take her to the vet as we could see each day she was limping less & wanting to get up more otherwise, obviously, we would have booked a check up.

I'd watch him for the next day or so, if it doesn't appear to improve or he's not getting up more on it, get a quick check-up booked to investigate.

Good luck :D

Thanks for the responses :)

He was a little stiff getting up this morning, but once he got moving around and went outside he wasn't limping too much. He wanted up on the bed to sit with us, and now he's up on the couch sitting with Jay and Haley.

Haley decided he was ready to play this morning, and he did a little snarl playing with her. But when he had enough, he went back into his crate. She won't follow him in there or try to get him out, so he was able to escape her lol. She sat outside the crate and cried and sulked until Jay picked her up put her on the bed, and wrestled with her. Poor Haley misses her rough housing lol.

We're going to continue watching him today, since he seems better than last night. Just lazy after a long day yesterday, with people over.

Awww he is not happy right now. Jay just took Haley for a walk, while I stayed home to watch Kahtadin so he didn't have to go into his crate and be home by himself. He saw Haley leaving, heard the door lock, and jumped off the couch and limped to the door. And now he's sitting there crying and sulking because he's not going and his mom is gone.

Kaiser has done this a couple of times in the back garden, usually jumping on and off a contrete plynth that is round the side of our house. Usually takes him a couple of days but he gets over it. Think your doing the best thing to be honest, just keep you eye out and if it gets any worse/doesnt seem to be getting any better then go to the vets. Majority of the time though they tend to sort themselves out.
