Sqwidge
Ok Eika will be able to go on her first walk in 2 and a bit weeks, now i know the general rule is 5mins per month...but is that total per day or is it per walk? So would she be able to have 3 x 15mins walks a day...or 3 x 5mins walk a day? Our schedule of walking her will be: 5.30am 12.15pm - max, even when older of 15mins 6.30pm My next question is does she get fed before or after walks? I'm thinking after right? Also for her first walk i don't think we will do the full 15mins, even if thats the allowed time...
raindog
The 5 minutes per month of age rule is based on a total daily walk. Most young pups get plenty of exercise playing, so we tend to use the "outside" walks for socialisation more than exercise. Mick
siberianandy
we take suka on one 10min walk aday which does him fine sometimes 2 walks aday depends how tired he is. we feed him before hoping he will then toilet on his walk. however think its personal choice when u feed
Sqwidge
ok, she's very good about going outside rather than in the house and i would rather not have to pick it up on a walk! Ok thanks Mick...at least that means i don't have to get out the house at 5.30 woo hoo! 5.50 it is then!
Bec
Yep what Mick said Walks at that age for us are much more about general training and socialisation rather than exercise, I worry about over doing it with their joints etc.
siberian_wolf
Mick and Smeagle are correct -the total time is the daily walk time and the first few weeks/months walks are best to be used for leash training and socialsation. I would feed after the walk not before as going out straight after walking can cause twisted stomach. Again, dont feed straight after a walk, leave her for a little while before giving her food so her stomach can settle.
Sarah
I would agree with the others, 15 mins (for example) would be the total for the day. I always feed mine about 10 - 15 mins AFTER a walk so they don't get funny tummies xx
Sqwidge
thanks guys...i just wasn't sure, but sounds like a plan to me! so 5 min walks 3 times a day, if i keep it at 3 times, will get her used to a routine...well fingers crossed anyway! Altho that will mean 5.30 (when she'd older and going for longer) start, even on weekends...hmmm...ah well, josh is up at 6 anyway!
Ice and Cripton
yup, all of the above is correct...well it's what i did anyway, i was told it was 5 mins per month, so at 3 months i could walk her 15 mins, although i was told i could walk her 15 mins at a time for 3 times a day = 35mins a day, including socialising....soo:rolleyes: also my trainer advised working them before a meal, sibe aren't huge eatera, so if they have been exercised they will eat more, some say wait an hour after exercising them before feeding, i do try and wait 30mins to an hour as they usally come in and go straight into their crates for a nap, however if it' just a quick walk round the block im sure you can feed right atfer...i did today:D
Sqwidge
lunchtime is going to have to be a 10 to 15 min wait max as mike would have to get back to work...but then that's only a short walk anyway. Cannot wait to take her out!

That would be a great idea! going for 5 mins 3 times a day will help her get into a routine and will also mean she won't be exercising too much at one time (if that makes sense). The first few walks you do want to keep short and brief so she gets used to it all and I would advise to try and take her somewhere quiet with not too much traffic and relaxing so she can slowly get used to the different scents and sounds she may encounter on a walk. Sqwidge
we live in the middle of nowhere, and luckily no traffic, just the odd tractor! So it will be nice and quiet luckily, and especially at 5.30am! i cannot wait to be able to take her out!
MyMukki
I agree, feed before, might as well get the other chore done at the same time!

That would be good then I couldnt wait to take my 3 out on their first walks either, especially after their last injection and you got that one week to have them going crazy. I would advise to maybe use the time now, before Eika goes for her first walk to help get her used to the lead, around the house. Will make the first walk more pleasent for you if she is already customed to the lead.
Sqwidge
we're taking her to 'early' puppy classes/parties at the vets, where puppies who have had their first vaccine can go and socialise, nice and early before that fear period...and we're doing basic command training, sit, down etc...and she's on a lead the whole time...so she is getting used to it...i'm too much of a big kid as well, and want to give her all the stuff we've bought her at once! lol! One problem we have right now is she keeps hiding under my chair when we're trying to walk along! its her safety spot and just walks under there..slowly trying to stop her doing it! That sounds like fun! :crazydance: Just like me, especially at christmas I wanted to get them everything, lol Hopefully she wont hide underneath when you go for a walk otherwise problems may occur. Im sure she will do great!
Bec
I am terrible when I have a new pup! You just want to get them 1000 different bits and bobs that they will probably never use/be interested in, hehe. I bought Daisy a collar and tag weeks before she even came home And I colour coded all her things (purple collar, tag, bowl etc)
Sqwidge
i know, that's what we're trying to make sure doesn't happen, as i want her to be outgoing and want to look around not just hide under me! we spend a fortune every time we go in our large pet store...so we bought a HUGE bag of food today so we haven't got to go for a while lol! Sqwidge
lol Bec! We had everything ready for her about 2 weeks before she arrived, even a travel crate for when she can come to basketball and my mums house! Altho at the moment she isn't going in her crates...hmm...not sure how to resolve that! I wanted to get pink everything but mike wouldn't allow it! So we got a pink collar, but a black harness and lead! Pink kongs and toys etc...but if mike has to be seen out with her wearing a ton of black we'll be in trouble! Oh its the same when you have a baby as well!!!

We picked him out when he was 2 weeks old and when we went to see him at 3 weeks old we had already bought his collar. As he had blue eyes we bought him a blue rogz collar. It's one of these things that has to be done when you first get a puppy!
MyMukki
Last night, I bought Quinn a very weird toy it looked like a big inflated double X and it squeaked. He loved it and had great fun -until his Mom, Lulu got it and desqueaked it. She hates squeakies and always takes them out -very sad. Sad for me, I could have bought 3 bales of hay for that one toy! Sqwidge
was it made out of tennis ball like material?
siberian_wolf
Oh dear! Not so good. Gizmo used to have a squeaker until Marley and Bandit came along and I had to take it off them as they were trying to eat it!
Bec
Ah yes... Micha is a very skilled de-squeaker. His favourite toy is a Cuz toy, but luckily he loves it even when it doesn't squeak. Any time I get him a squeaky toy, he will sit there and squeak it obsessively until it squeaks no more, LOL!
Sqwidge
Lol...Eika has somehow stopped her chick squeaking...poor thing!
