6 month Husky won't stop biting

Recommended Posts

hi, I'm new to this forum.

I have one Sibe, he's 6 months and we haven't had him for a week yet. He's called Henry.

We've rehomed him and because his last family never disciplined him as a pup, he doesn't know that biting is wrong.

We have tried a few of the methods but none seem to be effective, he just keeps doing it until he gets bored. We've tried giving him a toy, holding his mouth shut, tapping him on the nose. Loudly saying 'No' and yelping and turning away.

We absolutely adore him, but, if we can't solve this issue then we will have to rehome him.

Thank you!

the yelping and stuff does work but it will take a few weeks,

no problem can be solved within a short space of time!!!, huskies take LOTS of effort and commitment

i trained my girl out of it by yelping and then removing her from the area. it took almost a month but she is clear of it now

please give the husky more time.

if not ill take him lol

hi welcome to the pack - well done on taking him in - youve only had him for a week but have already tried so many methods only stick to one method as he will find it easier to understand with blaze we gave him a gentle flick on the nose - but with skyla we used a AHAH noise and then turned away from her - we kept to this 1 method with each pups and they no longer bite - it will take longer than a week and at 6 months old it will take a while as he has been able to get away with it for SO long - but stick to one method stay calm and b patient and he will soon learn :) good luck

one of our foster dogs was 6mths when he came in and my goodness thats all her knew (he was locked in a utility on his own all the time so he did it to occupy himself). Believe me he was persistant! After 6wks he rarely did it.

What worked for us

replacing what he was chewing with an appropriate toy and walked away

he then learnt what he was able to chew and playtime stopped immediatly.

Good luck and be consistant it will take a fair few wks. he very unsettled and needs to learn a load of new rules with his new family.

he seems to like my hand more than any of his toys!

yep i remember that feeling, our foster was exactly the same. 6mths doesnt hurt compared to an 18mth foster i took on who didnt have any training either!! (now that hurts!)

Keep offering a toy and walking away. he will soon learn that play stops if he bites.

Have you tried a kong? I fill mine with homemade stock (stock cubes are too salty) - thats a good way for them to chew. The difficulty is freezing it without the contents running out all of the freezer!

Have a read about bite inhibition pinned on one of the forums - he may well hasnt learnt his yet! it makes interesting reading.

hi and welcome to the pack :)

At 6 months if he's not learnt his bite inhibition maybe he was taken away from mum and litter mates too early - sounds like the previous owners did little to help either :(

Keep it up perseverance and consistency is key :)

Thank you for all the suggestions, however, as much as it breaks my heart, we are rehoming him. My cats simply can't get along with him and one of them hasn't left my room in a number of days. I absolutely adore Henry, but, I love my cats aswell and feel as thought I have to do right by them.

i have only just seen this and was interested in the responses as Dufuss nibbles too-esp on my hand!!!! We're getting him some bones and toys today though as Ozzy has never wanted toys so hoping that will help.......

Am a bit disappointed that in less than a week Henry is being rehomed again.:(

I hope the poor boy finds his forever home xx

Niamh, sorry you have chosen to rehome Henry, having cats & bringing in a husky is always a risky thing, but if brought in as a pup, they usually get put in their place by the cat & can get on OK, although they have to be supervised. I hope his next move will be his forever home, he can then settle & start to learn socialisation, sounds like his first six months he was expected to be quiet & sit doing nothing,

good luck with finding him a new home, whereabouts are you? I know someone poss looking for a pup?

I hate to do it, however, my cats do come first, one is fine. and, if the other acted anything like my cat Joy, we ould keep him in a heartbeat!

Well, the family that originally rehomed him, did so because the mother was scared of him. The boys loved him and so, they want to give him another try.

I know, however, my cats do come first. One of my cats - Joy is fine. The other two - Sweep and Phoebe are petrified and most days refuse to come out of my room. I can't face the risk of one of them running away or being hurt
