Fear anxiety training...

Recommended Posts

Went very well today on his second session!

He went into the trainers petshop this morning (with a huge truck unloading out front!) without any issues!!! :D

Did some more walking around to familiarise him around the neighbourhood and walked past people and dogs. Tsunami did really well! He walked nicely and is starting to relax a bit more :)

The trainer wanted to start training 'sit' at the end (which he does at home!) but he would have nothing to do with it, not even for treats!

Went to the beach afterwards to swim and he was doing great there, even walking closeby people, just ignoring the strangers!

So since we got home about 13:00 he has spent his day sleeping in his crate, not even bothered to get out with the door open! I had to beg him to go potty now before bed! I think he's totally exausted from today so we'll do the homework tomorrow!

Next session on Monday so lots of time to practice over the weekend!

Todays practicing has both of us exausted so far!

Took him for a drive and walked him in a few parking lots, went very well but he's still pretty scared of new places and strange noises...it is getting better everyday!

He went for a nice walk along the beach and swimming to cool off (37°C today) and he was tired after 10 minutes of swimming!

I guess the training is tiring him (and me!) out! He spent the whole afternoon sleeeeeeping while I had errands to do.

Will see how it goes taking him out the yard later tonight when its cooler outside.

He took all the chew toys he could find into his crate and he's staring at them, half asleep! Guess he's going to bed early tonight or he wants to skip homework!

We just made it 3 houses down the road for about 10 times!!! Thankfully the other peoples dogs were all either asleep or quiet, so Tsunami did awesome!!! :D

Now I can't wait for walkies again!!! Hopefully we can walk the street soon and get him used to the other dogs barking, which is still the biggest fear trigger :(

And it tends to be the smaller the breed of dog yapping at him the worse his anxiety gets!

We're off to bed now, or at least he's already in dreamland, running in his sleep! You'd think he'd be too tired for that! LOL Maybe he's dreaming of a nice run at the beach! :D

:omg::wow::Yes:

We made it to the end of the street TWICE!!! B)

Then a Labrador went crazy and almost jumped his fence! I stood on the other side of the road, gave Tsunami his commands and he just started to calm down when the owner popped out of her house and shouted at us! :( so he charged off in the direction of home...

I couldn't walk him in the other direction as two houses from me the people's min doberman pincher X was on the pavement and that little thing bites like it has rabies!

So, no more homework for now and the weather is so nice and rainy for a walk :(

Last evening we just walked a bit in the yard on leash as it was rugby and most of the street was shouting & screaming at their tv sets!

He did well with the noises and was still pretty tired from playing with Smokey earlier (as the vet okayed it after her stitches came out, they are loving the playtime and go bonkers with energy!)

This morning we walked the whole street, both ways! Might have woken up some neighbours a weeeeee bit early on a Sunday morning, but at least no one shouted! :cheeky::rofl:

He did great, only being scared of that labrador again...he even started crying and talking when the lab barked at him! Don't know what he thinks, but hopefully it will get better!

He's exausted and napping on the bed, so I'll give him the day off and do a quick walk in the evening again before his 3rd session tomorrow :D

So Tsunami was way excited this morning for his 3rd session, he even stormed into the petshop looking for his trainer! I think he made a friend! :D

We did a quick walk around and he was so super behaved! At training he walked the field like a boss! Not pulling and not being scared for the sounds coming from everything around us!

We started on 'sit' and thats where we hit a brick wall! :(

See, Tsunami then thought enough was enough and he was done with training! Doesn't matter how you ask or command him, he just stares somewhere in the distance!

I can't believe he can be so stubborn! He sits like a well behaved puppy at home! Will be walking him again later today and try stopping to sit at random...

So the puppy is broken!

We walked the block for the first time this morning and he is beyond exaustion...(after only a few km!)

He did really well too! Was scared at some of the big dogs (Rotties, Boerboels, Labs) but just ignored a JRT and a rat like looking small doggie! But I think it was too much for him, so will rather do shorter walks in the future...since he hasn't had walks in a couple of months (seems unfit) and the training inbetween is obviously tiring him out!

Will give him the rest of the day off, so he can rest for tomorrows training session.

Well its obvious he is secure at home  -  just look at the relaxation in the second picture   :ok:

Yes! I still can't believe how much he's changed with a week's professional training! He's totally not the same dog anymore...he's warming up to people, he wants to go outside now! Obviously he's still scared and have a long way and lots of training to go, but I can see the difference it makes for him!

All the money worth it to see him returning to his happy self again!

Had a rather terrible session today at the trainers...

Got there and Tsunami was so excited to go into the petshop and say hello! The trainer was out with someone else so we had to wait a few minutes for him...enter a young man who looked at the fishes...he approaches Tsunami and I told him to back off and not pet him because he was scared! So instead of listening to me, he grabs the leash from my hands and backs Tsunami into a corner and holds him...Tsunami was so scared he peed himself right there! After I shouted at him the whole time he gets up and just hands me the leash back and walks out the shop...:angry::angry:

So after that Tsunami wasn't feeling like a training session...

The idiotic stupid ******* !    I would have smacked him one straight in his mouth  -  and I am an old woman  -   won't say lady as I am not one  - especially if someone is messing with my animals.

I really hope Tsunami gets over this with no real setback.   Idiots are everywhere  -  those who think they know better than the owners  -  or who just enjoy terrifying dogs.

Yeah well he was way bigger than me and totally pulled the leash from my hand! At that stage the lady who runs the petshop was in the back fetching something...so not really anyone who could have helped me :(

I did mention it to the trainer and he didn't like any of it!

Tsunami did okay with the trainer but was very skittish (obviously startled by the incident!)

Took him to the beach afterwards and he enjoyed a swim. Slept most of the afternoon and just did some halt, sit & stay in the yard. With that he did really great! Will take him for a walk tomorrow morning to see if the idiot caused anymore problems!

I don't know what it is with people, you can have a freaking neon sign on the dog that says 'don't pet' and they would still do exactly that! Maybe I should make a label that says 'I bite people' and see how that goes!

Not such a daft idea  -  we had a notice on our parrots cage when we had the hotel saying  -  stay clear, I look cute, and I will talk to draw you in close ............. then ....... I  BITE !

It kept the sensible people out of reach  -  the idiots got what they deserved   -  no comeback on us because of the clear notice  (although I did offer to bandage them up for a small fee) :P

Would work only a little bit I guess and most would ignore it still...and other people would report you for having a 'dangerous' dog!

Its the same for having one of those warning signs on your fence ;) If someone then enters your premises and your dog bites them you are in a lot of trouble because you knew you a 'dangerous' dog...go figure!

There's no reasoning with stupid I guess...and people wonder why I like dogs more than people...

We've been fairly lucky.  Most of the kids on our walks have asked before petting Cheza.  This is of course after the question of whether or not she is a wolf.

Haha at least I don't get that question Adam! :D

Here they go 'awww a Husky!' And then they want to squeeze the life out of it or pet it...

Normally I wouldn't have minded but it freaks Tsunami out now if someone suddenly reaches towards him! He's getting very good at ignoring people and walking past them if they don't pay attention to him...most people listen when they see he freaks out but some just don't have brains! Most little kids I know don't even like it if total strangers touch or pick them up...

Ill also get.... "I thought husky's were bigger?" Cheza is 40lbs so she is on the smaller side. We can usually count on one of those 2 questions followed by a "She's so pretty".

Wow, that is terrible - how can someone be that stupid? Does anyone at the shop know who he is?

No, unfortunately not, he only came in and looked at their fish...

I'm not going to wait in the petshop anymore... The trainer said in the future I can go through and wait in the back. But still I would like Tsunami to get used to people again, so I don't want to avoid all people...only the idiots!

Took Tsunami for a walk and he did good with the other dogs (behind the fences or gates) and passing a few people...I think he's starting to relax more, he tries to scramble away less when other dogs bark! Got shouted at by a few neighbours again, but hey whats new...

Only real issue now is his obedience training! He's still not relaxed enough to do that anywhere outside of my yard...he does it about 40% of the time at the trainer's place, but mostly with the trainer and not me :(

What can I say he has a great trainer...

Here you can see him actually doing a rare 'sit' on a walk! :D

:wow::wow::wow:

Tsunami did everything on command at the trainer's place this morning!!! He even stayed 20 seconds everytime AND layed down! :D :D :D

It went so super awesome that he can 'try out' to get a certificate tomorrow morning! Which makes ME nervous!!!

Also I have to take him to the group session on Saturday as the trainer wants to work on his socialisation skills with the other dogs & people...

But all in all a humongous change in Tsunami from just 5 sessions with a professional trainer!
