Hiya Clare and welcome to the pack :)

Good luck with your pup -can't wait to see some pictures :D

I would really do as much research as you can before you bring her home. Your breeder should be able to alleviate any fears or concerns you have :) As for taking her out, as Nix (bingsnblaze) has stated, going out is fine but not on the floor. Get to the gym quick to build up your arm muscles lol

If you have any questions / queries, just shout up and someone will always be able to help :)

Look forward to seeing you around :D

Couple of things from me...........

Don't let your puppy outside at all on the floor weather in your backyard or garden Parvo is a transfer disease be it by birds cats dogs your feet anything can transfer it and its just not worth the risk sorry :(

As for carrying him about yeah thats fine but like you say your not gonna do it for long before your arms drop off lol

Why don't you make the most of the time you got its the best time for them to learn while so young train him to sit wait roll over and the like they love it and it can be done in this time :)

Another good thing to do is take them out in the car everyday ( at different times don't let then get used to at pacific time you will regret doing that )

but if there gonna be any problems with car travel its the best time to get rid of them now :)

I agree with Dunc about taking him out in the car. I maintain what I said in the other thread. It is up to you to weigh the risk factor. Like I said in the other threads I take my pups out and about from day one, that time between 8-12 weeks is so crucial for socialization and exposing them to as many new experiences as possible and assigning those experiences with a positive value.

For me the risk of having behaviourial issues due to poor socialization far out ways the risk of disease as you only have such a short window to socialize them before their fear period and by 16 weeks when 80% of their brain is developed. It's up to you to decide what risk to take and what you feel comfortable doing.

Do you not feel that the socialization at this time can be done in the home from human contact Bec ? I don't know about your house but here I feel we could benefit from having a revoling door we have to answer it that much even more so if they know we have a new puppy here, I know its not other dogs but we have a new member on here this week that as lost a dog to Parvo are you really advocating it being worth the risk for a couple of weeks ?

Yes definitely having visitors over can be part of socializing pups but when I have a pup I do so much more than what you could do in the home during that 8-12 week period

Parvo is a awful disease and can be tracked into your house on the bottom of your shoes, and can kill adult dogs who have been fully vaccinated, II would find it near possible to properly quarantine a pup.

I see far more dogs PTS from behavioural issues that come from a lack of socialisation in their critical period or dogs who have issues for life due to poor socilisation than I see dogs die from parvo.

It is up to the individual as to what they are comfortable doing, any knowledgable trainer, behaviorist, working dog trainer or people like myself who raise dogs for competition work will say the same thing. I can only share what I would do and what the latest research about how puppies brains develop tells us. My full post on this subject is in Clare's other thread.

I'm not sure what it is like in the UK but here in Australia we have puppy schools run in sterile areas that take pups from eight weeks. This is another option for people who want to socialize their pups in their critical period.
