when to switch to adult food

Recommended Posts

The food I'm on recommends switching them at 12 months (their puppy food says up to 12 months and their adult food says 1 year +), so Blaze is definately old enough! :P Personally I'd rather switch Kiska at 14-ish months rather than 12, so I'd say Skyla is fine too. You might find it improves their behaviour as they won't be living off of all that extra puppy protein!

What are the calorie differences like, rather than the protien? That's the key difference between puppy and adult food - the puppy food is intended to provide enough energy for their daily needs, and their growth needs. When the growth energy requirements wind down, continuing to feed them puppyfood essentially winds up providing them with more calories than they need, meaning they either need to exercise more, or could develop weight problems.

The difference between adult and puppy food generally isnt that big though, so its not like if you don't switch in time you wind up with a fat blimp dog overnight. It also varies hugely from brand to brand.
