Depressed, Again!

Recommended Posts

Harry has been a bit of a handful of late, he's started mouthing on occasion and I wouldn't exactly call it a growl but he's definately making grumbling noises. He hasn't been like this with me but more with my hubby and sons (who are teenagers). This has been going on since before I went away, so it's not because I left him.

Harry has also become mega antisocial, I mean I only see him when he needs feeding or a walk. He's also not happy unless he has access to my sons bed.

Just before all this started he seemd a lot happier. He appeared to have finally accepted Maiya, would play with both of the other dogs and seemed generally happy. Prior to this he was such a grump.

Well now he seems to have reverted back to his old ways but now he seems a bit unhinged. The weather has been pants so admitedly he's had less exercise but neither have the other two.

At times I wonder if he's happy here and wonder if he'd be happier else where.  I love him so much but he is such a cold hearted husky :(

Just feel like I need to share :(

Bindi does it from time to time..she just wants to be in the garden once good weather starts and if not allowed (raining or stuff) she can put on a grump like no tomorrow...

I wouldn't say he's unhappy. Ok so I can't see him for myself but he really sounds very much like Ice. He prefers to be on his own all the time and from time to time he gets ideas of grandeur and grumbles at you if you disturb him or touch him when he's not in the mood. It's not a serious growl, he just softly grumbles, sighs to himself and walks off in disgust, lol. Sometimes he even starts huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf, lol.

Thanks guys :)  He's just like that Emma, he has these staring wolfy eyes that you just can't fathom. Just now he was sniffing around as we had chicken for dinner, they all were and I just ignored them. He was then laying on the floor and I went over to give him a cuddle, he huffed, got up and walked off only about 2 feet but far enough so I couldn't touch him. When I called him to me in a happy voice he turned his head :(  Bless him, little Snowy came bounding over and lay down for a tummy rub :) At least one of the boys likes me!

I think Ice and Harry are kindred spirits, lol. Your post could have described ice to a tee. Right down to him feeling he has exclusive rights to our bed. He lays up there all day. We used to have issues like him growling and even biting Brooke if she tried to get on the bed. He got banned from the room for a while so now he's not quite so bad. Oddly enough though he never has an issue with Bear. He lets her do anything she wants. Brooke on the other hand Is another story. He won't let her do many things, only time he's nice to her is if she's hurt herself. He'll gently lick her wound then. He's a bit like Jekyll and Hyde, lol.

Sorry to read this Clare, it could be just a seasonal thing? It might be worth having a thyroid test done by a specialist clinic - it is notoriously difficult to detect with normal brood panels. Its just a thought as what you are describing matches some symptoms.

Another thing is to consider is to introduce Turkey into the diet, it has higher levels of the amino acid Tryptophan than other meats which can boost serotonin levels in the brain, thus making for a happier and calmer dog.  You can buy supplements with Tryptophan plus vitamin B for this very use.

Thanks Jase.  I feed my dogs kibble but a few times a week I do add other cooked meat, ie chicken. Funnily enough Harry does get really excited when he has chicken, though probably isn't the same as turkey.

My son took him out running yesterday early morning and he did seem happier for most of the day.  Sadly now my husband and sons have gone away for the weekend, so I'm looking after the dogs on my own (no problem) but means walks will be limited.  I always try to give Harry the longest walk and I'll be in the garden a lot this weekend, so he can be with me out there.

I guess I'll just have to accept he's 'different' and get my cuddles from Snowy and Maiya :)

Chewing bones is said to increase serotonin levels in dogs, not so easy in a multi dog household but something to consider. The tryptophan plus vitamin B supplements can be added to kibble.

But having said that he may be completely happy, but its just his own personality - either way it sounds like you are doing a great job with Harry  :)

Thanks Jase :)

I usually give bones every other week, it can be a challenge particularly as Snowy tends to hide his own and then steals Harrys. Harry likes to savour his bones and treats, I mean if you give him a raw carrot he will lay next to it looking at it and whining at it. He will then hold it in his paws, nuzzle it a few times before licking it. Eventually he will start chewing it.  All of this will take about 10 minutes.  Meanwhile Snowys would have disappeared in seconds and then he will annoy Harry :)  they are like children! They are due a bone (I give them for their teeth) so maybe that will perk him up a bit.

Also not sure if huskies have mood changes when they are blowing their coats. All 3 of mine are shedding at the moment (yes I'm drowning in fluff) but Harrys is the worst, its really severe.

Oh the joys of husky parenting :)

Hi clare,

Well iv only had my husky a week and can already sense they are independent and strong willed. Iv already had grumbles if I stroke him when it's not on his terms! They want to make the rules and so far iv found routine helps.

Maybe if the family sat together andworked out ideas to keep him occupied it would help? Easier said than done but you mustn't give up :) having any animal is a journey and it's not always easy, stick with him and over time things will improve x

Noah spends most the day in the garden sleeping, He likes a short visit to rub his tum but he is quite happy with his solitude.  He on occasion will grumble if you try to bring him in.  I think with the weather being warmer (honest) they tend to be more sleepy and less energetic at some points of the day and more grumpy.

So Hang in there he still wuffs you.

Clare That makes me sad. Hopefully Harry will pull out of it. I've had three other huskies in the past and I've never experienced this, as mine were always very social and happy but as I don't have those anymore and have acquired my two new huskies one is 7 weeks and one is 8 weeks, Koda is very social and they play great together, but Akira has a little different personality, she is very stubborn I'm learning , but is loveable when she wants to be. If you call her most times she wants to ignore you lol. Idk if that will change or not. Maybe she just is going to be more of a loner, idk. But hang in there sister, maybe Harry will turn around. I'm sure he's very happy with you and your family, maybe he's just a little grumpy. Lol :) Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Definitely! Old hair makes them itchy, overheated and so irritable - plus the loss of hair and replacement hair has to be resourced, which is why some dogs can look a little leaner than the loss of coat would suggest

My boy, Luka, had terrible SA when we adopted him 5 years ago - I couldn't leave the room without him crying. Yet, he'd choose to go off on his own and lie in his crate in the next room. And never particularly affectionate. But over the years, and with the other dogs, he's overcome his SA (very, very occasionally it'll re-appear) and he's even become ever so very slightly affectionate - not that I'd accuse him of that to his face or pay overly attention as I'm sure he'd just ignore me again! Yet more recent boy, feral for 6 months, uses every opportunity he gets to be a lapdog! Dogs will be dogs and they are what they are! ;)

Thanks for all of your comments :)

Harry is still blowing his coat and he does look very lean at the moment, almost skinny.

He's been up and down and definately happier when we've been out on the bike, so I'm trying to do that with him as much as my arm allows. He's an intelligent boy and definately needs stimulation and new surroundings.

It's never a dull moment in my house :)

This condition can appear absolutely in everyone and may depend on many factors. For me, this is also relevant, although I did not think that it could affect me. But lately I have been worried about anxiety disorders. But I found a source that can help me with this and I hope to cope with this  https://us.calmerry.com/anxiety-therapy/ After all, it is important to seek help at the first sign.
