Really?!!! Sooo they are not huskies then?!

Why husky race dogs that are not huskies

If a race is put on by a Siberian Husky group often it is a Sibe-only race. Often however races are sanctioned by groups such as International Sled Dog Racing Association (ISDRA) or for around my area Ontarion Federation of Sleddog Sports (OFSS). These races allow ANY dog (purebred or not) to compete but then often divide the winnings between purebred teams and mixbreed teams. A purebred team does not have to be of Siberian Huskies, it can be any breed so long as all team members are of that same breed and registered. There is a team of Belgian Malinois in the area that does fairly well and a team of Border Collies who are quite the competitors as well.

The thing about Alaskan Huskies is that they have an unlimited option to breed, anything goes. This way not only is the gene pool highly diverse (which has many health benefits) but also they have for more options to add speed and endurance without attempting to stick to a set "type" like purebreds must.

A friend of mine has an Alaskan Husky who's pedigree has been recorded carefully and she has at least 15 different breeds in her! The Alaskan Husky is bred for one purpose and only that purpose which allows them to easily excel. Breeders care nothing about their aesthetics so long as they are healthy and pull hard and fast (though they do care about some other details as well such as being good eaters and having hard feet but that is a part of breeding for a good sleddog anyways).

Some breeds commonly seen in racing Alaskan Husky projects are:

Greyhound

Pointer

Saluki

Borzoi

Siberian Husky

Border Collie

Gordon Setter

Coonhound

Lab (houndy field-type)

German Shorthaired Pointer

Breeds commonly used in freighting Alaskan Husky projects (such as the Denali Park dogs in the video and by trappers) are:

Alaskan Malamute

Greenland Dog

Canadian Inuit Dog

Siberian Husky

Wolf

Yukon Husky
