Gra
Sky had her first injection on Feb 17th, due for the second on Mar 9th, which is normal at 12 weeks. My dilemma is we have a GSD who needs to go out twice a day, I know most on here have more than one dog so whats the score. Technically the new pup shouldnt go out until the second injection yet lives with a dog that goes out and does the normal stuff, isnt this defeating the object? Doesnt the GSD bring back whatever the pup could get back into the house? I'm not going to keep the GSD in for another two weeks, so what is the risk, and how have you dealt with this with your dogs. Sky is chomping at the lead to get out in the big wide world, any thoughts? Graham
Bec
Graham IMO it is all about looking at the risk and making a sensible choice. I take my pups out from the day they get home at eight weeks of age, but I do it sensibly and don't take them to areas that strange dogs frequent like the dog park. I carry them around a lot and let them meet lots of people and have lots of new, positive experiences. Puppies go through an ideal socialisation period from 6-12 weeks. This is the best time to interact with and socialise the puppy. Once it is around 12-16 weeks it goes through what is known as its first fear period, and you have to be very careful about how and when you socialise them at this time as any bad experience or thing learned by negative association can stay with them for the rest of their lives. So for me it is about weighing up the two biggest issues - socialisation and possibly exposing them to diseases. I don't want to leave all my socialisation for when the dog is going through its first fear period as this is not an ideal time to have them out and about a lot. I had two other dogs when I bought my last pup home and I just weighed up the risks. I didn't take my pup out to high risk areas like the beach or the dog park but I did take her out and about, as well as making sure my other dog had his daily walk. Parvo is such an awful disease that even if you didn't have another dog, you could bring back the disease on the bottom of your shoes. Hope this helps! sakora
Smeagle, I totally agree with you, I would just keep it to safe Zones, No dog parks, I usually will go visit friends that have dogs, That I also know who have shots and are good with puppy's, or other animals, that way she is still getting out into the world and checking stuff out
BingBlaze n Skyla
i agree with what smeagle and sakora both say just b careful dont take her 2 high risk areas such as dog parks etc. n b careful when ur bk inside check ur dogs paws and ur shoes for anythin u might ov stepped in gross i no but it happens n make sure ur pup stays away from those things if they have got junk on them (if u ni what i mean) i took my other dog out with out blaze n was just very careful 2 make sure we didnt step in anythin n if we did it was shoes off b4 we go in2 house n clean paws as soon as we did then clean the floor where the other dog had been standin n all that i sumtimes took blaze on a walk with us he only got half the walk bing did then we finished off bings walk hope this helps
Jintel
I have the same problem at the moment. I think I'm going to take Suki out with Juno but I'll stick to an empty disused road near me and stay away from the fields and parks for now. Sarah
I was in a similar situation to you Gra. I still took Kimba out but left Kaiser behind. He's only been able to go out since yesterday. Where I live, there are dogs and cats about yes but we also have badgers, foxes etc which can carry diseases so I wouldn't risk taking him out before he was fully vaccinated. siberianandy
gra is your gsd fully vaccinated if so the puppy should be ok to be arround it as this is what a lot off breeders have told me. the others advise is also very good
Gra
Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. The GSD is fully covered and I think the advice given is very sensible, you just here so many different stories and like I said its been a while since Ive had a pup to look after and times change, the internet is a great place but can be very misleading too! Took her for a walk tonight with Blue the GSD, kept to the quiet bits and she was great, does help with Blue being there i'm sure, she watched his every move and she learnt a lot. Thanks again
