Eset
Hello everyone, My name is Mary Ann and I'm new to the forums. I have a 7mth old female named Nala. We have come a long way since I got her at 8weeks old. I've taken her to puppy training and overall it went well. My issue, which really has always been one is the whining and crying to get to people on our walks or coming in and out of my apartment. I've tried it all! short lease, short pulls on the leash...sigh.. i mean everything. Its so bad that she cries so loud that ppl thinking im hurting her.. thats how bad it is. Its like she is in pain! Last night this poor woman got jumped and Nala pulled so hard that i lost control of the leash and i couldnt get her back ...she was all over this woman. Im tired of the looks and the comments of.. your dog needs training.. or your hurting her when all im doing is standing there trying to redirect her. I was in tears last night because I dont know what else to do. Any advice would be appreciated!
BingBlaze n Skyla
welcome to the pack - cnt w8 2 c sum pics ov Nala - not sure if this will work but maybe if u get a treat - something she really likes - abit ov chicken - or a bit ov cheese? so u can redirect ur pups attention? when u see some1 coming 2wards u show ur dog the treat make her sit and keep her sitting and focusing on u untill the person has walked past as the person is walking past give ur dog a command - leave - on by ignore whatever u will remeber the best and when shes done as uve asked give her the treat she will learn jumping up at people isnt a good thing and when she ignores them she gets a treat - good luck i hope ive helped
Sarah
Hi Mary and welcome to the pack I teach the "wait" command to my 2 - i get them into a sit and show them the treat - when they are focussed on me i then let them have the reward, redirecting her attention, could work for you Does she bounce up at you in the home or is it just on walks? How much exercise a day does she get?

How much exercise a day does she get? I've tried the treats..it doesnt work She just wants the person coming towards us. She doesnt jump at home. She is a really good girl at home. I mean she has her moments of hyperness..lol and wants to chew on us.. the play biting which i want to stop but thats coming along. But she does the same thing when ppl come over.. and she does a submissive pee. Thank god i dont have many ppl coming over.lol The only issue i have is the excitement over people we meet on our walks. Its like shes never gets attention! Its the painful crying over the person thats so frustrating. People think she is in pain or im hurting her and thats far from the truth. When she see my daughters school bus.. ugh. You can hear her excitment and crying two blocks away! People are always looking and shaking there head. sigh I took her to the dog park today and i met some really nice people who told me she is just a pup and not to listen to other people. They told me by looking at her is very mild tempered. So, that help me not feel so bad and im just going to keep working on it.. I just wish i knew what else to do. lol
Sarah
How was she socialised as a pup - when you went to puppy classes did they do much "people" contact as well? The trainer I used here in the uk had us all moving around and interacting with different dogs so they got used to strangers coming towards them. Maybe some hardcore heel work could do the trick - like you see in shows, when the dog is 100% focussed on the owner trotting along side? On walks my boys pull like trains lol and so i'm not the best person to ask for hints and tips on how to train to get a good heel walk but if you PM Bec on here, she is really good with things like that

Trainer didnt really say much.. I wasnt really happy because she got stapled as "the husky" the hard to train and oh boy you'll have problems :/ On our walks she wants to pull but i do the stop and walk tip. Until she understands that we are not walking till she walks with me. Overall that works well..takes about a block before she thinks.. damn I cant pull..lol. With people we meet is the same.. as we pass i do a quick pull on the leash with a leave it and she is fine but not always. Some days are worse then others. I make her sit waiting for the elevator and when we get in i put her in the corner once we are in but... once ppl get on with us.. i have to hold her into my chest in the corner sometimes to stop her from going crazy. You know how hard that is in an elevator...rofl
Sarah
sounds like you may need to go back to basics and start all over again, remain calm - when you see someone coming towards you don't think uh oh here we go again, and get worked up - she will pick up on this and react - you end up in a viscous circle then lol maybe have friends and family help you out get them walking past her constantly on a walk and have a high value treat and when she looks at you instead of who's coming towards her - praise and reward. Rule of thumb for using treats with training though - skip the meal before training, that way she will be hungry and more willing (paws crossed) to listen to you
Sid_Wolf
I would try getting a friend to help, or a family member. Have them stand in front of you, in your path (starting at a distance where she doesnt go mad), start walking towards your helper (they stay still for now), and as soon as she goes mad, turn sharply on your heel and walk away in the opposite direction, once she stops crying and stuff turn around and repeat. She'll soon learn that if she acts up, she doesnt get to meet the person, but if she stays calm then she can Once you can walk upto the person work on walking past (teach the leave command 1st)
teamyteamy
I have the same problem with Kavik, when people come into the house he will back away and crawl up to them and have a quick sniff then back away. He might do this for about 5 or 10 mins, then he will go over to them and let them pet him but still be very weary. Out on our walks, thats a different story, when he spots someone even 200 yards away, he's up on the back legs and pulling like a train to get to them and when he does he's trying to jump all over them. He used to do the crying thing too but that has almost stopped, thank God. If the person is walking a dog it's even worse and he'll keep stopping and looking after them untill he cant see them anymore. We were at training too with a really good trainer, he train's guide dog's and assist dogs for the disabled, he is our very own dog whisperer. He said that it's just the pup in him and because seen as he's a Husky it's a sign of his intelligence, wanting to check everyone out, being inquisitive and just thinking everyone is a friend and wants to play. He suggested using training disc's if it was still a problem when he was older. Training disc's should not be used with a pup younger than 8 months. I'm going to give them a try next month. He said using the discs will work, he hasnt seen them fail yet.

Right now I dont have family around to help out. They are umm.. not very supportive of the whole dog thing. /shrug... but i do have a friend coming to visit for the summer and hopefully we can work on this. I like the go mad comment ... cuz that is so how it is! lol

You feel like you are giving the breed a bad name. But he only really screams after cats now, which I don't mind too much. I'm sending on a link about the discs. The trainer said that even the most aggressive dog can be stopped with these. http://www.canineconcepts.co.uk/ccp51/cc/dog-training/dog-training-discs.shtml let me know what you think.
