Ravinder
Hi all, hope you are well. i just had a quick question really, i wanted to take Ice to training classes as he wasnt taken as a pup, and now at 10 months old, although a well behaved dog, i thought it might just give me some more pointers, and hopefully he'll be able to socialise with a few other dogs, however, is it best to go to someone who has worked with huskys previously or would any reputable dog trainer have the knowledge? i'm not trying to undermine anybody here, but around where i live huskys are very rare and a lot of people i speak to when out on walks, have only ever seen them on TV! and i want someone who can understand the intelligence of the breed to work with him, as i don't want anything i've already done to be undone (if you get what i mean) and he's not a thick dog, he's very clever, as all huskys are, and i need someone who understands they only do things when they see theres something for them in it, do you get what i mean? so was wondering what everbodies thoughts are, i live in UK, in Ilford in Essex, so if anyone knows of anyone localy who is good, please let me know
ninooks mum
hi Ravinder nooks was the only husky in her classes as they were rare here in My area too but she learnt a lot from the classes the trainer was a police dog trainer also but like you say they can only teach them so much I took nooks out after she learnt to do the required things pups need then just trained her Myself to recall
Sqwidge
There are about 3 huskies at my school (all in diff classes) and my trainer 'knows' what huskies are about, but has never owned one, iyswim? The classes, in general are more about teaching you how to handle the dog, rather than the dog itself, you will have to take from them what you can and apply it to your husky...i have found them very useful, and would do the next class up, if they hadn't started during basketball season... Sarah
I took my boys to puppy classes and kimba to intermediate basically as Sarah (Sqwidge) says, they train you not the dog - my trainer was a police dog trainer as well and she was extremely knowledgable although hadn't trained many huskies. I stayed until I felt confident in myself to take what I had learnt and apply it with other training ideas They are great for socialisation as well - having said that now - my boys have a better social life than i do!! lol I think if you find a good quality DOG (yeah ok human lol) trainer then you are on a winner - ask to go along to watch a few classes to see what the interaction is like
