Questions on getting our second husky

Kaiya

Recommended Posts

So Kaiya is about 4 months old now, we almost ended up getting one of her littermates, but that fell through on us. Since day one however, we pretty much assumed we were going to end up with two huskies and now we are starting to develop our game plan to do so. Now that we have done/are doing the puppy thing, the second time around we are going to go with a rescued husky and we are looking for some suggestions on the best course of action. So

1) Kaiya is only 4 months old, has gone through beginner training but is still learning. Is it too soon to consider another husky? We will be going with a rescue so we are "hoping" to get one that already has a good base of training.

2) How old of a husky should we be looking for? Meaning should we try to get as close to 4 months as possible? I know that will be tough but stranger things have happened. Or should we be looking for huskies a year or two old or older even?

3) Should we be looking for a male (fixed of course) seeing as Kaiya is a female (soon to be fixed) or do you think two females would be okay together? Do you think it would be dependent on age?

4) Separate crates for sleeping? Kaiya has been crate trained since she moved in with us and I don't know how she would react if she had to share her space at night.

Any other things we should be thinking about? The exercise and activity shouldn't be a problem as we are already pretty active with Kaiya and as far as I know another husky will only add to how active Kaiya is. We also have a 16' x 16' kennel that I built that they can play in; complete with sand box, bathroom area, kiddie pool and dog house. So room to exercise when we can't walk them is available as well. What else am I not thinking about?

1. IMO no, just make sure you socialise them as much as possible

2. Better off with a younger one that can keep up lol

3. male or female, same sex can get on fine,

4. deff separate crates for sleeping, they like sprawling lol

1. No it not to soon to be looking x

2. No i dont think age matters my two are 10 month and 2 month x

3. Any sex will be fine x

4. My 2 shared a crate but Shura soon need her space away from the pup so now the pup sleeps with us. so seperate crates will be nessasary x

Thanks everyone! Kaiya has her appointment to be spayed early next month. I think we will start the search once she has recovered (I think it might be easier to keep her calm during recovery if there is only one). I guess another husky will be a christmas gift between my wife and I. Thanks again!

Has Kaiya had at least 1 season yet?

Personally i think its a little to soon for you to be looking, my trainer warned me about getting another husk when Alaska was only 5 months, they tend to get more attatched to each other and would much rather play than listen to you. Best age to get another dog >> 2, when you and your dog have a bullet proof bond. Im not knocking you getting another sibe tho, we got Balto when Alaska was 5 months (and so was he as their litter-mates) >> but it was really hard, they had to sleep in different rooms, in different crates, go to training seperately, go on seperate walks >> Balto had a few issues which many rescues have, so Alaska would distract his training. I would wait until your sibe is older...just from my experience!

Heya,

I agree with Ice, I would wait till you have an unbreakable bond and her training is well advanced that way training with your next one should go more easily as the new one will have an example to follow as to what you expect.

Also I've been told by my Vet that they wont even look at fixing Nukka till shes 6 months or over, they said after her first season was OK but asfter her second was preffereable otherwise she could get "Stuck" in puppy mode as her hormones wouldnt be fully developed and this would make her more difficult to control and train, so I would look into this more carefully.

Hope this helps.
