Blue-Green Algae

Here's a link to an article that appeared in The Rhinelander Daily News in Wisconsin. Poor guy's dog contacted blue-green algae and was gone within a few hours. Really sad.

The photo Val posted is what it look like. Sometimes, though, it can be submerged below the surface. If the water looks green, or like pea soup, that's a dead giveawy. Problem is, the algae can be present, along with the toxins, and the appearance of the water is near-normal. Scary.

Last year, before the warnings were put up, we noticed our local dam was covered in the 'stuff' but didn't quite know what it was. Myshka darted into the water, as she always does, and we dragged her straight out, she was in it for a second or two, that's all, but must've got a mouthful of the water. She had the runs for 2 days, but the vet said she would be ok, she hadn't drunk too much of it & just to watch her, she never ate for the 2 days either.

The next time we walked her there, there were signs up everywhere warning of the blue-green algae & the dangers it posed to humans & animals.
