Mazz
Here's a link to an article that appeared in The Rhinelander Daily News in Wisconsin. Poor guy's dog contacted blue-green algae and was gone within a few hours. Really sad. http://www.rhinelanderdailynews.com/articles/2009/08/31/news/doc4a9beb8841c26695228769.txt
Damrod
Never heard of that. It appears to be our own fault due to pollution.
persephona
That is sad, especially since there many cases of this happening and nobody bothered to inform people. May I ask a question though? How do the blue-green algae look?
Val (Zebedee)
we had blue-green algae alerts in the UK last year, all the places we walked Myshka that had ponds or lakes all had warning notices everywhere advising not to let your dogs cool off or play in the water this is what it looks like:
Mazz
The photo Val posted is what it look like. Sometimes, though, it can be submerged below the surface. If the water looks green, or like pea soup, that's a dead giveawy. Problem is, the algae can be present, along with the toxins, and the appearance of the water is near-normal. Scary. persephona
I had no idea that this kind of algae can be so dangerous. I assume they can't be found in the sea?
Sarah
no i think it's more in stagnant water

Val (Zebedee)
Last year, before the warnings were put up, we noticed our local dam was covered in the 'stuff' but didn't quite know what it was. Myshka darted into the water, as she always does, and we dragged her straight out, she was in it for a second or two, that's all, but must've got a mouthful of the water. She had the runs for 2 days, but the vet said she would be ok, she hadn't drunk too much of it & just to watch her, she never ate for the 2 days either. The next time we walked her there, there were signs up everywhere warning of the blue-green algae & the dangers it posed to humans & animals.
