holiday complaints

Thats just one of the most ridiculous complaints tour operators have received from irate British holidaymakers in recent years.

Telegraph Travel has complied a list of complaints using research by The Association for British Travel Agents (Abta) and Thomas Cook.

They include one from a tourist at a top African game lodge, who spotted a visibly aroused elephant and complained that the sight of this rampant beast ruined his honeymoon by making him feel inadequate.

One Briton grumbled that the sand at the beach was too white; one was outraged when a 3.50 pair of Ray Ban sunglasses proved to be fake; and yet another was quick to blame his tour operator for not warning him that mosquitoes could, in fact, bite.

Hotels proved to be surprisingly confusing places. One uppity guest protested that his soup was too thick and strong until someone pointed out that he was in fact supping gravy.

But thats nothing compared to the woman who threatened to call the police after claiming that shed been locked in her hotel room by staff. It turned out she had taken the do not disturb sign hanging on her door handle a little too literally.

Among the more xenophobic grievances were that there were too many Spanish people in Spain and that restaurants in India served too much curry.

One envious holidaymaker (with an admirable grasp of geography) couldn't hide his frustration that it took him nine hours to fly back to England from Jamaica when it only took the American travellers a mere three hours to get home.

And complaints have been on the rise. A spokeswoman for Abta said more than 22,000 people made complaints in 2008, up from 19,552 in 2007
