and this is what happens when someone gets a dog- bred to be a guard dog, and doesn't train them properly

FLEMINGTON  Two rottweilers that mauled a woman and her 9-year-old nephew Friday night will be euthanized.

Laura Benedetti, 41, had gone to her fiance's home in Flemington with the boy, Andres Ortiz, to tend to the dogs while her fiance was away. The victims were taken to Shands at the University of Florida with head injuries and underwent surgery Friday night.Marion County Animal Center spokeswoman Elaine DeIorio said Saturday morning that dog owner Scott Monsees has surrendered the animals, Barren and Duke, to the facility and that they will be put down. The dogs are on a hold  a 10-day quarantine  at the center. They also are being held as part of the Sheriff's Office investigation, DeIorio said.

"I won't be able to look at them again," Monsees said of the dogs. He said he got them for protection because he was the victim of a home invasion a few years ago.

Sheriff's deputies and animal control workers said Benedetti and the boy went to the home in the 16900 block of North County Road 329 to give the dogs food and water. After they got out of a vehicle, authorities said, the rottweilers first attacked the boy. When Benedetti tried to protect him, the dogs turned on her as well.

Deputies said Benedetti managed to cradle her nephew in her arms, trying to shield him from being bitten, while trying her best to keep the dogs at arm's length.

Monsees said most of the bite wounds were on their heads.

"I never dreamed something like this would happen," he said.

Having a guard dog or personal protection dog requires so much training and people don't understand that. People think that as long as they encourage barking, growling, and jumping at people it's going to be a good guard dog, but they are normally only setting themselves (or others) up for serious injury or death. People don't understand how important professional training (and a dog with a correct temperament) are, this isn't something that can be accomplished with watching some Youtube videos and buying a book.

Thats awful, for the people and the dogs.

Just one thing though, rotties were never originally bred to be guard dogs, they were herding animals, so these dogs may have been trained to be guard dogs, but they weren't bred to be so. I love rotties and hate the way they're always portrayed as vicious dogs, they're not.

Karen you always say exactly what I was going to! They are no more vicious and guarding than any other badly socialised badly brought up dog! It really makes my blood boil to hear of idiots getting dogs as "protection"!?? Buy a bloody panic alarm not a living creature that your just going to treat badly!
