Coda Posted April 19, 2017 Report Share Posted April 19, 2017 Hi I'm new to this site and hoping to get help for my daughters Husky Coda, She keeps getting the same infection this is the 4th time, Last time 2yrs ago, it involves her feet & mouth biopsy was done last time, and they put it down to change off diet or environmental reasons & or stress !! This time on same antibiotics with a temperature 40.4 her feet have improved then her mouth got infection Coda is very down in pain & not responding to antibiotics the ulcers have spread to her throat with a slight cough panting & heart rate 160 with greenish mucus hanging from her mouth ! Has anyone had similar problems with there husky ??? Any help appreciated I'll try post a picture off her foot from the last infection, Thanks in Advance as she's running out of time & may have to be euthanased ? Coda Posted April 19, 2017 Author Report Share Posted April 19, 2017 No haven't taken her to another vet, As 4 vets work at the clinic, & they're in contact with others and the university, It's $1000 just for biopsy !! Sorry to hear your having trouble with coda , I had an Alaskan malamute/husky. He had abscess after abscess in his paws. Every time we walked him he would suffer a few days after. He would also get very scabby when having a blow out and would also have a scabby mouth and his eyes would weep. It took us a couple of years for us to get him diagnosed and several vets. He was eventually diagnosed with an under active Thyroid and also an Autoimmune disease which in short terms he was allergic to his own hair (crazy being a hairy breed ). He was on a mixture of thyroid medication , when he had and abscess or became scabby we had to introduce steroids and antibiotics and he was antibiotics for about 9 months of the year. It was a constant battle and a costly one however, he always had a quality of life and we didn't give up until this year he was six but the disease then started attacking his joints and muscles and he wasn't happy anymore so we made the sad decision to put him to sleep. I'm not a vet and am not saying this is what coda has, but as Rachael said it's well worth taking her to another vet. [emoji20]I was initially going to ask about autoimmune conditions but read you've ruled those out. Only other thing I can think to ask is has she been swabbed to check which strain of bacteria she's suffering from? Some broad spectrum antibiotics won't always work most effectively to clear things up 100%.Sorry I'm not much help, can't really think of much else to suggest right now [emoji20]Edit: not sure how much use this is but I've heard that over in the states you can get a pet care credit card to help pay off the cost of treatments bit by bit with those vets who are registered with the scheme. Unfortunately where in the country & Perth is 450 kls away to seek a specialist vet & where on a pension so funds are tight ! I have read about thyroid & possible zinc deficiency, along with your suggestions I'll put to the vet, Coda is very clever & knows when tablets are in food which has resulted in injections at the vet every day, Coda has also been started on steroids, it's weird as on 2 occasions this has happened while daughter was pregnant & also away for 3-4 days at a time & both times I had to buy cheaper dog biscuits instead of the black hawk brand which are gluten free, & Coda also has another dog with her all the time hence the vets saying stress & diet & or environmental as biopsy last time came back as dermatological problem, And I can relate to this as I have psoriasis !!! My dog gets hotspot quite often on her front paws. She's lots of long fur between the nails and around pads like huskies' and they have to stay away from dirt and moist otherwise she keeps licking. Another thing that popped in my mind was someone's dog I've heard of has been having problems with a large red patch of scabbed and sore skin spreading across her huskies face. She's tried a lot of different things with varying success. [emoji20]Hopefully the steroids will help you and if they do then that in itself might possibly offer some clues as to what's causing it. However. If you fancy a bit of research, allergies are sometimes looked into with recurrent skin breakouts. I've heard of something called apoquel mentioned to help combat it. Not had personal experience myself though. So can't comment on it. If you end up going down that path with your vet it might be worth asking them. Another treatment that I've heard of for skin wounds is colloidal silver. Might be worth reading up on it and if it's appropriate to this situation asking your vet if it's suitable to try (I don't know if it reacts to other medications or not). Hopefully the answer will be found pretty quickly and you won't need to try a lot of different things. Fingers crossed for you both.
