Sarah
Hi all Noticed Kimba's main pad is dry and cracked - hope you can see on the pic - Kaiser's aren't like this they are smooth and crack free. Any ideas on what I can out on it if anything? they get walked on tarmac only for 10 mins maybe which is the time it takes me to get them to the field. Mazz
Oh Sara, is it painful for Kimba? It does lot look red or swollen in the photo. Did some research on the subject. Here's a few links that had some good information on cracked pads. http://www.xomba.com/how_to_heal_cracked_paw_pads_on_a_dog http://www.collargirl.com/cracked_pads.html http://bestpethomeremedies.com/dogcrackedpawpads.html If Kimba starts to lick or chew on the pad, that will make things worse. I know that lawn chemicals can do that to dog's pads. So I don't apply any to the back yard where Zoya digs and runs. Zoya's pads are rough, but not cracked. Also, Zinc deficiency can cause cracked paws. Good thing you noticed the problem before it became more serious.
siberian_wolf
poor kimba! He's not having a good day today, bless All I can suggest for now is keep it as clean as you can to avoid infections, etc getting in there and also make sure you dont get any stones or dirt trapped in there either. I think, im not completely sure, that you can get a cream or something for cracked paws. Hold on will ga and have a look

Don't use lawn chemicals so i can rule that out, they don't appear to be swollen and he's walking fine and not paying much attention to them with regards to licking / chewing them. poor kimba! Sarah
Thanks Rose added to rep How do you stop them licking it off? Am I best off applying it when he goes in his crate at night so he can't walk if everywhere?
rose
I put it on just before feeding or before going on a walk, just rub it into the pad, you don't need much or you can put a bootie on him if he will keep it on.
siberian_wolf
great tip rose, added to rep Sarah have you bought your boys any booties for when they are running in the harness? Maybe you could put one on kimba's paw so it would act like a bandage.

persephona
I don't think the tarmac is the culprit either - I always walk Kremlin on it and his paws may be a bit rough, but they are not crackled. I think that applying an ointment and see what happens is the best solution. edit: I used for Kremlin's paws Calendula cream.

Sibe77
I know one of the worst causes of cracked paws is from the salt they put on the pavements and roads during icey weather, i always try to avoid walking thru it when i have a dog, it can also become very painfull for the dogs paws, but i doubt that is the cause at this time of year. a good cream to use is called "Bacitracin Zinc Ointment", you should be able to get it from your local chemist......... ade hill
sarah, if it is a zinc deficiency, try him with some fish a couple of times a week to complement the tablets, contains alot of zinc and may help boost him a little, probs a tin of tuna chunks is best. Sorry I know this is straying away from the subjuct but the salt they use on the roads & streets in icey cold weather is also bad for weels of a buggy it burns them. Thats my top tip of the day........

If you have a look on the culpeppers website (also they sell these on Snow Paw Store too) they have a section of products for pad care. There are preventers and treaters, sprays and ointments, waxes and bandages... I'm sure you'll find something that can soothe Kimba's paw and help prevent it happening again Pad care is something I want to ask about after I've got used to the forums a bit more, but those stores seem to have things that can help you with your situation.
