Spaying

Recommended Posts

Ok I am 90% to getting my girlies spayed but I wont to be 100% before I do.

I am calling upon all female doggie owners.

Did your girlie get snappy befor heat and how long before heat was due did she do this.

I know about the pros and cons have read so much but the one thing I am unsure about is my Willow. Over the last few months she has got snappy I have read its there hormones and she has been due to come into heat since July but that was for a six monthly cycle she is now coming onto a 8mth cycle and some signs are there and Akia keeps cleaning her which if it is its going to stop me going to husky camp :( but no bleeding yet.

I keep putting it down to her coming into heat which I am know starting to think perhaps it isnt. So any advice there would be very gratefull.

Also did your girlies change in themself at all after they got spayed for good or bad.

I am so confused as i did read whilst doing research that snappy females can get worse if they get spayed has anyone elase heard this.

That is the 10% that i am not sure on. I do not want her to be nasty to other doggies I can control it at the moment as i see when she stands stiff and looks slightly to the side at the other dog when she is off leash and i see she is unsure I call her and she comes away but if I am standing with other dogs around me talking she will snap.

So Answers on a post card please........lol sorry but i so want to be 100% but scared she has lernt bad habbits and perhaps should not of waited and done it whilst she was little maybe.

Not so much on her first season but her second season (this one just gone) she got very snappy for a good few weeks before she was due, especially with Shadow and other dogs and even with me a couple of times as it really close to her time (think she had belly ache and I touched her in a painful place) she also got much more moody, tired alot, ate less and was much more clingy and cuddley with me. She still hasnt fully recovered yet as she is still alot more lethargic and placid than she was before but Im hopeing this will improve with time.

Im spaying her end of Novemeber as she is regular in her six month cycle, just finnished her second so the vet said three months after she finnished is best so that would be end of Nov. If your girls are irregular you deffinatly want to discuss with your vet when is best to fix her if your going to as fixing too close to a season can cause hormone problems.

Basically I think its just so much less of a health worry to fix them, then if she is still snappy after that you know its not hormones so have a better base to work with her from, and you can start to slowly socialise her with a good knowledge that your progress isnt going to be set back by her having a PMT day! LOL

Thanks peps Willow was ok with her first season still her playfull puppy self 2nd cycle i noticed the moodyness more with other dogs this will be her 3rd so wish i had found this site sooner as i think she would not be having her third. Between the first and second she went 6mths hence why i said she was due in july but i do think this one is taking it out of her. She is less playfull but saying that she has her moments with Akia playing but not with other dogs she does not seem to want to know them rather ignor them than to say hello like normal.

Spoke to vet but think I will be seeking a new one as he was happy to do it now but I thought she was to close to her heat for this he did say if i waited then would have to wait the three months which I did read before. Its so worrying isnt it do you dont you....think I am going to though as i cannot cope with the worry of her having pups so dont want that. And hoping it may make her go back to her happy go lucky self hope I have not left it to long and she has already got into that habit of snapping and feeling unhappy around strange dogs.

Just been reading about the collie heat cycle about there snappy ness mmmmmmmmm even more confused now

Lyra hasn't been spayed yet, but we're getting her spayed at around 6 months. I think vets in the US do it a little differently - it's VERY common practice to have your dog fixed by the time it reaches 6 months of age. I see no reason to wait, as I am not worried about her growth and we are not showing/breeding her.

Well i have booked Akia in as she is smack in between her cycle and temperment is lovly. Willow is half cocking her leg a weeing alot more so think its happening arggggh fingers crossed is over with by the 8th october ready for camp. Then she will be booked in after christmas then i can work on her feeling nervous around new dogs with out making the excuse about it being her hormones.

I am 100% now and ready. Thanks all that replyed.
