Behavioural training with Luka went really well....

I had so many questions but I had to bite my

tongue and wait for Emma's questions about Luka's health etc and filling in the forms.

So I asked her whether I'd done or not done anything that had contributed to Luka's behaviour, she told me that Luka is moderately anxious and easily stressed, fearful and that it's usually genetic, but we can also reinforce these types of behaviours, unwittingly. She asked me whether he'd been in a situation that frightened him when he was a puppy, ( he's only 16 months old now ) an off lead dog scared him when he was much younger so she said this could explain his aggression to other dogs, a fight or flight mode.

Emma feels that before we can tackle his behaviour towards other dogs we need to train Luka to relax himself, he was panting and whining and didn't stay still while we were there, and we need to do this when we're at home and separate from Cai, Emma feels he's dependent on Cai and he needs to develop more confidence on his own.So very small treats at the ready, the first exercise for relaxing himself, this needs to be done whilst I'm engaged in conversation and paying no attention to Luka, when Luka approaches for his treat, I'm to wait until he stops pushing his nose in my hand or whining and he sits down and waits patiently then I say Settle and give him his treat, I'm to do this if he's sitting or just relaxing so that he learns how to settle without anxiety.

Another tip for when we're on a walk and a dog approaches, we could either turn and walk the other way or I could scatter a few treats in the grass and Luka has to find them. Emma said that if I make Luka sit until the other dog walks by then all of Luka's focus is on the dog, and the back part of the brain is the aggressive part she said we want Luka to use the front part, the thinking part, so scattering the treats means he has to switch from aggression to thinking. I also have a lot of reading and training so all in all we achieved quite a lot, I'm looking forward to the next session.

I think that's GREAT & very beneficial for LUKA & you!! I think fear & anxiety will slowly go away with your help & with time. At the training center, do they do Agility Training?? I "think" that's to help with fear & anxiety and to build their confidence (I'm not totally sure)?? But it sounds like the training was so POSITIVE, and I'm so happy for you guys!![emoji171]🤗[emoji252]

That sounds great! I do the scatter thing with Amy as a distraction, it works really well esp if its a high value treat saved only for scattering!!

Thankyou everyone, I didn't realise how easy it is to reinforce this type of behaviour, she explained everything so easily and it makes sense to start training Luka to 'settle' first before we move on to behaviours on a walk with other dogs around.

They do agility training and obedience classes, Emma started studying and now has a degree because her chocolate lab had severe fear aggression, its amazing what she's achieved because of her Labrador. We're starting at the beginning, baby steps and building his confidence up.

Ok, so agility training must be really good for so many things. (I wonder if that would help my ALINAH. She's kind of fearful like we might hit her or something. Whoever had her & her red Husky brother may have abused them. Then they got lost & then we happened to adopt her thank God. Her brother was already adopted.)
But I'm really really happy about your training! Baby steps & paw paw steps![emoji171][emoji252]

I didn't want things to escalate with Luka, I've done lots of research but I felt he needed behavioural training from a specialist, I need training from her so I know I'll get the outcome I want for Luka, we are our dogs advocates so we need to get it right. Luka is a sweetheart, but his anxiety is bad for him.
Alinah is a very lucky husky, you clearly love them both a lot, maybe a behaviourist would work for Alinah, it's criminal how some people treat animals.

Aww glad things went well! Astro is the same he's a very nervous dog and most things stress him out - having his harness put on, being in the car etc so I think I need to get the behaviourist back in. Today a home boarding lady said she wouldn't be able to have him, he was so stressed from being in the car [emoji17] the behaviourist thinks its genetic with him too. The idea of scattering treats is good!

Thanks, I feel for you with Astro, Luka's the same, sometimes I feel I'm on full alert with him.
Another suggestion was to use a Baskerville ultra muzzle whilst on a walk until he can 'settle'. I'm not a fan of them but it makes sense for Luka. People always want to stroke both of them and Luka doesn't like it and this stresses him, off lead charging dogs is another trigger so wearing the muzzle will make people think twice about approaching him and hopefully other dog owners who just walk up to us and want their dog/dogs to say hello to mine. Emma said that his stress level will lessen if the triggers are reduced.

That's very true about reducing the triggers to help. I need to do more of that.
ALINAH is coming around. We've had her 2.5mths. She's now 10months & like a TomBoy (or has to be w/ARMANI. She's getting better being less shy/fearful around people/dogs but I keep working with her & reassuring her. I should probably take her to a behavioralist like you said.
I definitely think you found an awesome trainer (Emma) plus having her degree! It sounds like you learned a ton of info in just one session & so positive! Best of luck with more sessions.🤗[emoji120]

Lots of work with Luka this week and another session booked for sat.
I was at a standstill with my approach so I had to speak to a professional, maybe you could have a consultation to see if Alinah needs behaviourist help. It sounds as tho you're making lots of headway on your own, I hope it gets easier for you.
Emma is a godsend, so chilled and has a great work ethic, best thing I've done for Luka.

Had a lightbulb moment earlier today, I'm working on settle with Luka, but I was thinking he's not anxious in the house so why teach him to 'settle' in a relaxed environment and then it dawned on me it's the 'asking' of the word 'settle' and when he complies I will be able to ask this of him in all types of situations.

Love those light bulb moments!!!
I was told to always train new things in home 1st, then garden and move onto more distracting places when the command is working at least 8/10 times at home, makes sense really!
Sounds like youre doing great [emoji1319][emoji1319]

We were on our walk yesterday and a bloke was walking a shitzsu cross with a Yorkie and a 13 week old shitzsu, both off lead, he was on the bottom path and we were on the top path and the older dog came charging at us snarling, teeth showing, and Luka gave no reaction or Cai, I was saying 'settle to Luka and he was, I was very pleased with both of them, especially Luka.

CONGRATS with LUKA & CAI!!! YOU are the reason for them settling (esp with a dog off lead charging at you guys)!
With so many off lead dogs, I may start calling the dog catcher at the county. It's happened to us many times as well. Here on Husky Owners, we all abide by the rules/regulations of our states/countries. Then we have these nut heads & troublemakers that refuse to go by the laws, which causes conflicts from them to us & our babies. (That's just what I'm going to do in the future.)
But for you, I'm so happy training is going so well!!![emoji171][emoji252]
