Training to use a doorbell / Potty issues

Recommended Posts

Hey All!

Finn is doing quite well with potty training issues (FINALLY), but if I'm home and I forget to close the bedroom door she will pee in there totally unannounced. She just sneaks off and then comes back with no notice.

Even when I remember to close the door, she doesn't go to it and scratch any more. She doesn't give any warning.

I take her out every hour and she's fine, but at four months old I don't know that I should need to do this, and really, she only pees every few times that we go out, but not at any sort of regular interval relating to when she drinks or anything like that.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions? My pet store guru tried to tell me that a doorbell might be the answer because she won't whine to go out, or bark, or even come over and look at me and tell me that she needs to go, and sometimes I'm working so I lose track of time. I'm thinking about trying it but didn't know if anyone had any other thoughts or had done this with any success

Thanks much

Basically how it works is that you get a doorbell, or a bell like would be at a counter in a small shop, and put it on the floor or low enough on the wall. Then you make the dog touch it with it's paw every time it goes in and out for a few days and quite quickly it supposedly will start doing it of it's own volition when it wants to go out.

In theory anyhow...

That can be a useful tool if your dog in inclined to use it.

My boy taught himself to jangle the keys in the lock of the back door to tell us he needed out. No idea what made him think about doing it as we never showed him this trick and he couldn't have done it by accident as he had to jump up to reach at the time.

No he jangles the dratted keys no matter what he wants, just to tell you he wants your attention for something.

Shuras taught herself to sit bolt upright at the door when she wants to go out and at night whenever she wants somthing like a drink or wants to go out (which is rare she nornally holds it now till morning) she barks and howls till you take notice. maby she will think of a way to let you know in her own time. but the doorbell thing seems like a good idea. xx
