Jo
Just after some pointers please Amy has been with us for nearly 2 weeks now and settling in really well, shes 9months old and is a rescue Our main concern is her over excitement when out walking, as soon as she sees another dog or person she is so desperate to say hello, she bounds around in circles, and is hard to control, she has had some play dates with my friends beagle boy Blue and they get on great, hes staying with us for a few days and altho a little crazy at times they are generally fine, no jealousy over treats, toys or fuss. We are planning to get help training and socialising but as shes in season have been advised to wait til thats over, has anyone got any tips to try to settle/ distract her when shes out on walks? Emma
To be fair all of mine did that too and sometimes still do. They're five years old lol. You can try using small treats or clicker training to keep on going and praising/rewarding/clicking if you manage to successfully get past. Someone else might be able to advise you more specifically as I'm probably not the best person to give advise here, lol. petertmartin
I find you need to keep their attention especially when you can see other dogs coming. We're training Harlow to loose lead walk next to us so we use treats constantly and find that keeping her attention when people walk past or with other dogs she's purely focused on the food and she will walk perfectly next to us. It's exhausting and makes walks less fun for us but I know worth it once she's fully grown. Jo
Thank you, I need to find higher value treats I think, the need to meet people/ dogs seems to overide the treat! But I will persist, I know theres no quick fix but I'm in it for the long haul ( excuse the pun!!)[emoji23]Sent from my iPhone using Husky Owners mobile app

Sent from my iPhone using Husky Owners mobile app We found the same thing, we started her on shop bought puppy raw chicken meatballs but that soon became less interesting. I've since started oven baking chicken liver and hearts ($2 a pack from the supermarket) and this really has her at our attention. As John said it's really difficult sometimes that other dog or person walking past is way more interesting but I find if I can get her to sit or shake or lay on the spot it's easier than wrangling her away from someone or in a direction I need her to go and it helps keep her focus on us. if there is an object that's stationary and we need to pass it and I know she will want to pull towards it I will stop get her attention with food and slowly feed her as I walk so we can move past it. Jo
Thanks guys, I will try some 'real' meat and see how she goes, I did think about having a squeaky toy in my pocket to grab her attention then treat her!!!! petertmartin
You could use squeeker training as well I started that for a while and then stopped but could be used as a pre treat clicker. The smellier the food the better!!Sent from my SM-G900I using Husky Owners mobile app
Jo
So.... cooked some liver and made some sardine biscuits - she loves them!!! Shes coming into the 'standing' stage of season so a little more distracted than usual but came nearly every call for her new treats!!! Progress!! petertmartin
Well done you may need to change it up sometimes too because they can get bored of the same treat constantly. I mix sausages chicken liver and hearts all chopped up into treat bags and freeze them. That way the smells of everything are mixed together. But it's a great start glad she likes themSent from my SM-G900I using Husky Owners mobile app
Jo
Do you cook them? I dont fancy delving into a bag of raw offal!!! Our local butcher is going to source some chicken hearts for us so hoping she'll like those! I did a road walk today and we managed to do 'ignore' to every person we passed, we only saw one dog but I managed to hold her attention...... just!!! Thanks for the tips [emoji3] Sent from my iPhone using Husky Owners mobile app
