How will my dog interact with a smaller dog?

Hi guys!

Well right now I have a 3 1/2 month old Husky. We take her out alot to walk and play but most of the time in the house she has a closed off area for her when we aren't able to play with her. I can't let her run around the house most of the time because I have a 2 month old baby that she always wants to jump on, and a 3 year old that she makes into her chew toy. lol She is very hyper out of her closed area so I try not to let her around the kids yet until she gets behavior classes. But with her behavior and with this breed would it be a good idea to add a small dog to this family? Like a chihuahua? I'm not sure if she'd try to play with her too rough, or try to bite and chase it, or get jealous of her.

So would it be ok to get one or not a good idea? Does anyone have experience with a Siberian and a chihuahua?

I don't have any troubles with my husky and small dogs. A very good friend of mine have 9 Chihuahua's and my husky LOVES them.

She is not rough with them, but very protecting of them.. :)

I don't know your husky, i just know from my own that it's not a problem at all with smaller dogs..

You could try to let her meet a small dog somehow and see how she reacts :)

I know a few people who have success with it. If the dog is introduced to little dogs right from a puppy (like yours is) you have a better chance of her being able to understand and accept little dogs are not prey. I would be careful if you are thinking of getting a chihuahua puppy VS an adult though. Your sibe pup could easily injure a chi pup without meaning to just because of her size. If you get an adult chi though, they are better suited to handle a "beating" from your sibe pup and will be able to let her know when enough is enough.

Adult Sibes who haven't been thoroughly socialized with little dogs I wouldn't recommend bringing a little dog home. Ronan I can;t trust with very small dogs because he sees them as the same as rabbits. Anything smaller than a shih tzu is fair game to him.

I wouldn't recommend it without taking extreme precautions. Unless socialized at a very early age (still risky) a Husky will view anything smaller than himself as prey. I made the mistake of not socializing Aspen with smaller dogs and cats as a pup and it's coming back to bite me in the rear. In fact, he has shown signs of aggression towards smaller dogs as early as 8 months. This was the first time I ever saw him display aggressive behavior and it happened to be at the expense of my new neighbor's Bichon Frise. Not soon afterwards, he escaped from our backyard and came back with a neighborhood bunny rabbit. Not too long after that, he VERY nearly killed a stray Pekingnese that approached him on one of our walks. I'm not sure how many of you Husky owners have actually ever witnessed your dog attack another dog, but it is definitely not pretty. Trying to pry your Sibe's mouth from a smaller dog is not easy, in fact, it took me upwards of 5-10 minutes to do so. I'm not even sure to this day if that Pekingese made it, as he limped away yelping off into an alley. It was a pretty awakening moment for me and made me view Aspen in a little bit of a different light.

If you decide on attempting it, just be sure to have the right tools and methods. A muzzle will probably be a good idea.

I'm still slowly trying to introduce Aspen to both my cats and it does not look like it is going to go well. It's just going to be a very long and gradual process, but I'm sure it can be done.

Every Husky's temperament varies and some do better with other animals than others. Just be super careful and don't try and force it. Time is your best friend with socialization.

Thanks for the replies!

Yeah my main concern was that she might think that the chihuahua is a rabbit or smaller game that she could chase after, or worse. =/

We do want to get another dog I mainly wanted a chihuahua for a little bit more portable pet since we do go on road trips from Arkansas to Florida and was thinking with 2 kids and two huskies we might not have enough room in the house or the car. But I decided not to get one because it would just be more of a lap dog for me and not benefit Luna and probably won't interact with each other because of the size.

BUT, I was just browsing through the craigslist dogs adds for a chihuahua and I found a way better suited dog for us. A American Eskimo Spritz for adoption! They are a medium size breed and not too small and reminds me so much of a husky but half its size! Its big enough for Luna to play with and small enough to not take up alot of space. We think she's perfect we were up so late last night and all morning reading on the breed, and they seem like it would be a great match for us!

I can't wait for Luna to have a playmate, and actually interact with another dog which she really need. Thanks for the advice everyone!

And if you have any tips on introducing a new dog to her that would be great too. THanks again!

Oooh just looked them up on wiki and they look adorable! Just like a small Samoyed or a large Pommy! Deffinatly good to get another spitz breed to go with a Husky... I was actually going to suggest getting a Pom as I think theres a couple of other people on the Forum who have successfully mixed Huskies and Poms they are Spitz too and stand the best chance of behaving in a similar way so they understand each other... Its been said that huskies play differently to other dogs.

My girl has never had any problems with samller dogs usually the other way round actually so as has been said so long as you introduce them slowly and keep and eye on them I dont see a problem with it at all! biggrin.gif

I have a chihuhua cross who is only 5kg who lives happily with my Siberian who is around 30kg.

However they were raised together, we had the chi cross before Micha.

The best thing to do would be to socialise your Sibe with smaller dogs before adopting one, to see how she behaves around them.

I would also be inclined to fix her behaviourial problems before adding another pet to the family.

I have an 18month old male husky, a new 10wk old female husky puppy and a yr old maltese. My adult husky is great with my maltese and always has been. He's great w/ kids and any small dogs. The new husky puppy can get a little rough with the malt but nothing too serious. They are never left alone together and I'm hoping she'll be more gentle as she grows up. Right now she's a little taller than the malt but already much heavier. Good luck!

i'm one of the husky + pom people. my fiance's dog is a ~15 pound pom mix and they get along great. sky is a little rought with him (the pom, sam) but he takes it well. He's a little over 2 years old and Sky has been with Sam since the day she came home. I highly suggesting if you have a dog to get a second (same with cats). When I got my first cat I would come home after work and the cat (as much as I love her) would bug the crap out of me. It was only after I got her a playmate that she calmed down. Animals definitely work better when they have playmates.

A good friend of mine has an Alaskan Eskmio and they like it a lot. He's like a bigger white version of my little pom mix. Good luck!
