Digital Switchover in the U.K.

This is a question about signal strength really. I have sky downstairs so it's not a problem there but my bedroom tv has freeview built in. I tried using it about 2 years ago digitally but my plug in ariels (analogue and digital compatible) wasn't really working. the signal was constantly on/off/on/off the whole time and after trying several different ones I just gave up. Now I know that I could contact sky and get a new box at great exspense but as I will need 2 extra boxes I can't really afford the extra costs for the sky multi room package. So traditional plug in ariels are the only thing I can think of to try, short of climbing onto my roof and putting up a massive one that gets run throughout the house by cables (I don't fancy that option much!)

I was hoping that now that dtv is becoming compulsory is the signal going to be stronger? Are there any decent digital ariels around these days? Or is there another way that I haven't covered (that is simple for technophobes such as myself!)
