nate33
Hey, I'm new to the site and am trying to find some examples of what an ideal dog house for a husky should look like. I have a 1.5 year old daughter (husky) and am planning on building her a custom house. Please post pictures of your houses here or redirect me. (I tried using the search bar and didn't find anything).

sutsibe
A flat roof is almost a husky necessity (position the dog house where it won't make it an easy step over a fence or kennel panel, though!), as they love laying on top of their dog houses! They also often love to chew them, so while Richard's dog houses are gorgeous, his girls must be much better about not eating their homes than mine were/are! I currently have an indoor/outdoor run situation, but when I had dog houses, we'd make them from a single sheet of 4 x 8' plywood, with 1 x 1 framing inside (and on the inside/bottom side of the topper/lid, to keep it in place), and 2 x 4s forming a base on which the house stood. I loved having cedar chips inside for bedding, as the dogs always smelled so nice...
ocspirit
People say Siberians don't need insulated doghouses but all 4 of mine are. I find not only does it hold the heat great in the winter but in the summer they stay cooler inside too. You want the door to be higher than the floor of the doghouse to make a sort of "lip" to hold your bedding in. Escpecially in winter when you have deep bedding and the dog kick it about to make a "nest" to stay extra warm. In the winter I attach a rubber floor mat over the opening to act as a "door" as this blocks the wind and snow from getting in. In the summer that comes off for better air flow of course. Only one of my houses have a flat roof but they are attached from the outside of the kennel anyway so as not to take up floor space. Instead I have provided a wood structure for laying on. For bedding I use cedar shavings (it repels fleas and ticks) and straw. More straw than shavings in the winter. Blankets, dog beds and carpets are all a waste of time in doghouses. They do more harm than good.
