Socialising with Other Dogs

Hi Everyone,

So I'm after advice and tips from those with a little more experience than I.

When out and about on walks with our 3 year old male Husky Atlas, we often come across other walkers and their dogs. Atlas is never off his lead but on one or two occasions, other dogs have started barking and yapping at him and naturally he barks and has a go back when passing close by.  It always tends to be smaller breeds that kick off towards him. Having not personally owned dogs before I was hoping people could answer a few concerns/questions I have.

  1. How can you tell when it's just "dogs being dogs" and playing and when it's genuine aggression?
  2. Should I keep his lead tight when approaching other dogs or should I allow him some freedom to approach so that he know's it's ok?

I hope these questions make sense and I hope someone can offer some advice :)

aggression all shackles behind the neck all the way to the tail are up..ear in the back of the neck and all teeth showing...

as far as the lead.. sometimes it can actually add to the situation of some sort of aggression... I let mine be a bit free and a bit tight but then I know all the dogs around where I live and have an "ignore '' command and these little yappers can keep yapping and my pack walks on... Bindi really hates any dog barking at her..she is the queen of the village...except that the village does not know that yet  so there the ignore command comes in handy...

Don't tense up if a dog approaches - your dog will sense the change and he will be more likely to react. Just slide your spare hand down the lead to make the lead shorter and you have more control, but don't react any other way.

You can start off in somewhere like a park so there can be a good distance between your dog and others, if you have a friend with a dog that can go with you that's ideal! Make sure he keeps his attention on you, and reward with a treat if he does. Starting off by making him sit would be good, then try walking past the dog and decreasing the distance between the dogs, reward him for looking at you not the other dog.

Dont know where you live, bit I've just been recommended a local company called 'dog adventures', as well as providing training, boarding and dog walking services, they run bi weekly dog socialisation walks in a local nature reserve, you have to have a social assessment 1st but after that you are free to join the walks ( all on lead) and the trainer pairs you up with other suitable owner/ dog combos! And there are trainers on hand to advise/ help Amy having her ass wed then we will be good to go!
They work out of Lincoln and Yorkshire, maybe worth seeing if you have something near you?

So, Amy had her 1st 'play date' yesterday with my friends rescue beagle Blue, I was keen for them to meet as we are having him to stay while my friends go away next week!! we took them to my sister in laws horse paddocks ( 6ft fencing - no horses!) they had an amazing time, an hour spent frolicking, running and rolling in sheep poo[emoji15] both dogs were shattered but very happy, and calmly walked back to the car with tongues lolling!! Sadly these paddocks have new horse tenants moving in next week but there are some great 'freedom paddocks' available to rent - may be worth checking out?
I would post a video but cant work out how!!
