How often to bathe?

Recommended Posts

I was reading another thread about skin issues and I wondered something... How much should you bathe a puppy to get them accustomed to the tub and getting a bath? Right now I've been trying to get Pongo in at least once every couple of weeks so he's not so scared of being in the tub. His skin and coat seem great.

Let me know your opinions about how often to bathe:)

I think it really depends on the dog. Obviously, if your dog smells or is dirty, you need to wash it. My vet told me that he shouldn't be bathed with shampoo more often than every 3 months because his sking would dry.

I admit, I did wash him more often than that, but if my dog really stinks, he can't stay like that.

However, I usually rinse him with water if he is not that dirty or smelly, because water is harmless and simply washing him without shampoo won't make his skin dry.

Our last Husky, Elke, live to be almost 15. She had maybe five baths her entire life. She never had an odor problem, we kept her brushed, and we spot cleaned her. Aside from that, she absolutely hated water.

Zoya, our current Husky, is a little over a year old. She's had numerous times in the bath tub, just to clean her feet and legs. (She's a real digger and gets mud impacted in between her toes.) She's had two full baths so far. Once by the breeder the day we picked her up, and one a few months ago when she rolled in some poop.
