Have lived in Vermont since 1974.Worked as licensed electrician for 29 yrs at the University of Vermont.First woman to receive Journey License in Vermont.I am now retired.Have had dogs all my life.My Siberian Husky Skye was rescued off the streets of Burlington, Vermont. No collar or micro chip.I have had Skye for six yrs now.I knew that Skye was special from the start,I knew what my responsibility to meet her needs would be.When I was working I had a person who has an insured pet business. I Still have him come once a week or when needed. He is Skye's other family member. I also take Skye to a doggy daycare near me.She loves it and they lover her.It is a small operation so that their are only a small group of dogs.I also board her their.I don't have friends who have fenced yards or will just be able to keep her safe.Doors closed, always on leash.I have a yard that is 1/2 acre with six ft fence.A recreation path and park right across the road. She is a wonderful family member.Gets me out everyday.I do draw the line at -20F below.People except other Siberian dog owners can not understand these wonderful dogs.

  1. Skye has probably killed at least a dozen rabbits, 6 opossums, 1 squirrel, mice and moles, enough to make a coat out of.That's just in the fenced yard. She even got a full grown rabbit on a walk.Jumped in my neighbors bushes and seconds later dinner.High prey is her middle name. Sent from my iPad
  2. I also feed Skye raw.I buy it already prepackaged.A number of reasons. However that is probably for the raw food diet forum.Skye will only eat her food frozen.I do not buy anything from supermarket.I give her frozen chicken necks after our walk. They come from a local organic farm.the prepackaged is all chicken and no other additives.Only what is part of their formula.Do research on raw diets.find a vet that will work with you to make sure diet is balanced, and get wellness checkup.
  3. I wish your vet had given you more solid information.Just increasing food intact may not be the best answer. Some dogs will eat themselves sick and then some.Doesn't mean that they are not getting fed enough;Over eating is a real problem for dogs.Hard to get their weight down once they are overweight.I would seek better professional advice.
  4. What is his weight? What did the vet say what his weight should be?What did they suggest to do about it?What are you feeding now in terms of brand?
  5. Maybe you need to keep her out of the water for awhile and see if that helps.I wouldn't wipe or use any powder unless approved by your vet.It doesn't sound like she has had this smell all along? If she is constantly licking at it there is also a non-steroid shot that can work really well to help stop the itching. If the smell is that strong there is definitely also something else going on.I still might check for a yeast infection. This can cause a very strong odor.
  6. Taking antibiotics for many women can cause yeast infections. What you describe certainly sounds like it.Dogs can also get these for the same reason.
  7. Husky's will look thinner after they have been groomed.Have you talked to your vet when you go for check up what ideal weight should be for your dog? Also have you talked with your vet about his diet.Great that it has helped with not being able to tolerate kibble.
  8. Hi Mark, I am not sure why you would say a balanced diet is over rated when feeding raw.Every bag of hi end dog food will always says it is a balanced diet. Why would you change that just because you are feeding raw?I feed Skye raw but my goal every day is to feed her a balanced diet.Yes I do buy my raw food prepackaged. It is gluten free and off course grain free.I feed Vital Essentials chicken kibble.Skye eats it frozen. It is formulated to meet nutritional levels established by the AAFCO.A great website for dog food ratings including raw is on this following site.It is www.dogfoodadvisor.com.I am not a representative for for any dog food company.I do prefer to feed Skye a meat only diet no fruits, vegetables.Since Skye will only eat chicken, no other animal or fish the content of her food is all chicken, bone, heart, liver, with herring oil.It is labeled a complete diet.I do also give Skye chicken necks which she also eats frozen. They are organic from a local farm.Maybe I am missing something but to me I don't understand how you know your pups are getting everything thing they need? Please do not think that I am criticizing you personally I am really trying to understand this type of approach to feeding raw. Thanks
  9. Hi Zeke there was a rather long discussion on this, but I don't know how to find. What have you researched so far on feeding dogs raw.Have they been on kibble till now? What size is the chicken leg? is that all that you gave your pup?Who said your dog should eat 3 chicken legs.Raw needs to be a very balanced diet and introduced slowly to young dogs.If they have been on kibble it would be best to add slowly to that. Are you into making your own? What ingredients are you using?
  10. I think that was a very good article. It already made sense to me.Just remember you do not have to make your own raw. There are excellent raw already prepackaged at most pet stores.I have no idea about Petsmart or Petco.Do not shop at either.I believe in supporting independent pet stores. In my area there are also some groomers who sell excellent packaged raw.My pet store also carries a large variety of example, frozen chicken necks, turkey, duck, also many other parts, and bones.I only feed necks as treats, I don't feed Skye bones.Again just my personal preference. She already gets that in her food. When I first tried raw I did try making my own. When I did I again chose not to buy from large commercial grocery stores. So you can see that their are so many different options out there. The most important thing is no matter what you feed your dog a balanced diet is a must. Also see your vet for annual wellness check up.Great way to make sure your pup is not lacking anything in their diet.
  11. Hello welcome, I absolutely agree with Megan. As far as food goes there are some excellent websites which rate dog foods and explain why.Maybe someone out their has them handy.I just googled something like "consumer review on dog foods".Feeding raw and getting info is another whole story.I now feed Skye raw but it took me awhile to figure out what she would eat.I do not make my own.Not into it.I buy mine prepackaged at my wonderful local pet food store.I feed Skye her chicken kibble frozen. It contains no fruits or vegetables.I also give Skye frozen chicken necks after her daily walk.It is a very long story on how I figured out what and how she would eat raw. There are many, many, and I mean many different opinions and theories on how and what to feed your dog raw.The bottom line for me was this is what I felt is best for Skye.As far as dog parks go.I would not start bringing my dog initially for teaching social skills.Since Skye was a rescue and I didn't know how well she was socialized, I brought her to a wonderful, small, country doggie daycare. The reason I did this is we are a one dog home.I visited first by myself to check out the facility and talk to some of the staff.I wanted to know how they would evaluate her. They do not just take every dog. They worked one on one with Skye and a dog who was very mellow that they called an introduction dog.Non reactive to other dogs.Once she was thoroughly evaluated the she was introduced to a small group of dogs etc.I had her go everyday for a few weeks, even though it was relatively expensive, I did this for a full two weeks, then went to a couple times a week, and still do one day a week.Since I have to board her when I go away, she stays there. The boarding includes her being out all day with the gang. She is pretty relaxed about having to stay. For me I chose this method since I wanted to have Skye be safe and start out slowly.Dog parks can be a lot of fun, but they also have their drawbacks. As far as behavior.I would definitely encourage you to take a beginner dog training class with you.Well worth it for Skye and I.I was very lucky Skye as always been on the mellow side.No escape artist under normal everyday conditions.Of course, gate left open, is just too much for her.No matter how secure you think you have made your place.Something will happen and out they go. I would absolutely get your pup microchipped and a collar with a strong tag.No matter what you put on that tag, your phone number has to be current.I can not tell you how frustrating it is when you run across a loose dog who fortunately has a collar and has a tag with a phone number on it that is not current or the tag that is so chewed up you can't read the phone number. Again there has been a number of discussions about collar wear.I leave Skye's collar on 24hrs a day.Again for me I just don't want to take the chance should she get loose. Every Husky is so unique. But on this site everyone of us so appreciates and loves our Husky's.
  12. Hi, I would go with the rule of introducing raw slowly. Some raw and some kibble.I buy my raw prepackaged at my local pet store.I am very lucky since this is an independent store family owned and staff that knows about all foods they sell. They only sell higher end foods. This does make it a bit harder for some to buy. They have at least 5 standup freezers with all types of raw foods for cats and dogs, kittens and puppies. The raw is only from USA and Canada. I feed Skye Vital Essentials chicken kibble which is made in USA.It is packaged under continuous inspection of USA Dept. Agriculture. The ingredients have no fruits or vegetables.I am not or do I have anything to do personally with this brand.I also feed Skye frozen chicken necks that they sell.Comes from local organic farm. They have all sorts of beast, fish.Skye as said before will only eat frozen.I realize that there are so many different opinions, sites that are for raw feeding.I just feel that for me Skye will get a balanced diet.I will buy no meat from regular grocery store.Again just my opinion.Good luck.Bottom line I believe raw is best for all dogs and cats. However it must also be a balanced diet that keeps your pup healthy.
  13. One happy Skye.Just got done romping in the woods.Stop at brook to cool off. Then trying to find rabbits in the fields.Next digging in the mud.Just another day with mom.
  14. I am sorry that your pup is sick.I too agree that if there is any type of specialist in this area that is the way to go.I am lucky since there is a Vet service where a I live that is for emergency's and specialists who get referred by general vet practioners.I know it is expensive but many times it does become the only option; Is your pup a rescue? If so this may also be a behavior from something that occurred in the past. You may want to talk to a dog behaviorist. If not and you know where she came from you might want to find out how he/she was treated in the litter. When I got Skye who is a rescue I really needed to understand her behavior and work with her to make her feel safe.If I go behind her while she is eating she will run away from her food.I try not to do that but sometimes I just forget. She also will not eat or drink out of a metal bowl.If I am at the sink and I start washing the dishes and She is eating, the noise of the dishes will make her so nervous she will run into the next room.I don't do these things since I have learned that these things scare her and she will not eat. I do feed her raw but that also took me a while to figure out.I buy my raw food from my local pet store. When I first tried raw she wouldn't touch it.I spent more time bringing the remaining food back to the store.I kept trying, eventually I found that she will eat chicken kibble frozen.I feed her a brand that only is a formula containing meat.No veggies, fruit etc.she won't eat any other type of meat or fish.I also give her chicken necks when we get back from hiking every day. it has been a long haul but I love her and she is an absolute sweetheart.
