  1. As cheesy as this sounds- I happened to see an episode of Cesar 911, don't judge me, and a Doberman with Sep. Anxiety was taught to be calm by leaving him in a calm state. So making sure that when I leave Otto is calm and not wanting to play and even somewhat submissive. I'm going to try that several times over the weekend.
  2. Maybe I should run with him everyday. He is crated from 730-12 then again from 1230 until 3 or 4
  3. So I know I haven't posted in a while but...Otto has always had separation anxiety. He has never liked to be crated and always finds a way out. I have a black metal wire crate that eventually had to be zip tied shut to prevent his escape. Now I have a larger plastic enclosed one that he has chewed from the inside out and now the door doesn't stay locked. He applies pressure and it pops open. When he is out, 80% of the time he is fine. The other 20% he chews. Twice now it's been the carpet at the threshold of my bedroom door which was shut when I intentionally left him out. I need advice. Do I return to the wire crate and zip it shut and allow him to lie on the metal wires because he chews the plastic pan or do I let him roam the house and wait for him to chew the couch or can I train him? Or does he need a professional. I don't want to worry about my boy while I'm working M-F but I also don't want to keep repairing my house or spend a fortune on a trainer. Thanks in advance- Brett

    Shedding

I have been walking him to the trash can, saying no, and making him leave. I went out last night and left him out and he was fine. Maybe that will help. I think also with time he will learn the rules of the house like my girlfriends dogs have.
  5. Thank you guys for this! Sorry I have not been on in a while!!

    Shedding

I should probably take him to a groomer then, and get a better vacuum. Here's part two of our newfound problems: he's knocking over the trash can from time to time and getting everything out of it when we are both gone. He was crated at my house and he isn't anymore. He's been fine for the most part...do you think he just needs to be crated for his whole life or is his age combined with new freedom a bad phase, and if so how can I get it out of him

    Shedding

Ok so I won't be needing the explanation here necessarily, Otto is 1 1/2 so I'm well aware that they shed, and shed, and it never ends. I just moved in with my girlfriend and she's known Otto for a year now, but the hair is driving her nuts. She has two dogs, both hunting breeds with short coats. I'm wanting to know is it unhealthy or unsafe to brush our dogs daily? I know it seems as if the hair never stops coming off but Otto doesn't have a very thick coat as it is, and she is going nuts over brushing him daily. Any advice on this? I'm also welcome to advice on what you all do to keep the house clean other than sweep and destroy vacuums with husky hair:)
  8. Yea the poop is normal and I would lean towards a behavioral problem as well. I guess I will have to start training with him again daily on simple commands and new tricks to keep him in check
  9. So Otto keeps pooping inside my girlfriends house in the mornings if he isn't let out at 6AM, but then he will poop again in the yard when I let him and the other dogs out at 8. He is used to staying there and doesn't do it at my house, and his food hasn't changed with the exception of feeding him the other dogs food which is also grain free on occasion. The last time he had it was a week ago but he's done this 3 times in the last 2 weeks. I dont know what's going on with him.
  10. Thanks everyone. And yes he is huge. He's about 62 LBS now, and I'm hoping he doesn't put more on after his surgery. I cut his food back by about 20% to counter that so we will see how he takes it. But he's doing great and expecting some snow flurries next week to play in hahaha
  11. Hey guys I know my post have been few and far between but my last one addressed some aggression issues. Well he was neutered last Wednesday and has been fine. The day I picked him up he was tugging on his leash and ready to play. I took him back to the park yesterday and he was really good for the most part, certainly better than he had been since his attack and had a good time. He has been playing well and acting well. My girlfriend rented a camera to take pictures of our dogs the new days at the park and I wanted to share those also. Hope everyone has a great day!
  12. I'm not following the "alpha theory" too well. It looks like I've inadvertently been caught with my foot in my mouth. But Otto doesn't live with the foster, and I could see how the attack has somewhat traumatized him. He's always been what I will call "aggressively playful" because of how him and my old neighbors dog played. They were raised basically together as puppies seeing each other every day and wrestled when they played. That's how Otto has always wanted to play with other dogs, but had never been outright aggressive until he was attacked. Since the initial attacked he has been attacked 2 more times; once while drinking water and Jake the foster walked out of Ashley's bedroom, and once when I walked into her house and Jake greeted us at the door with a fight. Both instances were mishaps as we keep then completely separate as much as possible and each case was just misunderstanding of if jake was in her bedroom or not.
  13. her foster dog jake attacked him after I was getting on to him and yelling because he attempted to pee on the Christmas tree. He ran through us to attack otto. Until then they were 100% fine around each other and otto wasn't bad towards other dogs nearly as much
  14. Lately otto has shown a lot of aggression stemming from his role as the alpha dog. It started when my girlfriends foster dog, who is also very dominant, attacked him. Since then he has been in the alpha role and been very protective and aggressive towards other dogs. He is scheduled to be fixed on February 3. I know I am mainly responsible for it as I've waited until he was over a year to have this done, but I wanted some insight as to if it will help him with this.
  15. I know I live in a warm area, particularly this year where it's still in the 70's every other day or so even in December. Otto has still not gotten his winter coat in. He's showing signs of it coming in in certain areas and is shedding a little more than normal. Is it just slow because of the weather or is this a normal thing with what I'm presuming is a short coat or racing line husky? Any advice would help. As an aside, I hope everyone is doing well. It's been a while since I've been on here, school is rough and I'm graduating from the university of Alabama in a year and then I'll be off to law school for 3 more years so I've been incredibly busy and stressed out! Happy December too!
