Ice is diabetic

Hi all, it’s been a while since I was last here but thought I’d pop in and share this latest development.

about a month ago Ice had a bout of pancreatitis, he’s prone to this occasionally and is on a strict low fat/no table scraps diet but it does still seem to happen anyway.

he picked up quickly this time but something wasn’t quite right.  Nothing you could Physically see and if you didn’t know him well, you’d think he was completely normal...it was more like he’d lost a little bit of his usual sparkle. Sometimes I wasn’t sure even sure if I was imagining it or not.

At first we figured the pancreatitis had just taken a lot out of him and he’d need a few days to get his full zest for life back.  Being 9 years old this month, we figured it might take a little While longer than normal but I did a urine test at home on him anyway.   It showed up glucose in his wee.

so we booked him into the vets and they did a blood test and confirmed that he is indeed diabetic but that everything else is completely normal and we’d discovered it early on.  So now he’s on once daily insulin injections (20ml) and I’ve got some emergency honey stocked up Incase his blood sugar crashes.  (Vets advise).   The vet also said not to change his diet, just keep everything the same as normal and we’ll review his progress in two weeks time.

so that’s it for Ice.   Maybe this info will help others who think there’s something very slightly off about their dog but can’t put their finger on it.  If we’d left it and not trusted our gut instincts, then the prolonged high blood sugars could have done a lot of damage.

I’ll probably do another post soon as Bear’s also been to the vet.  Need to get an X-ray booked in if she doesn’t improve over the weekend, the dreaded words cruciate ligament were thrown out as possibility’s.

I swear we’re all falling apart in this house.  Certainly feels that way.  Lol
