4 Year old Advice,

Metta

Recommended Posts

We have re homed a 4 Year old Siberian Husky, shes settled right in so fast shes such a little character. Now my main concern is well more of advice is she wont eat the kibble she used to eat before we re homed her at all. Second day after we got her we got her to the vets for a full checkup and she got the all clear apart from weighing 19.3kg. Vet told us to get her to around 21kg mark?

I've tried her one a wet/dry mix using the same kibble still she goes mad for the wet and leaves the kibble. I have no problem feeding her raw but she isn't a working dog yet does get walked about 3-4 miles per day minimum also likes to jog with me when I go out jogging attached to the harness/belt.

I'm getting a Trial from Tails website to see how that works her stomach seems fine with eating anything so not too worried about mixing it up. So as much advice as possible to gain the weight she needs and what type of food.

If you are fine with feeding raw  - then change her over to it  -  my two are not working dogs but have been fed raw sine the day I got them  - one at 12 weeks and the other at 3.5 years old.   She is obviously not liking the kibble   (sensible dog)

I looked at Tails  - but they cannot cope with Marley's food allergies   - so afraid I cannot comment.      I usually feed from scratch (because of Marley's allergies) - but do use  Naturaw for a couple of items  -  If you check their website it goes into detail about their ethics and sustainability   - also their food is much cheaper than, say, Paleo Ridge   - another excellent food.     You do not say where you are from  -  but as you can get Tails I presume you are in the UK.

I would suggest finding a local raw food shop  -   I have an excellent one around 10 miles away from me  - who deliver if I cannot go and pick it up.

Again I have never used it because they did not answer my enquiry as regards what the animals they use have eaten in its lifetime   -   Marley's food allergies were so severe he went into anaphalctic shock because I unknowingly gave him some meat that had eaten soya & corn  -  I know that my supplier stocks it  - and she is very particular about the food she sells   i.e.  the salmon comes from Fleetwood Dock   (we are only 4 miles from it)  - and it has no skin or bones  -  it is human food they have not sold.

I understand well we’ve went for this photo below what do you think?

550grams per day to put 2kg on to her.
Would you mix with kibble or not?

Raw generally shouldn't be mixed with kibble , some dogs cant tolerate it as it digests at different rates

So will that raw diet in the photo provided above be enough for her day in day out or so I need to add anything else to her diet?

Don't mix them   -  just ditch the kibble

 Thanks for the help!

If you feed anything day in day out without changing it you will end up with deficiencies of some kind  - as with your own diet variety is the spice of life.   You also almost cut out your dog becoming oversensitive to a particular food.

My dogs have   grass fed lamb and beef  (because of Marley's allergies)  wild venison, wild rabbit, buffalo, herrings, sardines, salmon, kangaroo, egg, -  this forms the basis of their meals  (Marley cannot have any poultry of any kind nor pork)   then they get various veggies and fruit.

If you are totally new to feeding raw  I would start with completes  - different kinds of meat and fish.

Below is a list of articles on raw feeding you might find useful:-

I have included a couple of other web pages that I think you might like to keep.   I

The second one on the list I have included because there is a LOT of information on this site - its worth spending a few hours one day  to go through it   (that's not to say I agree with every bit of it)
