Storm : Honourary Husky

18 months ago we lost our Gobby girly Echo. She was a White german shepherd Dog. Recently we decided we wanted another shepherd. To give Darwin a companion and also to have a dog that can be trained to walk nicely and be let off lead with reliable recall. So we joined a Uk rescue, had a home check and started looking at possible adoptions. Then this interesting boy turned up.

Say hello to Storm. A 4 year old Dutch Shepherd mix. the brindle coat is not the mix, that's the normal dutch shepherd coat. He's certainly a unique looking dawg :)

Very few people will have heard of a Dutch shepherd, they were nearly wiped out during WWII, and most dutch shepherds end up with the Police or military as like Belgian Malinois they excel at that kind of work and so not many end up as pets.

He is a good natured dog, loves people. He's really bonded with my seven year old granddaughter Eden-Willow and seems to get on with most other dogs.

We've had him for a month, we've waited this long before announcing his arrival as sometimes a rescue may not work out for no fault of either the dog or the family, sometimes it's just not a good match.

However he is settling in, He and Darwin have had a couple of scraps both instigated by Darwin being overly protective of his people, but we were expecting this so it's all good. Darwin is adjusting to the new dog in the pack and the occasional snarling and grumbling gets less by the day.

He is a typical shepherd breed, always wanting to be by your side (even in the toilet !!!) always wanting a ball throw, and always happy to go for a walk.

However his original family did no training with him, not even Sit!!! so we have a blank canvas and he's doing well and is eager to learn.

You can all meet him at next years Husky Camp.

A really nice looking dog.   So happy it is working out for you all.    My new rescue  Mikey  is also settling in  (eventually)  its taken 7 weeks  -  he and Marley have been getting on really well since Marley has been poorly  -  Mikey has respected the fact that Marley does not want to play boistrously -  and this has been limited to them both laying on the floor together  - usually both on their backs and mouthing each other, gnawing on legs etc.   Mikey's possessiveness has gone down by around 80%   -  he is still head shy but this is improving   -  even let a stranger stroke his head  (on second time of asking)  -  he went up to the man himself the second time.    He is nowhere near as scared of me as he used to be, but still avoids female strangers.

He has settled in very well and we could not imagine life without him now,  .........  yes there are still things to be worked on, and he will forever, I believe, be looking for an opportunity to kill my cat,  but I knew the possibility of this before we took him on,  -  he is a husky after all.

Hoping Storm continues to settle in his new home and both dogs become firm friends.

Storm wants to be friends with Darwin, however Darwin is currently tolerating storm. They lie on the sofa together and on the floor and step over and around each other to go out to get water or go out to the garden, but they've never played, a bit of cautious sniffing is as social as they get at the moment. However on walks they are on the same walking belt and walk side by side with no problems. It's just Darwin being over protective of "his" people, but he's getting better.

So glad Mikey is getting better with new people. Someone put on facebook a few weeks ago a great way to help socialise dogs with other dogs and people is to go and sit in your local vets, the constant flow of people and animals is great for desensitising anxious dogs.

Welcome Strom.

I have “heard” of Dutch shepherds while doing a breed search. We were thinking of going the shepherd way before I feel in love with my two Huskies.

I don’t even think we have a breeder or if one would even be labeled correctly at a shelter here in the states.

They are very well known in the security and personal protection fields in the USA there are quite a few breeders overs there, but they are largely unknown to the general population, because they are largely used in the police / military and security and rarely get to be available as simple pets.  I've had Huskies and shepherds for 10 years, and as I'm heading fast for 60 as I get older I'd like a dog that i can guarantee I can control rather than one which will take me for a walk, also one that I don't have to chase for 5 miles if it gets off lead (getting too old for that sh*t) :P

Whipper snapper !   Next birthday I am 70  .......................  admit I struggle with two of them  - unless they are on long lines    -  hubby now resorting to taking them out separately  -  Marley is such an air-head on a short lead.

Wow ! Storm is very good looking indeed and has a big smile !

Actually I just learnt about this breed last night -I've been checking at websites of our local shelters to adopt a dog since I lost my big girl 17 months ago and last night a very handsome brindle dog with a face of German shepherd caught my eye !  Yes,  I thought he was a mix and no, it was a Dutch shepherd !  We have quite a few German shepherds and Malinois as well as Huskies here at local shelters but never seen Dutch shepherds before. This dog was less than 2 years old and I wonder how he ended up at the shelter.  And of course, I spent a couple of hours to know about this beautiful breed !

That's very amazing that Storm settles in very well and gets along well with Darwin in such a short time !

Welcome Storm -lucky boy !
