Potty training difficulties

Recommended Posts

Maya is 4 and she still isnt pottytrained. If i follow her downstairs in the morning she will go out and maybe go potty, but a lot of the time she cant be left alone for one minute. she will go out and go pee but she will come back in and poop. the door is always open so she can go out, but she will go potty in the house anyways. we have been trying to potty train her from day one but nothings working. the house always smells terrible and she wont stop.

You will need to start from scratch. And over a long weekend to concentrate in this but every day otherwise when at home. If necessary feed earlier so you do have time to do this if you're heading out to work A.M.

Keep back door shut.

Take her out on a lead within 15-20 mins post meal.

Walk her round the back until she goes.  (I use 'Be Quick/Be Clean, outside' for wee/poop.)

As soon as she does go, big praise/fuss and..reward.

Or, go out on a walk (with poop bags, & treats).

Same positive reward training . If/when she goes, praise using the right term & reward.

Keep the door shut until she has been.

If you catch her in the act of pooping indoors scare her off with a loud 'NO! BE CLEAN/BE QUICK OUTSIDE!'

(Use whichever term is appropriate to what she was doing .. And promptly take her outside . And shut the door.

I also use mind 'telepathy' if mine poop too near the house as I prefer mine to use one 'area' only .. I think & concentrate good thoughts during daily 'pickup' when they have pooped where I want them and as strong displeasure when they have pooped in an unfavourable place.

It seems to work 90% !

Diluting areas on the lawn with watering can where they pee also helps stop grass yellowing and Dog Rocks are very good too. Google for these.

Hope this helps.  Huskies really want to please you as do all canines.

Leaving the litter at 8/9 weeks does not give mum time to house train them in the litter pack, or teach them proper socialising - hence many issues with behaviour, dominance, lack of confidence -> defensive/aggressive reactive dogs.

When I first got Astro my boyfriend left the door open all the time for him and that probably made toilet training a lot harder than it should have done as he didn’t learn to tell us when he needed the toilet!
Lots of praise is needed when she does go outside, and if she does go inside the area needs to be cleaned with a certain chemical (can’t remember what it’s called sorry), if she can smell she’s been there before she will keep doing it
Has she got a routine of when she goes? Try and spot the times of day she’s doing it and let her out. Don’t leave the door open all the time, if you catch her doing it take her outside straight away (if she was a pup I would say carry her!)
How long have you had her for?
I’ve seen some people tie a bell on string to the back door handle so they can ring it to let you know they need to go outside, could be worth trying that

Good advice. In pup training I would pick up 'accident' poops and take outside to the specific area I wanted them to poop. Then pick up again shortly after. Positive reward enforcement too certainly helps - small treat within three seconds of every good deed. Ignore the bad, praise the good. [emoji847]

@MayaTheHusky ~ If MAYA goes potty in the house, please do not "scare" her as that only induces fear. (She could've been swatted in the past for going in the house, which may be why she is confused about where to potty. Never cause her any fear by scaring her and always stay "calm" with her.)
Just take her out every 30 minutes. When you get to the door to take her out to potty, just simply say, "C'mon, let's go potty." When outside, say "Go potty" here & there. When she does go potty say, "Yes, good potty MAYA, good girl," with excited praise.
Then be repetitive every 30 minutes. She will catch on hopefully in a few days.
Hope this helps!![emoji847][emoji191][emoji252][emoji267]
